I have never been drunk in my life and, in truth, have never seen the attraction either. I can understand enjoying some malt liquor (whiskey and scotch, and I'm not talking about the cheap stuff, either), but mixed drinks are a horrifying rape of taste to me. I've enjoyed good rum and good wine (particularly rice wine), but I've never met a beer that justified the horribly inflated price.

And, F.Y.I., I had one shot of cheap whiskey about two weeks ago. That was some nasty shit and I will never try that kind of cop-out again. Damn near put me off drinking.

I never saw the point, I hate getting drunk. I've only been drunk twice and it really sucks, I wasted loads of money on drink and my hangovers last about a week (I dont know why, my dad has the same problem aswell).

I dont mind a nice cold glass of Whiskey, Scotch or Brandy after I have had a hard day but the exsessive drinking is what I dont get I have never had fun while being drunk I either get really sad and depressed or angry and irritable.

It pretty much becomes a chore and you feel like you have to get drunk because of the idiots putting pressure on you. I enjoy the area where you are fuzzy round the edges, so atleast I can control myself from getting into a fight and hurting myself.

Well, kids think it's the new cool thing because they've been disallowed it for the first 18 or 21 years of their life, then all a sudden they're allowed to drink it. The things we can't have are always more attractive.

The big deal is that the drinking age is 21 in the States, which means that once Americans hit that age they go off the deep end in wanton celebration of their freedom because they've had to anxiously wait so long for it.

I grew up in Germany, where the legal age is 16 (18 for hard liquor) and drinking alcohol is more of a community- or friendship-building concept than a "Oh hey let's get drunk" thing (that's not to say that people don't binge drink in Germany).

Personally, I enjoy the taste of decent beers and certain mixed drinks, so I drink because it tastes good to me and it's relaxing and can go very well with smoking a pipe.

And in jest, I would say that the beer you tried tasted horrible not because it was alcohol, but because it was Bud Light.

Well that's a little exaggerated. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of underage people or first drinkers who don't have a terrible, accident-ridden experience.

This however, is sound advice.
The younger the crowd your drinking with the higher the probability of ending up around a dumbass has been my experience. Don't take my word for it and there are exceptions to every rule. I'm just throwing that one out there. Its a good chance you wont even realize this until your older then you can look back, and then you will see it.

Could we not have the self-righteous nonsense, please? It's fine if you don't drink, but don't condemn others because they do. You sound like one of those 'abstinence is cool' kids. I was gonna say more, but sonickoala pretty much covered everything.

If, instead of one Bud Light with your uncle, you had a two-four of, say, Moosehead Lager with few of your buddies, then you'd understand. As for the taste... I think over time you begin to associate the cool bubbly hopps flavour with good times.

Also,... Drinking age of 21 is a bit ridiculous. That means you Yanks are in college for like, two years before you can DRINK. No wonder they all go to Mexico, which I'm sure is much safer.

I been drinking and smoking since 16 or so, but I learned my lessons back then about moderation.. But I wonder if a drinking age of 21 just makes people less responsible with alcohol later in life, since getting experience at a younger age is less acceptable.
the drinking age of 21 is purely for health reasons. a person's brain is not fully developed until their early to mid 20s, and alcohol interferes with the brain's development

You act as thou the drinking age really stops any college students from drinking in the first place. You'd be surprised with some of the money made from house parties around here because they can provide large amounts of beer to underage college freshman and sophomore students.

Either that or some people have fake ID's too.

Either way the 21 year old drinking age is a complete joke.

It's been a long time since I read such a low quality lie.

Sounds like you just hang out with idiots.
Don't take my word for it, you only learn from experience. It only takes one young virgin drinker to fuck up a party by doing something stupid.

If you don't know anyone like that, your that person.

because, like any drug, it offers you an escape from reality and some relaxation...
Also, it can improve the taste of some meals: amaretto in hot chocolate, rhum in fruit punch, red wine in a meat sauce, liquor in small chocolates with fruit in it, etc...

You can like alcohol for its taste, not just getting wasted (even though it's also a nice side effect at higher doses).

In my high school, every class was even visiting a local brewery with free gift samples to learn about flavors, a good way imho for kids to try while having responsible adults around instead of getting kids stealing booze from their parents, and a good activity for learning about a job that people seldom know about.
fair enough... you are right, i do cook quite a bit and i do use alcohol in it and sometimes it does add to the taste.... but this thread is talking about drinking specifically... and i dont really enjoy the taste of most alcohols while drinking them... my usual drink is usually vodka mixed with something else.... or scotch :p

When I turned 21 I didn't try to get smashed. I only did because I was taking some medication for my cold and when mixed with alcohol makes it a very potent mix.

