It's fun to drink. Sometimes a bit, sometimes a lot, sometimes until you forget how to consume liquids.
Luckily, you tend to build up a tolerance to the horrible taste of most alcoholic drinks. Or, of course, you can buy some of those that taste good, that'll cost ya your firstborn, though.
Beer is probably the archetype of the "acquired taste" family of alcohol; it certainly gets better after a while. Hell, I've even enjoyed the occasional beer outside of a social context.
Of course, that might just be increasing alcoholism.

*condescending message warning

drinking is good to increase your confidence and be more social but people emphasize is as a way bigger part of life than it actually is. There are so many other things to do in life not involving drinking. If you have good friends, there is no reason to try feign confidence around them and it's not a good idea to be in bad state of judgment around complete strangers.
in any case, just talking about it cannot describe what being drunk is like, so to really get an idea of what drinking is all about you have to try it. I would suggest you try this around friends you trust, rather than at some random party (it's kinda dangerous).
the point I'm trying to make is, you should never think you have to go drinking to enjoy yourself just because other people say so, Do what YOU love, you don't have to excuse yourself for that, ever. If you like playing videogames with your friends, play videogames with your freinds, if you like reading, read. If you like building replica's of famous builgings with matchsticks, JUST FUCKING DO IT!! anyone who criticizes you for this, it not worth your time.
That's the most important message in life, do what you love, and if you don't wanna drink, that is completely fine, seriously.

I can give many reasons to drink -
1. social acceptance, certainly as a student, I have friends who dont drink but they are constantly pestered over their decision, and being pushed to try and change their view.
2. You get a huge social boost confidence wise - you feel able to engage with strangers much easier
3. Being drunk is fun, at least for me, I laugh more, I'm funnier(I think) and I tend to have awesomely fun things happen that wouldn't happenf I was sober.

There's others, but those are the biggies, it does help me that I do like beer as well :)

Ah, I wish I could have found an English version of this one [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfUDgDap5aI&NR=1] instead.

Anywho, drinking - I'm 33 and I've never taken more than a few sips. I've a philosophy that I prefer to keep my wits about me at all times.

Me, I'm a social drinker. I enjoy the occasional drink whilst hanging out with my mates. But I don't drink "to get drunk" like a lot of idiots do. So there is no big deal about drinking, just people who don't know what they are doing.

Granted I'm 18 and the only alcohol I've had was a Bud Light that an uncle gave me. But when I drank it, it tasted horrible and said "Why do people like this stuff?"

So the question is What's the deal with drinking? Why do people drink at all?
Get some vodka or UV or something, mixe it with some Hawaiin punch or cocacola, get drunk with some friends, watch a funny movie or play some video games, and report back to me.

Odds are, if you don't over do it, you might have a great time, and discover what "the deal is with drinking."

If you're drinking to "party" you don't typically drink because it tastes good, or because drinking in itself is fun. You drink for the intoxicating and liberating effects of Alcohol.

Drunkenness destroys feelings of inhibition---hence its use as a "social lubricant." Those parties where people stand around awkwardly not talking to each other? Not as big a deal when everyone is getting saucy.

Now, not everyone drinks to "party." I enjoy that sort of partying from time to time, but I also am starting to feel the effects of it on my waistline and my wallet... and I feel like I'm outgrowing it a bit----drinking with friends at parties and bars no longer constitutes the largest portion of my social life.

On the other hand, many people drink to achieve a slight buzz, and because they've acquired a taste for good beer or wine. You mention you had a sip of Bud Light and it was terrible. That's because it *was* terrible.

Bud light is one of a variety of piss-water light beers that are easy on your wallet because they're cheap and easier on your beer gut because they're lower in calories. But what you save in money and calories you lose in taste. There are much tastier beer offerings available at higher prices, and preferably locally brewed.

But all beers are universally bitter. Many beers are advertised as "Refreshing," but all that means is, "Much more watery, but still bitter tasting like every other beer."

Does beer taste bad?
Beer is an acquired taste. Like Mushrooms, or spinach. I hated beer until I was like 20, if I was getting drunk before then it was off of liqueur mixed with something to mask the taste.

Should you feel pressured into drinking?
No. Not really, feel free to stay sober. Many times I only drink a little or not at all, but I still enjoy hanging out with my friends who many be drinking. Many people abstain entirely from alcohol and still have a great time at parties.

Is drinking bad?
Only if you're the member of some puritanical religion who values that sort of arbitrary morality. Drinking till you puke is bad. Getting drunk every day of the week, or at the expense of necessary chores/activities is bad. Drinking by yourself and avoiding friends to drink is bad. Drinking in general is not bad, however. Stay clear of problem drinking, and you'll be fine.

A lot of people are wary of drinking because you do lose your inhibition. You don't lose control totally, but you definitely lose some control. The more you drink, the less control you'll have. And it will also impact your judgment. These two factors are what scare people who want to abstain from alcohol: that they'll be much more likely to behave in a way that is not carefully controlled, I think, is why they don't do it at all.

Case in point:

If you don't want to lose your inhibitions, then abstain.

Oh, and if you do decide to drink under-aged, be mindful of the fact that it is against the law and there are consequences.

So they like you because you weren't yourself. Great friends those, not liking you for how you really are until you lower yourself...

I'd prefer to stay with the "geeks" than hang out with the "popular people", who in my experience are the most brain-dead people of all. It seems that nowadays popularity is proportional to idiocy.

The taste of some alcohol is really good but most of it is just piss in a bottle. However, since I'm too cheap to go out and buy the good alcohol that I like the taste of, I rarely drink. When I do drink its probably an occasion where it might be kinda fun to be buzzed. If I am not wanting to be buzzed, I see no reason to drink. I can't imagine a life where you are sober all week and then drunk from sundown on Friday until Monday morning.

I'm 21 and don't drink, partly because of the taste, but mostly because I've seen how much it changes people's personalities, and also how addicting it can become. I've never seen the big deal though. "Hey, let's drink something that'll make us act like idiots and wipe the memory of said idiocy from our minds!" No thank you, sir. Also, if you have to have alcohol at a party to have a good time, you need to rethink your social circle.

EDIT: Not that I'm trying to sound all self-righteous or thinking I'm holier than thou just because I don't drink. Do what you gotta do, but don't drag me into it.

Teenagers get a thrill out of drinking because they aren't "supposed" to. It's not a huge deal at all in countries where there isn't this idea of a "legal age". I mean, when you have responsible parents who, say, let you have wine at dinner--drinking alcohol is no big deal.

But drinking is also a cultural thing. Germans and the Irish--they got bad stereotypes for it but going out and having a drink with friends has been a part of their cultures since the first human brewed his/her first vat of beer.

You can't talk about good beer without talking about the Germans and you can't talk about good whiskey without talking about the Irish and the Scottish.

Although despite this you cannot drink for 3 more years. The age limit is what causes the phenomenon of binge drinking which is unique to the united states. If you've always been brought up in life that *meh* alcohol is a drink like any other and as a kid you are allowed a glass of wine on occasion with your speghetti, there is no rush to finally become 21 and drink your face off.
Haha, binge drinking is definitely not unique to the United States.
