You get a cookie for being awesome. The only thing I would add to the defense of FF6 is that Kefka is like a more comical version of Heath Ledgers Joker, which is automatic win in the villain category. He was amazing due to the fact that the instant you first see him, he sparks rage and fear in the player, something inside just clicks saying "I am going to hate this guy SO MUCH". His ability to stand out and his obnoxiousness make you love and hate him.
The thing that stands out the most about him and I think is near universal for all gamers who've played the game.. his LAUGH.

I've also for over 15 years, loved what they were able to do with FF6's sprite animations.. they actually work pretty well at conveying emotion.. without voice acting, without motion capturing.. just pure animation with something 24 pixels high.

His laugh and that sadistic theme music he had (not dancing made, I'm talking bout the OTHER music) just went so well with him. A down right bat shit insane bad guy with NO redeeming qualities so you just utterly hate him, there's no feeling any sort of sympathy for him. And yes, the sprite animations were awesome, as damn good as chrono triggers.

IX made me die a little. X gave me hope. X-2 made me drool like a fanboy. When they started releasing FFVII spin-offs, I started looking for the ECG so I could pull the plug. At XII, the series is now dead to me.

I started getting skeptical when X-2 came out, but it officially died for me with XII. You didn't "play" it. You programmed it and watched an interactive movie.

Dancing Mad is just.. epic.. the one thing I will give credit for is that One Winged Angel is an equally good boss theme music.

Kefka's mischievous little theme is also really really good.

But yeah.. Kefka is just a guy you love to hate.

Poisoning an entire river to wipe out a seiged castle, including killing your own imprisoned soldiers, enslaving a girl with a mind control device and using her to torch cities with magic and wipe out entire legions of imperial soldiers (he's a general in the Empire, as well) just to test out her abilities, killing other imperial generals nonchalantly after decieving them, killing his own emperor that he pretends to be loyal to.. "There will be no one left to worship us..." and then boots him off the side of a floating continent like it's no big deal..

I mean the guy serves nobody but himself.. he even attacks the Empire's own allies (Figaro).

He's also a rank coward, and prefers to have people fight illusions, smoke and mirrors, rather than facing them directly.

.. all those things you just absolutely hate.. make him such a great villain.

I started the playing the series at FFVII and liked all of them till FFXI & FFXII. I even liked FFX-2 and by that I mean the gameplay was so fun that I did not pay much attention to the dreadful story.
Same here. I'm going through III DS version right now (again), and I've never played 5 or 6 (I know, I deserve to be killed in a fire. I'm getting to them.)

The first FF game I played was FFVII and I really liked it. As well as the first FF game it was also the very first video game I ever played. I really enjoyed it. I loved Cid. He was my favorite.

And then I got FFVIII and...I just didn't enjoy it as much. The characters weren't nearly as likable. Squall was just boring. Rinoa was even more obnoxious then Aeris (but didn't do us the favor of dying). I really loved the Materia system so I wasn't as big a fan of the junctioning system.

Then I held out and tried IX because I heard it was like some of the old FF games that I'd never been able to play. I liked the character classifications. I thought that was cool (though, of course, I missed the freedom of the Materia system). But I hated Zidane and Garnet. But, I did like Steiner, Freya and Vivi. They had enough personality to keep me interested.

But the villain was like...just...not someone I could take seriously. So I put off beating the game for awhile and just played the sidequests--which those were fun.

And then X came and....no. And then X-2 and I gave up on Final Fantasy.

And then they made a FFVII movie and two extra games (Crisis Core and Dirge) and now they're just milking it. That makes me sad.

He was the epitome of human apathy, greed, hatred, and every other negative aspect of humanity. Loved how his mischievous song basically paralleled and personified his progression through the story. Starts off annoying and cynical and builds to a mass of glorious terror and cynicism, had a real "I am going to make you fucking suffer and fear me" feel to it, or as I would classify it as glorious destruction. He was a stereotypical villain done right thats what he was.

considering, I started late in the series it isn't dead for me at all. I don't care what came before ff7 because I never played them, I hear they are good but I doubt that I will ever play them all the way through if at all soooo. I think that western RPGs are far out pacing JRPGs now adays but I still enjoy the occasional JRPG which my favorite happens to be FF series....but then again I find it hard to play shooters more then once and find it hard to play them online for more then a few months so....yeah I'm that guy

Nobody ever claimed that you need to be killed in a fire, just get to them when you can I think you'll like em ;)

The last new FF i played was X, after that i replayed the GBA iterations of the old FFs (1,2,4,5 &6). XI was mmo, X-2 bleh, and XII didnt bother to look at it. Besides western RPGs were starting to be more appealing. God Bless Baldur's Gate 2!!

6= Couldn't hold my interest. Too many characters made it a cluster-f**k and I stopped caring about their individual stories.
7= Over-rated, but still good. Yay for Sephiroth and Aeris, nay for crappy story/ending.
8= PURGE THE UNCLEAN! 'Nuff said.
9= The last great one. Lacked emo and each character had a purpose rather than being interchangeable. My fave.
10= Good, but the cracks were showing. Best summoning system, but combat in general was so boring (imo).
11= Brave, jumping to a MMO. Too slow though. I didn't play it for long.
10-2= Characters always lack mystery in sequals, so interest wanes. Bitchin' combat system ruined by presentation and "Princess Dress-Me-Up" (otherwise known as Dress Spheres).
12= Stupid main character balanced by Ashe (She's a widow. Knocked me for six, let me tell you...) and Balthier. Combat that was little more than a wind-up toy. Cliche story. Also, you kill Chocobos. Suckage.
13= Sword-gun weapon looks sucky. Sounds like a decent combat system though. Demo out soon :)

Try 6. The Esper system is what the Materia system is based on (you equip an esper, it teaches you spells, and gives you certain bonuses when you level up with that esper equipped, allowing you some customization over your characters) (not to mention you can summon your esper in battle)

they started dying after X. FF VII was the best followed closely by IX. however i feel the VIII was by far the most disappointing, the draw system was not very intellegent, your chaacters got weaker if you used magic

I've been on and off with the series through history. I adored the first Final Fantasy I ever found on a gameboy (FF Adventures or something similar) though I could never beat it. I enjoyed six and bought my ps1 to enjoy seven. I purchased eight and gave up on it (train station in disk 1, got lost), and I have twelve, but did not enjoy it nearly as much as the first three.

At one time I played Final Fantasy Tactics, but tactics games are not something I enjoy, so I cannot give an unbias view on it. The same goes for Dirge of Cerberus.

Now I am waiting for the next big jrpg to come out. I don't necessarily care who the title belongs to so long as it's fun. If it was another Final Fantasy, so be it. The only thing that ever annoyed me about the series is how they will take any game, buy over any franchise, and slap Final Fantasy on the cover for press. It could be a game called 'Brush my teeth!" and I'm sure Square would try to claim it by renaming it, "Final Fantasy: The Toothbrusher Tales." If the people who owned the series had some balls to come up with new franchises, new names for new games, and stick with rpgs, they would be better received by the public. That and they should stay far away from movies, as none made were ever successful.

When they decided to simultaneously rip-off World of Warcraft and Star Wars, while at the same time removing everything that made either of them any good.
Seriously? How can you even begin to explain yourself since FF was released 17 years before WoW. And I'm a bit confused on the star wars reference as well...
You obviously haven't played Final Fantasy XII...I envy you.
Not enough apparently..i saved the knight girl again...and had that nasty battle with one of the judges after the laserbeams and alarms. Then played for about a halfhour..and never picked it up again.