I honestly don't care for alcohol. I looked down on the people in my high school who always raved about the parties I didn't go to and how they got so smashed. Yet come graduation, they were the ones not attending. LOL.
^ A bunch of kids in my high school decided to celebrate getting their drivers licenses by drinking and driving.

stupid kids + alcohol = bad fucking place to be

people who know their limits + alcohol = enjoyable time (for the most part)

I drink, but put strict limits on it. I don't let myself go over 2 drinks (maybe 3 beer, but definitely no more than 2 rum). My way of thinking is I wouldn't drink 8 bottles of water in a couple hours, so why do it with alcohol? I don't want to be drunk.
I buy expensive beer, but it tastes amazing (Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA: about 8 dollars for a 4 pack) and I can afford it because I don't drink that much. If I have to budget my beer, I have a problem.

And drinking alone is sad. Don't do it.

This question came from me talking to my friend about what he was going to do during Spring Break he replied "I'm going to throw a Spring Break party at my house with so much alcohol." And I asked "Do you really need alcohol to have fun at a party?" And he replied with a "Of course; you can't have a party without beer." (He's 21 so he can legally drink)

And it got me thinking what's with all the hype about alcohol? Granted I'm 18 and the only alcohol I've had was a Bud Light that an uncle gave me. But when I drank it, it tasted horrible and said "Why do people like this stuff?"

So the question is What's the deal with drinking? Why do people drink at all?
I do pity you. You live in a country where driving and guns are allowed from 16 years of age, but alcohol only from 21 years.

Here in Holland it's guns = illegal, driving = 18 yrs, and alcohol = 16 yrs. Let's just say that alcohol just lightens the mood. Drunk people have fun. (Most of the time. A friend of mine lost his sister in a car crash and everytime he gets drunk he doesn't only get REALLY drunk, but also really depressed.)

Besides, experiencing the decay of human society first-hand is fun!
Um actually here in America you can own a gun at 18 not 16.
It's possible that I got some bad information. Anyway, I think that's still about infinity years to early.

I have no problem with drinking, I just don't enjoy the day after... in the end, you lose 1 day for 1 night of something you probably won't remember...
I'll stick to the occasional drink thanks rather then getting completely smashed.

For the record if your going to drink don't be an idiot and don't do it with an idiot.

If you know your limits by pacing yourself, your probably going to be just fine. If your an idiot and you slam drinks down until your pickled, and your not thinking straight, then your in a world of shit.

I'm not trying to be preachy I'm trying to warn others about fuckups I saw and witnessed. You don't need to follow my advice, you don't need to do use some common sense but the further you go the higher the probability of you getting hurt goes.

What?

That makes no sense to me. Being drunk is a once off thing you can do to see if you like it, much the same way you could watch Anime once, run a marathon once, or go to a club once. Being drunk, not wasted, but drunk, isn't going to do anything bad to you at all, and is to see how you feel about the whole thing.

Suicide is something you do to end your life, and cannot be compared at all. You're comparing getting drunk once to committing suicide? That's...insane.
Irrelevant.

Your point is that we can't talk about something without experiencing it, my point is, your point doesn't make sense. Point stands. I don't need to put my genitals through a meat grinder to tell you it's stupid.

I think it tastes like crap too, but i force some down during parties xD
Every time i take a sip i'm rolling on the floor cringing while everyone else is having partytime, so i never manage too much.

I'm guessing it just makes people more sociable though. I'm shy as hell usually but when i'm drunk, as well as gaining the ability to talk more about random crap i also gain the ability to dance like crazy until i pass out :D Good times.

1. Sure, there have been instances where we've had to call an ambulance cause some idiot got paraletic, but normally when we invite noobs, we keep an eye on them. It's called being responsible.

2. We try not to invite fuckers. 1 occurred due to someone mentioning the party to an idiot ned who downed 250ml of vodka or something crazy.

3. I quote only the points I address. Makes things more concise for others.
1. Read my post. I was talking about being responsible, and the younger a person is, and if they lack experience with something the chances of something bad happening increases. especially if the people around that person are just about as inexperienced.

2. fuckers will show up, its a matter of time, weather you invite them or not.

3. You aren't comprehending my post. The whole thing is a single piece of information that was only made to help people not fuck up their first time drinking by not using common sense or partying around equally retarded people.

4. You didn't address anything, you just called it a lie. Next time you try to address something explain why you think that way. If you don't, that's trolling territory and also why your suspended right now.

I'm just trying to help people out. They don't want to listen to a guidance counselor or their parents maybe they can just listen to me telling them to use common sense so they don't end up dead.
