Chrono Trigger

Plain and simple really, it's easily the best RPG that came out prior to the Playstation era and it acheived a level of great game design that will likely never be seen again.

Right now I'm pondering how Chrono Cross could have been... you know...good.

If the dream team stayed together, it certainly would have been better, but I doubt it would have kept the same standard of Trigger.

The Half-life series is an obvious choice, absolutely brilliant games with an engaging story. However, I have to say for nostalgias sake that my favorite game ever is FFVII, mainly because it was my first real rpg and showed me that video games are not only a source of mindless fun, but can be a medium of powerful storytelling and immersion.
