This question came from me talking to my friend about what he was going to do during Spring Break he replied "I'm going to throw a Spring Break party at my house with so much alcohol." And I asked "Do you really need alcohol to have fun at a party?" And he replied with a "Of course; you can't have a party without beer." (He's 21 so he can legally drink)

And it got me thinking what's with all the hype about alcohol? Granted I'm 18 and the only alcohol I've had was a Bud Light that an uncle gave me. But when I drank it, it tasted horrible and said "Why do people like this stuff?"

So the question is What's the deal with drinking? Why do people drink at all?
I do pity you. You live in a country where driving and guns are allowed from 16 years of age, but alcohol only from 21 years.

Here in Holland it's guns = illegal, driving = 18 yrs, and alcohol = 16 yrs. Let's just say that alcohol just lightens the mood. Drunk people have fun. (Most of the time. A friend of mine lost his sister in a car crash and everytime he gets drunk he doesn't only get REALLY drunk, but also really depressed.)

Besides, experiencing the decay of human society first-hand is fun!
Hahah I hate the sober douchebags that make fun of us >.<. But yeah drinking is so much fun if done correctly and noone gets hurt.

Um actually here in America you can own a gun at 18 not 16.

Drinking makes you more confident, more easily amused and less inhibited. This naturally leads to generally fun times when a group of friends are drinking.

Of course there are many massive downsides too, and I don't just mean hangovers!

I'm 19 and can legally drink (Ireland) and I only do it for a purely social aspect. I'm not very social, so if I go out i need to have a few for confidence and to put up with the drunk people. I also found if one person in a group is stone cold sober (I didn't drink till nearly 19), it unnerves the rest really and they feel you are no fun. I pretty much give in to peer pressure by drinking.( as a side note, I've never been extremely drunk or even past tipsy, so I have had no very bad experiences with drink so far)

I drink on some occasions because I like the taste of most drinks, but also because it generates a good atmosphere on nights out and eases social interaction with strangers. 'Tis fun.

Beer just wins, alcohol in excess i'll agree is stupid but is occasionally unavoidable on a night out. If alcohol is taken in the right amount however, it doesnt cause any damage, makes you more at ease and generally friendlier,

Cos being drunk alters your personality, that's the whole idea, having your enlightened bubbly happy personality and being around others who are the same. You do things you normally wouldn't, have a laugh, take loads of photos, and have fun regaining your memories over the next few days.

First got drunk at 15, loved it, loving it ever since.
That being said, some people become an awful person when they've been drinking...

Ok first off let me just say im Scottish and I litteraly grew up in a pub. My dad was the landlord and the only way into/out of the house was through the bar. As a result ive been drinking for a good part of my life already and don't see it stoping any time soon. (started with my dad giving me the occasional pint of cider at 14ish, seems crazy now)

Ive talked with several people about "alcohol not tasting nice" and know that the following is true.

1: There is almost always some kind of alcohol you might enjoy.

2: Stuff you dont like at first can grow on you if you give it time and drink it in the right setting. (This is especially true of beer/wine, hated the stuff at first and now im a real ale nut)

People get drunk for a lot of reasons.

When it comes to the enjoument of alcohol in general it's an "aquired taste". Meaning that if you drink enough it actually begins to taste better to be entirely honest.

Also it should be noted that like spicy food, some people enjoy the right kind of "bitter" when it you get down to it, and a lot of those people are the same people who get really into beers and such.

I'm not really into drinking, but truthfully it's something you need to do to "get". Even the social aspects when you get a lot of uninhibited people together are something you need to do, in order to really understand.

That said I generally do not drink, have no desire to get drunk for reasons I won't get into, and think that objectively it causes more harm than good. I wouldn't oppose a second attempt at a probition, even if I do not specifically support such a thing.

I drink because I enjoy it. Also I don't go mad with drink and I know my limits because I was raised to know these things, the first real drink I ever had was when I was 14, in the house, with my family making sure I was okay.

