multiple thoughts:
Mass Effect 2 was of course great, enough of you have already said it, so I don't need to justify it
Red Dead: Redemption was just great
Splinter Cell: Conviction was also really good, it was the first stealth game that I ever played, and it was a satisfying experience
and now the one that nobody saw coming, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, fucking hell that game was fun to play, I had the first one, and was curious to see where the sequel could go, and I was not disappointed, the money getting mini-games were now less trivial, the four available beam katanas were all good enough to use alternately as opposed to one simply replacing the other like in the first, and overall I just had tons of fun with it, and really, in my book, if a game makes me enjoy it as much as I enjoyed No More Heroes 2 on gameplay alone, the developers have more than succeeded at delivering a quality product.

Honestly, I can't really pick. The last year I've really gone on a buying spree which resulted in me barely playing the fucktons of games I bought.

Biggest contenders would be Bad Company 2, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (though I haven't finished that one yet) and Mass Effect 2. Runner-ups are Mafia 2 (expected more open-world-ness, but fantastic atmosphere), Fallout: New Vegas (could've won if only for the bugs) and Red Dead Redemption (was a bit of a chore at times, especially in Mexico).

But I've played a lot of games this year for the first time that have been released before 2010, but I don't count those for this. If I would, Metro 2033 would rank pretty damn high as well.

The Witcher (because I just started playing it this year)
I've bought that as well, and I wonder, does the combat get a bit more exciting?

Halo: Reach for me. It had it's flaws, like most of the characters being stale, and framerate, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Uh, what? It came out on March 16, 2010. >.>
Oh, I thought late 2009. Well, then off it goes, right next to my other contenders for GOTY 2010.

As I was away for a rather long period of time working and didn't have my games with me, I'm going to simply go for the game which I've played the most hours on (and therefore the most enjoyment because, that would just be stupid if I've played it as long as I have without enjoying it) which is... Final Fantasy XIII.

I'm quite happy to accept the issues and differences the game has and I'm more than happy with it. I started it late in comparison to most people when it first game out (like, 4 months late) but I can seriously say I can't really remember a game that I've played that much this year.

[sub]Note, I have loads of 'new' games I'm late to play as well, such as RDR and so on - but they may have to be next year's GOTY for me because, I'll just simply be too late for this year :( [/sub]

I can't make a decision yet because my family shops for Christmas presents as early as October. From the end of September until Christmas? No buying yourself possible Christmas presents. House rules. It's a bit annoying, but I usually get most of my wishlist and the delay pretty much guarantees that important patches will be released (looking at you, New Vegas).

As it stands right now, my top would be RDR, but given that Brotherhood and New Vegas were my top two items (read: virtually guaranteed), I can't make my decision until post-Christmas. Given what I've seen of Brotherhood, it's likely to usurp first place.

As for Mass Effect 2, I'm waiting for the PS3 release.

I'll say the same thing I said in the last thread like this one:

Heavy Rain. 16 playthroughs and counting. Great story, 'MUCH better than it sounds' gameplay, and a sense of fear of death during life threatening situations better than in any horror game ever (yes, including Silent Hill 2). No game in my life impacted me as much as Heavy Rain, and so far, only LA Noire and maybe another game by Quantic Dream have ANY perspectives of chaning it any time soon.

Seriously, if you have a PS3, go check it no matter how much you hate QTE's (note: There is not as much of them in there as you may think there is). It's just worth it.

Really good year for gaming, this one. I'm inclined to go with Red Dead Redemption, as I know that it has, empirically, a lengthy and captivating story, phenomenal graphics, refined gameplay and absolutely stellar voice acting, but there are other titles I've enjoyed as much, if not more. Vanquish, PoP: Forgotten Sands, and Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom.

And I just remembered Civ 5! Damn, too much choice!

It's the only game that has entertained my all the time, every time this year.

That or World of Warcraft cataclysm.

Personal pick: Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Great single player, great multiplayer. A few complaints with controls and the ending, but the good FAR outweighs the bad.

Runner-up: Red Dead Redemption. The other posts put it better than I can.

Games I regret not playing in time to have a better opinion:
Mass Effect 2, Fallout New Vegas, Heavy Rain

Spent most of '10 playing '09 games...

If it weren't for all the bug's ( Cause i can't play for 5 fucking minutes without a crash ), it would be New Vegas, however i will stick with Metro 2033.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent also take's a special place...

Are we going by "Games that came out in 2010" or "Games that came out a couple years back but I've only gotten around to playing them in 2010"?

For me its gotta be

Mass Effect 2

Runner ups: Stalker SoC, Dragon Age, Mount & Blade, GTA IV
