FF9. Why? Because it's not emo. The main character is actually upbeat about everything instead of being a whiney, moody, recluse.

I don't know about favourites, to be honest. Since I last saw a "Favourite FF thread" here, I've managed to play through all the GBA ones that have come out as well, so my favourites list now has to include Final Fantasy V and Tactics, which I'm really surprised I enjoyed.

Still, VII, VIII and X were fantastic, and I maintain that XII was incredibly dreary and actually felt like a chore to finish, especially thanks to the undeveloped and nauseating characters.

Perhaps excluding Basch.

Maybe.

EDIT: I forgot Crystal Chronicles for the GameCube. I really enjoyed that, it was a great change of pace, I thought.

I enjoyed 9 and in fact I am playing through it again now. Up to Cleyra, the first of the 2 strange trees. :D
That´s nice. I´m playing it too, only, for the first time (Don´t really know, why I didn´t buy it, like, years ago.) Just got back from burning Terra and next going for some more treasures. I´m very much pleased. Actually, I like every FF I´ve played so far, and now find myself unwilling to put them in any order. One has a great soundtrack, the other intense storyline, while some are simply enjoyable for no apparent reason.

I think I enjoy it because it's a bit less heavy than 7 and 8 were. All that amnesia business in 7 and time compression mumbo-jumbo in 8 drained the fun away a little bit. Not so much that they weren't enjoyable mind you.

3 Favs.
1) Tactics- I love the way you can fully customize your character. I started with the GBA version and remember how many hours I logged trying to learn every skill for certain characters
2) Cyrstal Chronicals- I know, I know. It's like the kid brother, usually forgotten about but still fun to play with. I just like the fact that you could finally play as a group.
3) FFXI (Final Fantasy Online)- Suprising isn't it. I've played most of the RPG FF's, but my favorite is the least liked. Sure FFXI has its faults. But I love that it never ends.

I agree. IX is more upbeat, as someone in here already said, than the two previous games. All of them are enjoyable, but IX has similar sense of humour as the older versions have, and it has a lot of little things to do and see, that make it less heavy. VII, on the other hand, still has a truckload of nostalgia attached to it, since it was the first FF game I played and also showed a new way of gaming. In a way, it´s outside critical evaluation, for me that is.

A tough one.

The only ones I even think about playing again are 7,9 and 10. The combat system in 12 was too experimental and those attack lines were so ANNOYING but also so USEFUL.

IX, for being a wonderful homage to the old games, a great intuitive system, my fave soundtrack of the series and the best Chocobo game.

With the exception of "the real" Final Fantasy 3 (you know, the 8-bit one with that rudimentary class system and stuff), all my favorite Final Fantasy games have been multiples of 3.

"Final Fantasy 3" (the nom de plume of Final Fantasy 6), Final Fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy 12. However, 12's gameplay suffered from being kind of uninspired and too much like 11, but I loved the story and soundtrack; Final Fantasy 9 was an excellent homage but I hated the "too late to do this sidequest" aspect; and Final Fantasy 6 was classic in every way but I realize now that it was actually kind of a "small" game overall with a few good ideas thrown in to mix things up.

Having played all of them except 2, 4 and 5 (I played the I and III remakes), I dont want to make lots of enemies here, and i can't think of many reasons why, and I've heard lots of constructive criticism to the contrary, buuut...

My favourite would to be VIII, I just loved the art style, Squalls evolution as a character and the quirky magic system was fun when you got used to it.

[Edit] Sorry matty575, missed your post, but i heartily agree with your views ^^

FFX was my favorite. I tried to like the others, but I really couldn't. I just wish Tidus wasn't such a wanker. But he's awesome at BlitzBall so I can forgive him a little.

I would have said Tactics but getting into a battle every one foot got annoying after ten hours.
Total agreement, except blitzball. Curse blitzball to some circle of hell so I never have to see it again.

I also liked 9 a lot, unfortunately I got 9, 8 and 7 all used and at points each game ended up freezing. That really wasn't the end of my world for 7 and 8 though. I just couldn't care that much.
