12 is great here are my top 5 (spin offs included)

1. FF8 - good story love the battle system love the no mp/stocking system and great story/characters

2. FFTactics - AMAZING story great gameplay infinite replay value, and Ramza was an amazing character

3. FF4 - the only ff so far to have me completely encaptivated by its story, loses to ff8 and tactics due to no atb bar, and numerous other flaws that made this near perfect game a cut below ff 8/tactics

4. FF12 - what can I say I really liked the gambit system, the story was just amazing, I got over 150 hours of gameplay before I beat it 100% and I will say it again, Amazing story

5. FF2 - though not as dificult as most others, this one made up for it in story, and character build, it also started the chocobo themes

I'm sure the Spoony One would be furious, but my favorite is 8.
He would be very mad. Too bad he doesn't come round these parts.
OT: 9. I loved all the charcters, mainly because not ONE of the main characters were brooding emos wanting to cut themselves. I especially like ViVi, with his deep backstory, and him realizing he is just a clone, but must overcome that.

im gonna be honest im an ff7 fanboy. apart from the mobile phone games, i have all the ff7 related games and the movie. this might not fit into this discussion but i personally think that square enix are at the edge of the plank here with there plan to release 3 ff13 related games so close to each other, now personally i thought 12 sucked a bit, i played it until after fighting firemane(flaming horse boss) and to be honest i got bored, switched it off and traded it in. with ff13, yes they might do an excellent job but they do kinda have alot riding on it.

FF3. or 6 for those of you keeping a list and actually care for correctly numbering the mess Japan made.

Gamed it on the SNES, not the Anthology one for Playstation, although I do have that one as well and they're basically the same with just little differences. This is one of the few I liked from the whole Final Fantasy line, other ones being FF5 and FF7. Add more numbers and the main character begin to loose way too much brain matter to even be likable.

Uhhh I think 7 covered the whole braindead thing I mean sephiroth went off his rocker and decided to meteor (verb) earth and cloud... well he just was braindead for a while >.> lol he seems to get braindead a lot, maybe because he gets free rides that way (zack + motorbike and tifa + wheelchair) 8 squall was smart, 9 well... zidane just doesnt.. erm, well at least hes smarter than steiner, 10 kinda lost it, and 12 well f**k vaan he doesnt deserve his role, I say let balthier be the main character

Honestly, my favourite is 10. This may be because it's the first one I played, but I just loved the setting. The style of it and it's imagination reeled me in. Second would probably be 6, for more or less the same reason. For some reason I just never caught on to 7. To me it just seemed so far removed from the ones I'd played before. I still enjoyed it, but not as much. Another reason it probably didn't rank higher is because when I got to the 2nd disc all my save data mysteriously vanished. That ticked me right off, and I'm currently playing through it VERY slowly (cos of Uni) to get back there.

The only one I've liked has been XII. I've always disliked FF, so I was pleasantly surprised that I really loved XII.

Four, Japanese four, American 2. Followed closely by 5.
I haven't completely played through any of them, but 4 is definitely my favorite so far. It sort of seems like FF lost its magic when Hironobu Sakaguchi stopped making them after 9. The new games he's made are awesome, though (Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon).

I've only played a few, but I know enough to like the following ones for these reasons

All of the Summons' are epic, from Belias, all the way to Zodiarck. The bosses are excellently rendered, and Yiazmat is the damn most epic boss battle in the history of the series. The story is awesome, asides from the main character having nothing to do with the story, AT ALL!

Mostly because it involvews both Tonberries and Cactuars, but also because the game's limits are extremely high, and if you do it right, can get tremendous stats.

And that's why FF rocks.

I got a three way tie between FF6, 7 and Tactics: WotL. All really great stories and are the peak of the series. Crisis Core and FF2 are close contenders as well. Crisis Core proved to be a great stand alone game and prequel to 7 and thus far the only good thing to come out of that anthology. FF2 has one of the most brilliant stat systems that is heavily underused in RPGs. I wanna see more of FF2's character build system, and hey it had a fun story too.

I have yet to play 12 so I reserve my judgment for it. I highly doubt it is as bad as so many make it out to be. I mean I highly doubt it is even close to being as bad as that horrible train wreck that is FF8.
We talked about this before, but I have to agree with FF2. It's the only Final Fantasy game I can even remotely stand, as the other ones were just too grindy for me, and VII's sense of style made me want to puke my Japanese upbringing out just so I could feel that I was never a part of that culture.

I'm playing for my first time FF9. I'm at disc 3 and stuck a bit at Kuja's desert palace. However, I've pretty much enjoyed its mix between new and old of the series.

Played through the tutorial of FF8. So far, it is confusing. The junction system is a bit complicated but I get used to stuff pretty quickly.

So my answer is:
Loving part
-I'm loving 9 so far.
-I loved 7 but i'm not "that" fanboy.
-6 introduced the series for me. Therefore, it deserve an honorable mention.
-4 had a good story.

The "meh" to the bad.
-5 had a good system but I didn't like the story. (Except a few parts and the big twist (You know what I'm talking about)).
-1, liked some part. Although, I lost interest.

Looking foward of playing it

-8, looks promising.
-Tactics, trying to find a cheap copy
-2, the story looks interesting.

Maybe someday:

10, 12 and 13.

I'm a huge fan of FF7, it's the game that got me into JRPGs and remains my favorite to this day
