Patapon. I bought it expecting to play a decent and to pass the time till something new comes up and yeah it was 20 bucks a good deal espescially for a new game. I've been a patapon fanatic ever since.

Deadly Premonition. I read all the negative press about it, got curious, bought it, and had the most fun with it I've ever had with a game in awhile. It's the quirkiness that got me.

Summoner: A Goddess Reborn. was tempted to buy it but wasn't sure. didn't get it but a few years later i borrowed it off a friend. on the way home on the train i read the instructions and it didn't seem like it would be that good. when i played it, it was great and SO much fun

Alpha Protocol.
I regretted pre-ordering it after reading some reviews.

When I played it I was amazed at the choices & consequences system and how much you control the storyline. The gameplay wasn't as bad as I expected. Graphics sucked for a 2010 game but still, I was hooked.

I didn't expect much from Max Payne 2. Now it's one of my favourite games of all time and I still replay it pretty often.

I rather enjoyed Too Human for a month on end. And I will stand by my decision that it was a decent game at least, if you take the bugs out of the game at least.

Another would have been The Force Unleashed. I don't know why. Guess I just find it fun destroying things in increasing different ways constantly.
I freaking loved Too human. The plot was quite good, the concept was interesting, it's just a shame dying carried no penalty, happened alot and the combat was quite bland at times.

Was that the second game in the series? I hated it soooo much compared to the first.

Lost Odyssey. I wasn't expecting much, but it's one of my favorite games now. I still have to go back and beat the Immortal actually.

Why did you think the Force Unleashed would be bad?
I can't speak for him...but the Apprentice in from the get-go was holding his lightsaber as many would say "Gangsta Style", which is...so stupid...

Reminds me of that orange ***** from the Clone Wars TV series.

To answer the OP: Bayonetta. I was expecting a fun hack and slash, and found probably one of my all-time favorites, if not best pick for 2010.

Borderlands. Seemed like a game which had a lot of ideas but wasn't going to pull them off. And it worked. It is some of the most fun I can have on the Xbox.

Arkham Asylum I also agree with. There are many ways it could have screwed up and it didn't, which was remarkable.

Red Dead Redemption, I bought it mostly for multiplayer with friends. I was never expecting the campaign to be one of the best I've ever played.
I bought this just because I needed a good sandbox game that was different. This game blew me away, and I love the multiplayer a bit too much. The single player is, next to Mass Effect 2, Resident Evil 4, and Half Life 2, the best single player I have ever played. It felt like GTA4, but it was so much more interesting and involving. It also didn't have Roman. Thank GOD for no Roman.

Seconded, actually.

Made me feel all nostalgic of how RPG's were, and should be made.

Castlevania SOTN. These days everyone reconizes it for the amazing game it is but back when it first came out in the PSone era, i was scepitcal about it. I'd played Castlevania games before and had some fun with them but they were kinda frustrating and too short. This game completly blew my mind. From the drastically redesigned combat, to the (for the time) amazing presentation to the shere crushing number of secrets SOTN came out of nowhere and rocked my world.

Call of Duty 4. I rented that and Bioshock, just because we had a coupon for 1 free extra game. I got a few levels of Bioshock done, went to play CoD 4, didnt touch Bioshock for the rest of the time we had it. Simply put, Call of Duty 4 was an astonishingly good game.

A game on the DS called Contact.
I have no idea what I was exacting but what I got was a nice quirky RPG.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Conan (PS3)
Both very enjoyable and Wolverine adult gameplay was a brave move and far better than the film.

To be honest, the most recent game i've played: Final Fantasy XIII. After all the shit and backlash it was getting from tons of people including strong FF fans, i was very worried about whether i'd like it or not. Since recently i've learned to judge things by myself more instead of what everyone else says and tried it myself.

Holy shit i was suprised, it was brilliant. It may keep getting attacked but i really don't care now, its not gonna change how i feel about the game.
