So only AAA games from this year don't count, right? In that case, I'll go with Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The OP wanted people to exclude AAA games from their answers to this thread.
Sometimes I can't tell if people do this on purpose or not. I'm gonna edit the title though.
Oh, bugger me, my mistake. Sorry for the mishaps, Risk of Rain it is!

Don't worry about it, at least you offered a legitimate answer xd I didn't mean to come off like an asshole this morning. Need more sleep it seems.

How is Risk of Rain? It caught my attention whilst watching Jimothy Sterling be shit at it.

Does The Walking Dead count? I only played it for the first time this year, and it's now my favourite game of all time, so it's definitely up there. If that's a bit too mainstream (considering it did top many GOTY lists last year), I'm going to have to go with Star Wars: Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight :) We Like Colons), which I did play before this, but on a computer that couldn't run it properly at the time and with little to no fun. That is a tremendously fun experience, and those live-action cutscenes are some of the most enjoyably goofy I've ever scene.

Also, my favorite strongly game-like experience which presents itself as a game but I can't quite bring myself to classify as one of this year is Katawa Shoujo, which I now apparently have to mention by law in every post I make on these forums. I did technically begin playing it last year, but I only got through one of the five paths before the year turned over and stuff. I just want to mention Katawa Shoujo some more. Go play/read/experience it. It's really damn good.

I just started playing Doom II recently. I haven't even finished it yet. But it's gotten even better, since I've been using the Brutal Doom mod! Thanks to Steam (and having a job), I've been able to play on with what I've been missing this year! The Serious Sam series, the Duke Nukem series, the Quake series (well, I did play Quake II before and tinkered with the first two 64 ports in the series), Shadow Warrior (the old one, though the new one looks to be the greatest shooter of 2013), Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Painkiller (thank you, Yahzee!), Singularity, System Shock 2, Xotic, Tribes: Ascend, Sonic CD, Psychonauts, Rayman Origins, The Binding of Isacc, World of Goo, Spec Ops: The Line, Skullgirls, eXceed: Gun Bullet Children, and The Stanley Parable!

So many good games!

I just finished Persona 3's The Answer epilougue. It singlehandedly swooped a mediocre but fun and relatively well made game from absoloute balls.

That's quite funny as it caught my attention whilst watching Totalbiscuit be shit at it. If you like roguelikes, you should by all means enjoy this game. The items, while some are expectedly lame, they still all serve some sort of purpose and feel (mostly) useful. Although you start with one class at the beginning, and it's not a bad one, you'll probably be eager to unlock another class, though it's good as all the classes feel unique and somewhat balanced. Multiplayer is fun, whether it be local or online. My biggest complaint is that once you get near the end, the framerate starts to dip, and with that, the speed of the game. It's really weird, ESPECIALLY in online multiplayer. My friends computer is a bit worse than mine and sometimes falls 5 seconds behind me in terms of a countdown timer. It's kinda weird, but not a deal breaker for me.

Huh, guess I had a lot to say. Bottom line, if you like this genre of games and take the time to get used to it, as it's a but unforgiving at first, you should enjoy it plenty.

EDIT: typo

Sounds interesting, the biggest gripe I have with games that are a bit random are when they havbe tonnes of items that are totally worthless and are mostly fleshed out with grind.

I'll pick it up in a steam sale though over Xmas as I'd be silly to buy anything on PC between now and then.

That I've played this year? ... Well, I could go and say Mario&Luigi - Dream Team Bros but, deep down, my favourite game that I've played this year is by no doubt Shin Megami Tensei - Strange Journey. It's one of the best RPGs I've ever played, and it's probably the best entry in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise ever. The story, the sci-fi setting, how they integrate menus and the visuals on the screens in the plot. For once, menus are not meta-gaming, they're actually integral part of the plot. That blew me away, and of course the gameplay and the visuals and the atmosphere, and the sounds... ... Why am I not playing it again? Ah, right. I have all those other games to finish first...

What would you define as a game, and how do you feel Katawa Shoujo differs from that? No real reason for asking, it's just a topic I find interesting :)
"What is a game" is quite a complex and interesting topic, and one I feel merits discussion, but after a good amount of consideration I came to a definition that I think works for me, that being "a number of interactive systems that interact with one other, designed with the specific purpose of creating a feeling or emotion in the user". This is, of course, just what I decided "game" means for myself, and can, and likely will, be debated.

The reason I can't consider Katawa Shoujo a game is that it only has the one system that is interactive, this being the choices. Your making a choice doesn't change the way you interact with KS, just the text you read. In a game, any choice would have an effect on another system, even if it's something as basic as moving left or right in a platformer affecting your ability for vertical movement by putting a block above you.

Am I making sense here? I'm having a bit of trouble trying to communicate what I'm thinking.

I finally played Far Cry 3 and that would have to be my pick. Honestly, I liked it more than any of the games that came out this year.
My favourite moment from the game was when I was stealthily infiltrating an enemy stronghold. I was planning my attack in the shadows and about to go for my first kill when I hear this low growl. I turn to the left and there's a tiger two feet away from me. He doesn't notice me since I am sneaking in the shadows. He walks right by and kills the pirate that I was originally going to kill. All hell breaks loose after this and I pick people off in the chaos while they try desperately to kill the tiger that is murdering them.

The Royal Trap is my definite winner, which makes it a shame it's so unknown. It's a VN set in a fantasy world where you have to solve a mystery and hook up with various attractive people, which on the surface sounds almost impossibly generic, but trust me, there are enough twists, turns, and just downright interesting situations and characters that it would be impossible for me not to love it.

Others I liked (in no order) were Gone Home, Eldritch, Shadowrun Returns, Pokemon Y, and Remember Me. All of them had either interesting story, fun gameplay, or just an inventive concept that I had fun with.

That's just unfair.

Spec Ops The Line just trounces everything else I played this year, if not most of the games I have ever played.

As for follow-ups, it'd have to be Shogun 2 Total War: I don't remember the last time I had this much fun with a strategy game.

All I need now is Fall of The Samurai and my life is ruined/complete.

Kentucky Route Zero is simply a gob-smackingly good game, and it's a shame it's not appearing in more GOTY lists. The quality of art and writing that went into the first two episodes exceeds what you'll find in any other game this year. I check Cardboard Computer's twitter feed on a daily basis hoping for news on the release of the third Act. They recently released a short game, The Entertainment, that is remarkable in its own right.

The Goty for me is state of decay. I loved the survival element to it and the feeling of being a real leader of a commune. I had managed to keep my original character alive so i used him the most as the leader.I enjoyed scavanging for resources to help my team and keep everyone alive to benefit the group.
A very enjoyable game that has renewed my interest in the zombie genre hopefully more games try something different instead of just shoot the zombie.

While there were some really good lesser known or not-so-well received games in 2013, there's only one game I can award this title to: Aliens: Colonial Marines. There graphics were like nothing I've ever seen before and the AI truly unique, I never knew what they would do next. The game perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Alien franchise into one game and so there is no contender more deserving of GOTY than is A:CM.
You know, the sad thing is, if they would've just focused on actually making the ****ing game instead of screwing around with their ****s the whole time, it really could have blown people away. The premise is sound, the base gameplay would be great, and the multiplayer would have been awesome. But **** THAT! Let's make a super misleading demo and play Pass the Blame when it comes out!

OT: Probably Red Faction: Guerilla. The destruction in it is just so sick-nasty, the single-player is very solid, and the multiplayer is actually surprisingly fun. I wish it sold more...

Whilst I agree you do realise you can swear on The Escapist right?? So long as you aren't directly insulting another user of the site.
