The best game I probably Played this year would be Super Mario Galaxy 2.
However the game I liked most and had most fun with was Singularity....

I'm quite surprised Starcraft 2 has barely been mentioned. So... Starcraft 2!

I'm not going to lie - Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep.

LE GASP! A non-360/PS3 game?! Surely you jest Falsey!

My point is, BBS took the PSP and pushed way past the boundries interms of gameplay and graphics. Sure it wasn't as great as games like ME2 and New Vegas but it's the one game this year that I've actually been impressed with.

My top three contenders (in order):
Metro 2033
Red Dead Redemption
Fallout: New Vegas

2033 is a brilliantly atmospheric game that fully deserves the top slot due to it's tense, suspenseful gameplay and excellent pacing. RDR is a solid second place with perhaps the best campaign storyline in a game I've ever played, and with the addition of the Undead add-on pack a healthy dose of good old fashioned fun is added to the mix as well. New Vegas takes (a perhaps controversial) third place. I know people have complained about bugs and glitches making the game unplayable, but in over eighty hours of gameplay I have (luckily, by the sounds of it) only encountered a handful of glitches - most of them minor and graphical in nature, and only two that required a reload/reboot. Because of this I have been able to enjoy the game hassle free, and I can attest to the immersive, intricate gameworld Obsidian have created - even if they did have to shoehorn it into Bethesda's engine.

Mass Effect 2, it currently is my favorite game ever. Nothing else this year came even close for me.
I also have one for biggest letdown of the year, The Force Unleashed 2.

I'm going to be completely unoriginal and say Mass Effect 2. Truly an amazing game.

ME2 was too, IDK, shallow, for me. I did one play through in the space of a weekend and had no desire to do a second (thank god I only borrowed it).
what ME2 was too shallow? Thats absurd its a deep and rich game with many difffernt side quests/ missions and people to talk too. The dialoge is deep and really nicely done (except when it isnt). Yes its annoying that you have to get elements by scanning planets, yes the dialouge choices can be misleading But this game is rich and deep in a way that most games can not match. Also how did you complete it in one weekend. I'm at jack's recruitment mission and 21 hours through. (4th playthrough. insane difficulty)

Havn't played RDR.

BFBC2 is really good that has really good multiplayer, (better than reach in my opinion.) but it's single player is short, linear and shallow. But still in top 5 games this year I think.

Please remeber its just an opinion

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood - great singleplayer which is long (35 hours to do everything) to keep you occupied and pretty fun multiplayer

Runner up - Red Dead Redemption for the reasons countless people have mentioned before me

dishonourable mention - Medal of Honour - was wanting this to be my game of the year but they fucked up everything badly. First game I ever returned

RDR: (first cowboy game that works...
GUN came before it and was really great as well. In fact a lot of the gameplay style seems to come from that (and yes GTA). I'd suggest checking it out since it will only be like £5 or so now.

-No inventory
-No control over party equipment
-Limited control of party in mission beyond go here and shoot if you feel like it.
-All missions were various flavors of go here, shoot this. Basically just a series of corridors and chest-high walls. The galaxy, in general, just felt small. There was little to no exploration to do. No random planets to visit, and the places you could visit felt very small and claustrophobic.
-Really stupid method for persuasion. Why does how good or evil I've been make me more persuasive? Not only does it make no sense, it means you have to be all good or all bad to get the best ending, which is a kick in the groin.

Overall, I did like the game, and will probably buy it when the price drops a bit more. It just wasn't anything I'd call a GOTY contender.

If you found ME2 rich, I'd recommend checking out BioWare's other offerings: Dragon Age, KotOR, Jade Empire, and of course Baldur's Gate. ME2 was, in fact, the least rich and shallowest game they've made yet (though, DA2 is looking like it might challenge that. God I hate EA.)

It's on steam right now for 15 quid, would you recommend it?
I bought GUN a few months after it came out. Ain't worth it, really. Unless you get it for a console. It's a pretty terrible port from the PS2, and it shows. Wait for it to go on sale (christmas sale coming up soon, after all) or don't waste your money. There's a reason it's never gotten much publicity, and that's because it's a pretty poor game. Not horrendous, and if you really dig the western scene you might enjoy it, but there are a lot of poor design decisions. Just thought I'd offer my two cents. :3

Minecraft.

It's sold over six hundred thousand copies by word of mouth and it's not even finished yet. GOTY easily, and has the potential to be Game of the Decade.

Edit: If Minecraft doesn't qualify then Amnesia: the Dark Descent. Never mind scariest game, it's the scariest anything I've experienced since The Shining.

I have to say Fallout: New Vegas. I am a huge fan of the old fallout games and FO3 was a big dissapointment for me. Although there are bugs that can kill you AND your computer, I'm hoping for a decent patch.