I'm a social drinker, meaning I don't really DRINK, unless it's like a party, or I'm out with my mates or it's a special family occasion. So I can understand the whole 'there's gonna be so much beer' view that your mate has. But you don't need alcohol to have a good time.

Anytime I go to a gig I always rate how good a night it was by how sober I am. If I don't have enough time to drink, cause I'm too busy dancing or headbanging or arsing about then it's a good night.

because, like any drug, it offers you an escape from reality and some relaxation...
Also, it can improve the taste of some meals: amaretto in hot chocolate, rhum in fruit punch, red wine in a meat sauce, liquor in small chocolates with fruit in it, etc...

You can like alcohol for its taste, not just getting wasted (even though it's also a nice side effect at higher doses).

In my high school, every class was even visiting a local brewery with free gift samples to learn about flavors, a good way imho for kids to try while having responsible adults around instead of getting kids stealing booze from their parents, and a good activity for learning about a job that people seldom know about.

...I'm not a happy person. I'd say I have massive anger issues. However, I keep them bottled up and so it's no problem. Thankfully.

I don't drink 'cuz I'm pretty sure if the top was loosened on that bottle, I'd probably end up stabbing/killing someone over something pathetic rather than fume over it. And guess what? I don't want a felony on record or go to prison/jail. That would suck. I doubt I'd do well there.

Now I know that I shouldn't really have an opinion on this considering I'm pretty young however I've been getting drunk for a few years now (not black-out drunk more tipsy drunk). So I think I can say why I think its good, for me anyway. Firstly, I really like the taste of what I drink, that is to say Guinness and a good Whiskey. While I'm fine with other alcohols (except Rum...dear god what a taste made me sick just from the taste) Guinness and Whiskey I find taste real good. Secondly, I tend to be more sociable after one beer merely because I feel that it allows me to break the ice (and have a drink when I have nothing to say). Also I'm kinda shy around new people so having a drink or two allows me to expand my horizons.

Get a little bit drunk before you deem it a bad thing. I have no problem with it and sometimes enjoy a little bit of Vodka or even fine Wine, but I don't drink much. Most people do it because they want to fit in, the majority of folks between 12-25-ish drink only because it's the one thing that gets them noticed by people etc. etc.

Some people think they need to have alcohol in order to have a good time. I don't get it either, in my old school kids would constantly brag about how drunk they became on the weekends. It struck me as insanely stupid rather than anything worth bragging about.

I don't drink often and even then, I've never had enough alcohol to become intoxicated.

Because, we need to be hydrated some wa- oh, alcohol...
Me, I drink what I feel like, when I feel like it (unless I'll make a lot of shit for myself by doing so), and I generally drink to just kinda relax/have fun. Not saying you can't have fun without it, You just stop your impulse control a bit..also, more things are awesomly giggle-worthy when you're drunk...or at least that's it for me >_>. Still, I drink seldomly...

I don't get why people drink.

It makes you act like a dumbass, you smell terrible, it tastes like a mix of vinegar and piss, and it causes you to make terrible decisions.

I don't drink atm. And I don't berate others for drinking. There's nothing wrong with alcohol consumption when it's done in moderation. As for getting drunk, I'm not sure why there's so much hype surrounding that. I've been drunk once and it's silly. Sure, your inhibitions are gone but at what cost? I spent half my weekend lying in bed and throwing up more than just vomit.

I see alcohol in a weird way: I look at a glass/bottle of vodka and think of it as I would any non-alcoholic drink. I'll go to a bar to watch a live band and I'll happily drink bottles of Smirnoff Ice with my mates. The fact that there's alcohol in it just doesn't matter to me. I just make a mental note not to drink more than a handful of bottles of it, depending on how much the drink has.

And yet I see people forever making a big deal out of the fact that this drink and this drink and this drink each have alcohol in them and that you simply must have alcohol or you are officially a party ruiner. Or something.

It's pathetic.

And if you seriously need alcohol to become socially adequate/confident, then something is wrong.
