Depends. Yet too often Evil is cooler (if stupid), because good is simply "too dumb to live".
Just look at DUngeon Keepers.

I like it when whoever is on the good/bad team avoid falling into hollywood clichés.

Evil is always cooler than good.
Even when the bad-guy is designed to be utterly rediculous, like Eggman!

Two words on this - Dungeon Keeper

That is all.
I was actually scanning the replies in this thread hoping that someone would post this, or I would have to officially feel too old to keep breathing. Thanks for that.

I swear when a character becomes too good or righteous they start to become evil. Fallout 3, for example, rewards you for slaughtering the Slavers in Paradise Falls, because murder isn't evil, is it?

Oh, also, obligatory Sephiroth.

How come in games you glorify being Evil but in RL you dont laugh at the assholes dieing in Haiti or talk about how awesome the Serbian massacre of Muslims was.

Is it some sort of Societal immasculation that has had you stow your balls away in the overhead compartment of condsideration and tolerance.
Because that would only serve to further isolate us from an already distant society. If I'm a dick in game, nobody but myself needs to know. If I'm a dick in real life, I risk losing my job, my friends and any social standings I my have once had.
So basically its because you dont have the balls to be able to do what you want, yea seems to fit in with the reason I gave.
Big words. You know what happens to 'evil' people in real life? Mostly they get imprisoned for life or get killed, depending on the country. In a video game, if you're a homicidal douchebag, you're not actually hurting anyone. You're just killing 1s and 0s. In real life if you kill someone, you're taking away decades of experience and emotion in an instant. That shit's real. So no, I don't think it's because he has no balls, I think it's because he's not a complete fucking idiot.

OT: I think the Empire in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is way better than the rebellion, but not in much else. That's just my opinion though.
It has nothing to do with victimization, it is about the hypocritical glorification of "evil". It doesnt matter whether the people are real or not, the character (the evil one) is viewed positively because they throw morality to the wind and have the freedom to act out their intentions. It has nothing to do with murder, the mere fact that you are so concerned about going against what society deems as right that makes you a coward.
This is why we all heart the anti hero. less law-abiding, but not a completely evil douche.
EDIT: On topic, I love playing a soviet russia in red alert 2, or the germans in any multiplayer WW2 game.

All the synth units in Half-Life. They look awesome.

Also, Richard from LFG, anyone? (though he may or may not count as evil - or not)
I think Richard counts as chaotic neutral or chaotic evil

OT: Good guys are sissies for the most part

The title of this thread has nothing to do with anti heros, but Evil vs Good.

Ill ad that the coolest anti heros I can think of are Bill the Butcher and Daniel Plainview and they were ruthless.

The Empire in Star Wars. By a long shot.

The Helghast. Also, the ISA isn't even that sympathetic. I actually found myself actively disliking them.

Also, if real life is applicable, and we're talking purely aesthetics, the WW2 German military. It's the helmets, and the tanks. The colour scheme doesn't hurt either.

Cool evil characters compared to their "good" equivalent... the past "Spy" character in Conker's bad fur day Live and reloaded. Evil (tediz) is a trench-coat inspector looking guy, while the squirrel have a regular looking character.

I think nearly every villain have some kind of mystery around them making them cooler, until they make you hate them a lot (see Seymour in FFX). If I need to name more cool characters, well, Vergil (DMC), not sure of their names but, antagonist in Tales of Symphonia: dawn of the new world, and you're brother in Tales of the abyss. Sure, some games still have less cool villains then the protagonist, who isn't very memorable himself (Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong, I mean, Frankenstein K.Rool is my least favorite of his incarnations)

note: I can't root for the evil side though, not even in Fable, but that stop characters from being cool

When it gives you a choice in games it often is.

Help a kitten out of a tree.

Kill the kitten and throw it at a childs head.

Thats badass.

Pretty sweet being evil in Oblivion, what with all the stealing and assassinating I get to do. Never been caught once, though, so technically im a good guy.
