We kind of game GB the stamp (Roland Hill, inventor of the Penny Black, was born here).

Failing that, we try and cram as many chavs in this town as possible. We're just shouldering the burden people! :p

Princes Street is open again? So you've got your great tram nobody really wanted (that's what I was told)? Congrats!

As for me, my hometown (Vienna) had been home to a bunch of really badass and famous people as well as it is host for some rather big events.

The steam engine was first used in America in my town.

As well as the first testing of a modern submarine, I believe.

For me, a Belfast resident, it has to be building the Titanic. Ok it was a complete failure, but it was the goddam Titanic, it will go down (no pun intended) as the most famous ship ever built.

I have a few others but I'd like to hear yours first.
New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Moby Dick is pretty much about us, and everything in that book occurs NOT in the ocean occurs here.

Plus we had some dude invent the harpoon everyone used. And we have all sorts of awesome statues which commemorate when we were the premier whaling port in the world

(THIS THING IS BADASS.)

The biggest thing is probably being a main host for the Tall Ship's Races in 2008, which is not bad for a city (Yes, we've got a city-status) with 5,000 inhabitants.
During the TCR we also had Status Quo here, yay.

And during something called 'Måløydagane', we had Alexander Rybak here, but he's a luzl anyway..

EDIT: Oh, oh, Måløy as this town is called was also a really important place in Norway for the Nazi's during the WW2, there's more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Archery .

Also, we've got this, which is macho:
[SUB]It's about 3ft tall[/SUB]

The town I live next to (Leatherhead) was one of the places heavily mentioned in the book "War of the worlds" by H.G Wells.

During the French Invasions (I think), our citizens gave away their meat to the soldiers holding the city and ate the tripe.

Which resulted in the creation of our traditional dish.

It was also where the liberal revolution started, and the place of one of the first coups to overthrow the monarchy and establish a republic.

In Hastings we had a war with the French in 1066. Not sure how internationally well-known that is.

A short while later a man that lived here invented the television, so yeah, that's pretty good. He was Scottish, but I'm pretty much Scottish (2 Scottish parents) so I can take false credit either way.

Nothing. Seriously, nothing whatsoever.

Even the 'castle' we have is an absolute joke, just a big house with a moat. It's a friggin' office building nowadays, go figure. But what else do you expect from a village with around 2500 inhabitants in the middle of no-where.
