Jesus, my choice was second to this movie. This takes the cake...what a depressing tale. I am so glad that guy died at the end. Oooooh man, I was pissed off that it didn't happen sooner.

Cool, I have a movie no one's mentioned yet, and it's the most depressing piece of 2 hours I've ever seen. It's korean and called A Moment to Remember.

Go watch it without reading anything about it.

Otherwise, I agree with Grave of the Fireflies, Clannad (which was at least as depressing as Kanon for me), Gurren Lagann's sadness was masked by its epicness but when you think about it, it does sound pretty depressing.

Requiem for a Dream is depressing, as well as The Fountain by the same director, though it's almost too confusing to really be as depressing as it should be. Very good sountrack helps both films, though.

As for TV... Dexter. Season 4.

As for games, they had their moments: certain Final Fantasies (VII, VIII, X, XIII, etc), Grandia 1&2 (can't speak for the others).

Anime: Bokurano, seriously, why has no one else seen it? But then again it was really happy at the same time...

I Stand Alone 1998, Gaspar Noe

He's probably better known for the hyper violent Irreversible (2002), but this is worth a go if you don't feel suicidal enough.

Also worth viewing:

- Children of Men
- Leaving Las Vegas
- Zoetrope
- Oldboy

one that hasn't been said yet that I'd like to add. The Time Traveler's Wife. Well, the movie anyway. Haven't read the book.

In Bruges has some heavy bits in it, too. And Marley & Me and Grave of Fireflies need to be said over and over, because they pretty much top the depressing movie list for me.

The Grey Zone. In exchange for vodka, blankets, and six more months of life, Jews volunteered to help run the gas chambers. In this movie they show every step of the process, from leading people in, to incinerating the bodies. It's an utterly hopeless situation that gets more utterly hopeless. Another good one is Osama, the story of a family of women in Afghanistan under the Taliban are suddenly left without a man to take care of them. They'll get arrested if they leave the house, so they dress up the girl like a boy, so she can provide for the family.

I heard that Up is a really sad film
Big difference between sad and depressing mate and it's not even sad overall, just has some sad bits. Take it from your 'I heard' that you didn't see it, I'd recommend giving it a go :)

Depressing medium hmmm... I found Taxi Driver depressingly boring, but that's just my age talking. On the properly depressing, nothing on the whole, but there are a lot of moments scattered across movies/video games/etc. Movie example that comes to mind is from Zwartboek, plenty of depressing moments (and done brilliantly well so it doesn't take away from it by being cliche).

Depression is a really strong word though. A lot of things can leave you feeling sad, but depression is a really strong emotion and rarely comes up in medium that's supposed to entertain, unless you're actually looking for it (which personally, I'm not).

edit:
Oh, I guess this counts since you mentioned TV series. I've found that CSI: Miami which I'm currently watching again is often leaving me depressed. Like properly depressed, knowing that while it's just a dramatization, the reality can actually be worse at times. If I think about it (and lately I've started to a bit), about the nature of some acts of violence, particularly murder, it's really depressing what human creatures are capable of and will do with no regard for human life.

I'm not into the whole pro-life thing, but I just find thinking about taking someone's life in anything but primal self defense completely morally impossible.

Tokyo Story... that is a movie that actually made me question the meaning of being human, the passing of time, the meaning of life and the realities of death, love, family and morality. A one of a kind masterpiece.

The aformentioned When the Wind Blows is so incredibly sad too.

Clean/Shaven is another really tough one.

God yes. I was sitting there on the verge of tears thinking "A Disney movie should not be this damn sad." However, the rest of the movie made up for that relatively small part.
Also, I don't really remember I am Sam very much, but I'm pretty sure it was depressing as well.

Hehe, I love that movie. More disturbing "art horror" than "depressing" though, in my mind.

Zoetrope trailer needed - I provide:

Existential Despair. Yay.

(Rather literally [pun]... It's actually a loose adaptation Kafka's "In The Penal Colony")

Arguably, Jacobs Ladder
Martyrs the french movie? That was more disturbing than depressing.
I would call it more exploitative than disturbing, but that is just me

another couple of really depressing films:

Umberto D:
when the main character decides he needs to murder his dog to spare him a life of poverty and hunger is so incredibly heartbreaking.

Fat Girl and Anatomy of Hell by Catherine Breillat, stagger me sideways, those are two really dark and distressing films, forget about Noe or any of those amateurs, this are serious soul killing, dark movies...

the news. seriously reality has been sucking more and more and more at least in america. i've heard of a lot of these other ones you guys are suggesting but haven't seen most of them, mainly 'cause i don't like watching things that make me sad. also Pooh's Grand Adventure (yes a winnie the pooh movie made by disney makes me cry) but only 'cause it reminds me of something... sigh.

That's not really Disney, it's Pixar. Disney was just the distributor.

Have to agree here, mostly heard some of the Brittish news. I know they're blowing it a bit out of proportion with the news coverage, but still find the basic essence of some acts awfully depressing. Like a bunch of kids chasing down another kid to stab him to death in broad fucking daylight. My mind just immediately jumps to how it would feel to be the kid running away from them and getting caught and it's just mind blowingly depressing.

Or forcing a kid to drink gasoline then lighting him on fire. JFC. Would just put those kids/people down like animals, they don't deserve to be classed and treated as human beings.

Maybe End of Evangelion.
I kept hearing about how the "end of Evangelion" was so depressing and messed up, so I watched the anime was all like "But that wasn't depressing, that was really hopeful and uplifting!", and then I found out that "End of Evangelion" is the name of a movie and I was all like *facepalm*.

That scared me. I looked in my inbox and saw that lol. Yeah I guess it is more disturbing than depressing but I saw it when I was young and it scared em at the time since I was scared of almost anything back then.
