I'd blame this post on ignorance. There really are a ton of good bands making music out there. Also, if you don't like the music out there, try making some of your own. Learn an instrument, learn some theory, find some people to jam with, and play. That, or keep complaining about a non-issue. If you were to restructure the argument to say that there really isn't much good music on the radio, then you'd probably be right (or at least have a defensible argument). Unfortunately, to claim that there is no good music being created out there at all, evar, is simply narrow. Or, to use a quote, "Shallow and pedantic."

Death metal and Power metal are alive and well. In addition thrash is still floating about, as long as there is decent metal still being made it's fine with me. Don't me wrong though, the majority of music being released today is painfully terrible.
That's why metal is supposed to be listened too at full volume. It drowns out the bad.

Exactly.

Eh. Some of the older music fails. Like 'Revolutions Per Minute' by Rise Against. I love every other album but this one is just oddly shit. BUT Rap has progressively gotten worse. Early 90's Rap was occasionally kind of entertaining.

I do all those things. I have a Washburn guitar, am teaching myself theory, practice chords for hours on end, and occasionally play with some friends (except I'm still not a very great guitar player haha). I get frustrated because I just don't understand how the Top 40 is the Top 40 when there are much better artists out there! And yes, i do understand that this is my opinion, not the whole world's. I'm not an egotistical maniac, I'm just wondering if there are others who share my view. And as for the end part, I think you took my words a little out of context there

Okay, so let me start by saying that I find mainstream to be anything that I can find on my favorite radio station(regular radio) repeatedly. So here are some mainstream bands that I think are pretty okay if not great:

Daft Punk
Franz Ferdinand
Owl City
MGMT
Vampire Weekend
and many others

These bands may not be your taste, but I think they are all pretty good. You see what happened here? I like some mainstream bands because, shocker, they're good in my opinion. You see, there is only one thing in the music community that annoys me more than Kanye West, and that is people who believe that the mainstream should be damned simply because it is mainstream.

"Go Indie!"

"How 'bout go anything that I find good and if it happens to be indie, so be it?"

Mainstream music isn't shit, certain bands in the mainstream are shit.

Yeah you have a point there, but out of those bands you listed (which I agree are pretty good, especially Franz Ferdinand), how many other mainstream bands have you listened to?? It's like this guy said:

Throughout music history music has been made up of about 95% crap and 5% good stuff. That hasn't changed in the modern era it's just the the 95% is being pushed harder because it's profitable.
So while there are a few gems in the mud, mainstream, as a general term like it's commonly used, does mostly suck, in my opinion. i agree with you though that there are some good artists out there in the limelight

Common man, that is the basic rule of reality. 95% of everything is shit, and that includes underground/indie music. I would also argue that there were still a lot of shit bands being pushed in the past as well. You really can't help them pushing some shit bands when 95% is shit. it's just gonna happen. Just be happy that bands like Franz Ferdinand are getting pushed by Apple and even some television networks and getting it into the mainstream.

I also find one other thing interesting. For every one of us that says "such and such" band is shit, there will be one person saying they're great. For every one of us that says "Such and such" band are godly, there will be one person saying they're terrible. You know what's amazing about all of this. We are all correct.

One reason music was "better" back in the day is because only the good music lives on. For every zz top, the Beatles, and all other big names there was prolly 5 other shitty artist. Great music is still made, los lonely boys are amazing(yay plug), there is tons of great rock, even pop out there. 20 years from now people will say the exact same thing because only the good music from now will go one and people will forget one hit wonderboys from today.

Yeah, I have! I listen to it, but I guess where I'm really aiming this at is towards mainstream music
Then your argument's kind of null and void, sorry.
Avoid mainstream, simple as that.

Haha, you have an interesting way of thinking, and I can't deny that youre right or wrong cuz I agree with some parts and disagree with some other parts! But leave that lame 'common man' junk at the door, cuz you're already judging people simply based off an opinion they posted on one site out of millions on the internet, without ever meeting them face-to-face. No offence, it just irks me when people raise their ego to heights without any apparent reason

I definitely agree there is far too much shit music floating about these days. Most of it coming from the hip/hop, country and alternative rock folk out there.

I'll just stick with my limited group of progressive metal bands and some good classics like Pink Floyd, Doors, Led Zepp and Skynyrd.

Of course this is opinion but mine is the most important... to me!

People in general just need to stop worrying about what other people are listening to and just listen to what you like. There really is no point of discussion here except for bashing other peoples' tastes in music because it's different from yours, which really makes you just as blind as the people who never stray from the top 40.

No worries, I guess it does seem like I'm arguing though... But I'm just venting about something that frustrates me and wonder if people disagree with me all the way or if some people actually share my view, as one-sided and under-developed as it might be haha. But yeah, I didn't do a very good job of opening this thread up i guess

Wait...are you saying I was raising my ego with that post? I was just stating something I found to be true. Also, I never said you aren't allowed or shouldn't judge people or bands.

Edit: I realize the problem now, I wrote "Common man" instead of "Come on man," my bad.

I understand where you're coming from. Some people have already said that you just have to sift through the crap, but there's just so much of it! It's a miracle if you can manage to find anything good amidst all the bad! The good ones do exist though, might I recommend Dream Theatre?
