Yeah, I do listen to independent music (Arkells, Modest Mouse, the Gaslight Anthem are a few examples), but I just don't understand how people can eat up garbage that keeps popping up like weeds only because it's what everyone else listens to
Modest mouse isn't indie anymore, they are signed on epic (aka sony), and their music has really gone downhill. Sellouts.

Besides, everybody knows that Ugly Casanova is where it's at.

Oh Modest Mouse is signed up now?? Thats a bummer. But I listened to 'Satellite Skin' by them and it was decent, nothing like 'Dashboard' or 'Missed the Boat'

Ugly Casanova? Never heard of them, I'll check them out sometime
And yeah Ive never heard of them either, though they sound awsome. I think we should turn this thread into the "list the best indie bands of today" thread, so that we can hear some GOOOD songs

You are either in serious denial because such an opinion made you cry or you can't read so you have to replace my opinion with your garbage.

My good sir, you need to get your head out of your ass. Either:

A) Stop being a slave to trends and try some "Underground" music, cause I gauruntee that mainstream will suck.

Or

B) Load your Ipod with oldies, put the head phones in, and stop trying to be "Kool" by hateing modern music.

Wow, those are some strong words there, but I don't think you understand where I'm coming from. I don't try to 'fit in' or be 'part of the scene' or any of that cliche bullsh*t you always hear now. I simply get frustrated by the facts that I can't turn the radio on and find any good music on it when I don't have my iPod handy and that when I try to talk music with my friends, who are sheep, its completely lost on them until I slap my headphones onto their deprived heads

Yes I editted my post a bit and it shows my full opion. Sorry about the strong words, you just hit a sensitve subject for me, being the only person I know(with the exception of my friends) that can form a coherent sentence, and then get called a nerd when my jokes are anything more than "Why did the chicken cross the road"

Because they like it? Everyone has different tastes, man. There's a reason it's "mainstream", because a lot of people enjoy it. Not everyone does it to follow a trend, and you shouldn't generalize as such.

My favorite bands are Primus, Electric Six and The Who. I also like Lady GaGa, Nickelback, and 3 Doors Down. Does that make me a worse person, or that the music is garbage, because it's popular?

Music is subjective. No matter how talentless it may be, and unpleasing it may sound, someone out there likes it. There just happen to be a lot of someones for mainstream music at the moment.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not good.

I gave up on mainstream music years ago (roughly when MTV went from music videos to Real World...and whatever else they show). Find the music you like, internet is there, music is somewhere waiting for you. Might just find "Beatles-esque" band to your liking.
Everclear kind of reminds me of the Beatles, and that is a HUGE compliment seeing as The Beatles are the best band ever if you ask me.

OT:I kind of agree, most popular music sucks ass, but there is still some good music.

If you want something Beatles-esque, listen to The Basics. It's rock with elements from 60s-70s music in as well. They're Australian as well!

Listen to some Opeth, they really are very unique and rock the facking house down when appropriate.

Progressive metal at its best!
Something a bit more mellow for the people with "sensitivities".

What the hell are you talking about? Have you never heard of independent music? Stop listening to the top 40 shit that the RIAA is cramming down your throat and discover the world of good music.
Yea, you seem not to like what the crowd does(welcome to the club) so stop looking at the charts. I did once and almost cringed. Plus, just wanna say, I really dislike the beatles.

Just depends on where you look. There will be some shining jewels in mainstream music, but there are different artists in the independent area.

Sad thing is, the next generation will probably be raving on and on about how awesome the Jonas Brothers were.

There's more music then whats on the radio. But unfortunately the world of music is dominated by pop and pop is dominated by 14 year old girls, who don't know what quality is so they buy anything.

Dude thats what people said in the 50's 60's 70's up to now. Each generation has new music which some people find better or worse. People burned Elvis records because they said it was sinful but it was just a reflection of the new societies value, as is today. Yes there is alot of shithouse music around today (see the entire pop genre) and metal isn't really a patch on the likes of metallica and sabbath anymore. But really there are still some fantastic bands out that will go down as Gen Y's rock legends. Just look at bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Rise Against, Atreyu from time to time, Jack Johnson, the Killers, Weezer and a plethora more that I can't name for fear of ranting (as if I haven't already done so).
Also look back on the 70's and 80's eras. While there was some FANTASTIC music then it too was buried neck deep in commercial pop shit. For example, Maddonna.

This guy said pretty much what I was going to say. The music that hangs out in the top 40 these days is there for a reason - because it's catchy and it's accessible. Telling someone that the music they like is trash won't change the fact that they enjoy it, and it won't stop them from listening to it.
