Definitely Children of Men. The movie gives just enough character definition to someone before they get killed off or disappear into a mass of police in a riot. Despite all the messages of "no hope" and depressed atmosphere, the whole thing manages to end on one really refined, strong, uplifting moment. It also manages to capture the fear of war pretty well by ensuring the main character never even gets the chance to hold a gun, despite being shot at numerous times.
TV: I'd have to agree with Scrubs can be pretty depressing sometimes.. The Ben's Funeral episode killed watching Scrubs for me.
Movie: What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr.. Donnie Darko was a bit depressing too, but not as much as that movie.
Right at the very beginning of the movie, Robin Williams has 2 kids that are killed in a car accident. He and his wife start falling apart as does their marriage, whereupon 4 months later Robin Williams dies. His wife goes crazy and commits suicide. AND THIS IS LIKE THE FIRST 30 MINUTES! He then finds himself in heaven, but learns his wife went to hell, and spends most of the rest of the movie in a LSD inspired depiction of a journey to hell to bring his wife back.
Book: Dune. Because I'm struggling 100 pages into it to become interested.
Anime (and also hands down most depressing thing of ALL TIME): Gurren Lagann. This is seriously the MOST depressing thing I have EVER seen. The first 7 episodes are fantastic and hilarious, and the rest of the series after that is arguably awesome as well, but after episode 7...
The main character of the series is a boy named Simon, who digs tunnels in a world where the entire human population is forced to live underground, as the surface world is controlled by beastmen with giant robots that kill all humans who come out from underground. He has an older brother figure Kamina, who is a generally kick-ass all around amazing kind of guy, who dreams of going to the surface, defeats a giant robot invading their home with a katana with the help of a bathing suit wearing big-boobed girl with a huge gun (Yoko) and a midget head robot Simon dug up, leads them to the surface, they get more robots, yada yada yada.
The series is an overall happy series, but is downright terrible for the main characters, here's why:
Humanity, led by Kamina, starts to make headway against the beastmen, so the beastmen send the big guns. Simon starts to gain confidence in himself and Yoko falls in love with Kamina. Kamina then DIES saving everyone (in the most badass way I may add) IMMEDIATELY after everything starts looking up for the humans. Simon is now forced to command the forces of humanity at like, 13 years old, has just lost his best friend and older brother and falls apart. Oh, and he was in love with Yoko and finds out about her and Kamina at the same time this all happens. The people lose confidence in him, abandon him, and his robot stops working for him.
At this point he discovers a locker in a junkyard, with a girl inside. The girl (Nia) restores his confidence in himself, his robot starts working again,, the people believe again, and he falls in love with her. Then it turns out she's the daughter of the beastmen king. They kill the beastmen king and flash forward like 10 years into the future. A race of alien beings in control of the entire cosmos see humans as a threat and a population activated destruction device in the moon comes to life to wipe out all of humanity because they have become too numerous. The beastmen king was trying to stop this, and now he's dead. Simon is set to marry Nia, when she activates as a messenger weapon for the alien race, heralding the oncoming destruction. Simon is blamed by the people for the current mess, betrayed by his friends and scheduled to be executed, then sacrifices all to fight the big new baddies.
Long story short, Yoko falls in love again, that guy dies. Simon saves the universe, and in doing so his fiance ceases to exist. Then Simon wanders the Earth for the next 30 years only to be forgotten by everyone after saving the entire friggin universe. It's much more complicated, but if I didn't stop I'd be writing a whole synopsis lol.
Up had me crying like a baby, as did Black Hawk Down. I didn't cry when I watched The Hurt Locker which was apparently surprising. And of coarse, The Shawshank Redemption. Cried so much the guy I was with is now my boyfriend. :] Turns out it was all an elaborate plan. Oh yeah, and Big Fish.
Come on guys, MARIA! Had to put my controller down for a few minutes. Something didn't feel right about Dom happily shooting Locust after that, with all his peppy phrases. I'm not saying it was the saddest gaming moment ever, but damn was it sad.
As for books, Carrie. It's just upsetting, everything about it. There is not a happy page in the book.
Dont know about saddest, but Leon was pretty damn tear-inducing.
And oh yeah, saw up above. The start sequence of Up was reeeeeealy touching. My gf cried, and I furiously wiped at "something in my eye"....
OH! One more! I cant remember the title, and I am loathe to give the story, but its about this old guy that tells the entire life story of him and his senile wife each day to her, and she only remembers after he's told it all... Something like that...it was so sad I was in shambles. If someone knows what movie it is a PM would be nice.
I rewatched Up yesterday actually. I can only recall a handful of occasions where I have cried at a movie, and this was one of them. Depressing would be the wrong word though. Even though it gets very sad at times, the film overall is hopeful and cathartic.
Has anyone seen Amores Perros? That's probably the most grim movie I have ever seen. Its very good, but its a vacuum of hope and happiness.
Apparently the movie Precious is unbelievably depressing. As Mark Kermode put it "it's all Shawshank and no Redemption". I'm curious to see it.
Of the books I've read, it's definitely got to be The Children of Húrin.
To put it one way, the start of the book has a guy being captured and tortured by Satan, and it subsequently gets much, much worse.
Basically, Satan curses his family for back talking him, notably his son and daughter. Everything they do results in more bad stuff, usually murder. In the end, both the children and the father commit suicide. Cheery, no?
Requiem for a Dream. The first ten minutes revolve around Jared Leto stealing his mum's television to pay for drugs. And that's the happiest part of the film. It's a fantastically directed movie, and the actors all do an awesome job, but goddamn, I refuse to ever watch it again.
I was alone one night and both american history X and The green mile was shown. After watching both movies in one evening I was feeling pretty down, o i had to watch a couple of scrubs episodes, ofcourse it happened to be "ben's funeral". I went to bed happy that night...
