Movies, I'd say Mystic River was pretty depressing but probably the most was Hotel Rwanda. I'd also have to agree with those who mentioned Requiem for a Dream.

Tokyo Story... that is a movie that actually made me question the meaning of being human, the passing of time, the meaning of life and the realities of death, love, family and morality. A one of a kind masterpiece.
Darn, can't believe I forgot that one. Agreed. On that, I would like to add Nobody Knows. Another great Japanese film.

And I just remembered a few more animes:
Saikano, RahXephon (the TV series, not the movie), and Interlude.

Begotten. that movie screwed me over so bad.

Hehe, I love that movie. More disturbing "art horror" than "depressing" though, in my mind.
That scared me. I looked in my inbox and saw that lol. Yeah I guess it is more disturbing than depressing but I saw it when I was young and it scared em at the time since I was scared of almost anything back then.
You're alright, man. :D

I'm just chuffed someone else knows begotten even exists! ;)

I've already been ninja'd extensively, but what the hell. Schindler's List. That was just.... what's the opposite of heart warming?

The episodes of Futurama where Fry has to give up his old dog encased in Dolomite, and the episode where he reconciled with his long dead nephew and brother.

But TV movie version, The culmination of the time travel twist in Bender's Big Score stand out.

Schindler's List and Grave of the Firefly tops it for me. Both movies made me feel like I'd been punched in the face after watching them.
Oh my god yes, on both of them, probably moreso in Grave of the Fireflies. Y'know when it feels like you've been punched in the gut after watching a sad movie? Yeh, I can't not get that feeling when I watch it.

My god I seriously almost cried when Fry let go of his dog, it was the saddest moment in the whole series

For me it would have to be Cocoon, I can't remember the sequel to well but I remember it was sad, but the first one had the seniors telling another senior that his sick wife can be cured by the magic pool but the old man said no it won't work or something of that nature. Then later his wife dies and that made a sad panda, but it really hit me when he went to the pool to find out that all the energy was drained and he couldn't save his wife he slowly put her in the water crying and almost the whole movie made me sad it had a few funny moments but it really made me sad because it reminded me of my grandfather's death, before I found out about his little problem when I loved him(note the past tense) so that movie is to me the saddest sorry if I spoiled anything but I don't know how to hide spoilers yet.

The Dark Knight.

The ending was very anticlimactic. When I want to see a superhero movie, I want to at least come out of it with a sense of justice and see an epic victory. I didn't buy my ticket thinking, "I can't wait to see Batman re-envisioned to be more like Watchmen". The movie was depressing and had too many pointless scenes. Batman can be many things, but above all he's not weak. And I feel the ending didn't do him justice.

Not sure about movies, but for anime I'm going with School Days. It wasn't cry-your-eyes-out depressing like Elfen Lied, it was the kind of depressing that just made me feel sick just watching it.

Put me down as another one for Grave of the Fireflies. I've never seen a film as relentlessly depressing. There's just one downtrodden moment again and again, and it doesn't get any better.

Sigh.

Mary and Max is one of the most depressing movies ever. It's about a little girl in Australia who has no friends and she writes a letter to a random person in New York whose address she got out a phone book. The Person is Max, a morbidly obese man with Asperger's syndrome. It is an incredibly sad movie but very good. It's the only movie I've ever cried during.
