My comfort game is Blazblue: Calamity Trigger. There's just something oddly soothing about executing a perfect Genesic Emerald Tager Buster.

Persona 4 and Tales of the Abyss always manage to cheer me up as well.

Depends on why my day was bad/hard. If it was just difficult, I'll probably sit down with a little WoW (mindless entertainment), or pull up an old FF game and either kill the final boss, or do some of the sidequests. Or Super Mario RPG, that's always awesome

If it was frustrating, an FPS works, or a strategy game where I'm massively overpowered.

If I'm sad, Katamari Daimacy, or some other goofy/fun game

I can get lost in any game with a good story, but the one I usually turn to when I have a bad day is Gears of War. Sometimes it's just nice to shoot stuff.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies for the DS. It's my go-to game when I want to play something but don't know what to play. I just try to beat whatever highscore I have on whatever planet. I have it for the Wii, too, but firing up the DS is just so much simpler.

I mean what game do you like to play after a hard day to unwind? And/or is there a game that you hardly ever play but it is comforting that you know it's there but won't play for long lengths of time?

For me my hard day game is L4D the mindless massacre of zombies helps me unwind.
Also a game I like to know I have is FFVII, I just like to know I can go back and play a game that I loved.(still hasn't got old yet.)
Batman: AA. So much fun beating the crap out of hench men or just scaring the crap out of them as you take them out one by one silently.

Oh yes, it's a very satifying game

Diablo 2. If I just want to indulge in some cathartic slaughter, I have my high level diablo character run arround the low levels wiping out monsters and bosses with ease.

Isn't this the whole point of video games in the first place?

I'll go with the Touhou games. Challenging, fun and help me keep focus.

Rock Band 2. Sometimes i just need to do something I know I'm good at, no matter how trite.

And Myst. I've had the game for 15 years, and it is still the most austere and beautiful interactive media experience I've ever had.

Soul Calibur 2, because nothing makes me unwind like sticking a 7 foot sword up some skanky whore's bum.

Any Unreal Tournament works well for me. Audiosurf. Painkiller I suppose, when I'm on a single-player run of it and haven't finished yet. Quake 4 with the RLWeapons mod (makes everything do more damage, so you just run around cathartically and easily headshotting Strogg with the assault rifle, or onehitkilling most other bad guys with the bigger, funner weapons).

Believe it or not: Oblivion.

Since everything is leveled to you, its quite relaxing to just go around, and dungeon hunt. Unless you totally fucked up your character build.

Also:

Puzzle Quest. Nice way to kill some time.
