Never. I had my first one 2 years before it RRoD'd on me, so MS replaced it for me. Works just fine.

How cute, did you forget that consoles cost money? You complain that threads like this are stupid and then proceed to ask "Why give up on any console?" A question that is in itself stupid since consoles and indeed gaming in general cost money and time. If someone had a car that constantly broke down or otherwise did not satisfy them would it be surprising, if said individual went out and got a different car or started taking the train or bus more? I hate to state the obvious but just because you are happy doesn't mean that other people are. Especially when you consider just ho overwhelmingly bad the overall failure rate for the 360 is.
Hmm.. Money would be an issue if Microsoft wouldn't fix the consoles for free. *shrug*.
And yes, why give up on a console? I enjoy the 360 exclusives like Left4Dead and DeadRising, why would I give that up because of a problem with it? Especially if the company will fix it for free because it realizes there is a problem.
Also, have you ever heard of fanboyism? I know some PS3 owners who'd never admit that the PS3 has problems, but thanks to the firmware update, PS3's have been failing. Oh noes! Mine failed and did I give it up? No. I manned up and got it fixed.

What I'm actually trying to say (your quoted post), was why make a hate thread? Like it or not, these threads normally turn into, "ZomgZ 360s SUCK BAWLZ", which ends up offending someone and starting a flame war.
Yes, 360s had high failure rates, but to my knowledge, that rates been going down because of the new systems. Also, 360 has extended the warranty to 3 years, which is awesome. So I can't complain because heck, if I get a problem, my console will either be fixed replaced with a new console.

When I was shopping for a next gen console:

I really dislike sony (especially ever since they closed Lik Sang; no I'll never forgive them) and was looking for any alternative but when I was finding out that even my really responsible (clean their consoles with canned air kind of) friends were getting rrods (yes some got it more than once), I backed away. None of them got this disc problem though.
Anyway, if it's between a well made product made by a company I personally dislike, and a poorly made product made by a company I don't personally dislike as much, I'll go with whatever was properly made.

That said, my last friend to get the rrod, got one of those new "jasper chip" models as his replacement. They aren't supposed to get the rrod so you might as well give it one more try if you still have the warranty coverage. Third time's a charm; but then three strikes, y'erout.

I haven't yet. If they are willing to fix it for free when It's broken I see no reason to give up on it

Never and I won't. I think the RROD has been blown out of proportion. I've got it twice and gotten free replacements (the second was an upgraded jasper model with no extra charge.) I found the process of replacing it very easy. And while it did take 2 weeks to come back I was able to (and you should be able to) amuse myself in other ways. So while I'd prefer not to get the RROD I won't switch consoles because of it.

If I made a thread called "When did you give up on the PS3" There'd probably be the same amount of people saying they didn't. People are always having console wars and with the PS3 and 360 I don't understand it. They are both very good consoles with very good games. I bought a 360 because it had more games at the time and was cheaper. If I'd bought a PS3 I doubt I'd be any less happy with it.

Xbox 360, why can't I quit you?
Oh, I still want to go back to Mass effect save in the sequel and I still have a whole bunch of other games.

So what happens when your 360 falls outside of the three year extension? Your free repair is suddenly not so free. My own 360 just barely qualified for the extension had it failed about a month from now I would have been shit out of luck. With a good chance that the next console they send to me will fail as well. I'm supposed to be okay with this? A fundamentally flawed design which causes the product to fail by a ridiculous amount; which leads people to go through four and five units? Sending the machine back for weeks at a time instead of actually using the machine? Living with the fear that the machine will die if it is actually used?

If Microsoft was serious about addressing the flawed design of the 360 they would have recalled the product. What they did do is more like a food company leaving beef on the market that is contaminated with some bacteria the gives people mild diarrhea; offering to pay the medical bills of those afflicted instead of pulling the bad products and getting the problem fixed once and for all.

If it's not accepting disk's and making 2 little grinding noises just put a lense cleaning disk in for a minute or two, problem solved.

That happened to mine about 3 hours ago.

Honestly, i'm on my third..... I guess i really should have given up eh? Its lucky number 3 for me tho, this time i bought an effing Elite...... first gen xbox i had 3 as well, and my 3rd one has to warm up for 30 miniutes before it plays. Microsoft hates me. Unfortuneatly, Microsoft has the best titles and online experience *flame shield, its just my firsthand opinion* so i'm at their mercy.

I'll keep this as short as possible. I know there's no point in arguing, and while you do make valid arguments, I just can't help but sense a slight bit of problem with the above statement. Even on this site, Microsoft put $1billion dollars into the repair of the 360's. Now, even to a successful corporation, a billion dollars is nothing to laugh at. They offer to fix the problem.

Now, if you want to make the argument that a company doesn't care, why not look at Sony as well? You don't see me being bitter that I had to PAY MONEY WHEN MY PS3 BROKE BECAUSE OF THE FIRMWARE UPDATE. Did Sony fix it for free? Hell no. I paid for it. And as a kick in my butt, I basically had to pay for my console to be fixed because of a system update. (Hehe, kind of ironic.)
But, did I say, "Sony's a terrible company and deserves to burn in the fires of the 3rd circle of hell!"? No, I didn't. I was kind of upset, but would I give up my console for that? Nope.

I'm trying to say, a console with a problem doesn't mean I'll give it up. If I did, I'd give up PC's because they got bugs, or Wii's because the controllers don't register, or my 360 and PS3 for breaking.

I will agree with you on a few points though. It sucks that Microsoft can't recall all of it's consoles, but at least they have put a large chuck of money (and refunded people who paid) towards fixed the RRoD problem. Also, since Microsoft has realized the problem, they've made the new systems more RRoD proof.

But, I think some of your other statements were rather strange. Why would I live in fear that my console would die? It's been fine. It messed up on me once and I got it fixed. If it messed up again (I doubt it), then I'll just get it fixed again. Same goes for my PS3.
Also, I've only been through two units. My first one I bought while I lived overseas, it wouldn't work in the US because of the power cords and regional stuff. My second 360 is the one I've had fixed, once. I have no fear. If it breaks, what would I do you may wonder? Probably go outside and interact with people. Or I could just play on my computer, Wii or PS3. And if my PS3 breaks while my 360's away, I'll just play Wii, or my monopoly board game.

Never live in fear. Especially of something so small and seemingly meaningless (a console).

Either this is a very subtle troll, or he is sick of his breakbox (my consoles nick name). Either way, I didn't give up, and stuck at it, and it works now.
Nope, not a fan of trolls. I actually only posted this on the spur of the moment and I come back to find several pages of comments. Who would have thought it?

well ive not given up on my xbox yet because it hasnt given up on me. ive yet to have my xbox break once it's never failed me. Ive had my xbox now for 2 years maybe longer and its the arcade version which has been said to break eaiser than elites and the premuim package. But heres the thing my xbox has chugged away for two years now without a glitch where as my friends xbox's have died and needed repairing (the xbox's that have died were either premuims or elites). so i wont give up on microsoft just yet

before it even came out... GO ps3...
i don't know, knowing microsofts problems with hardware and software i knew it would be awhile til a 'perfect' system came from them, plus i knew the ps3 would be better in the long run....so i stayed with the sony products

I haven't, sure it stopped working two weeks in from getting it (not a red ring just stopped), I sent it away got it back two weeks later and have never ever had a problem since.
Had to go and say that, one potential red ring later.

I'd have to say two years ago, I was on leave for christmas, decided to pick up a "microsoft refurbished" 360 from gamestop, since they'd just gotten a shipment of 4 in, and a copy of bioshock... got to the dashboard and: rrod.

took it back, got another one... game loaded up and: rrod.

took it back, got another one... finally reached a playable level and: rrod.

took it back, got the last one they had... got to the dashboard and: rrod.

rather than cry about it, I simply took both the game and console back, got a full refund, and since then I've decided to devote any money I happen to have to games for my ps3. I don't hate the 360, but I'll be damned if I'll be the person to own one.

edited for removal of anachronism.
