Well at first I mess around to see what can be done. See what equals what in the game. After that I end up just trying to create a character from scratch. ussually go with female rather then male because it is ussually easier to tell what is what on a girl then a guy. This is a feature that will make me play the game again multiple times if done enough. Tony Hawk Underground I had a good chunk of fun creating then maxing out the character. I know the game wasn't that good, but then again I was enjoying the creating of the character was all.

This is just something I was wondering about. I never give it too much thought when I create a character in a game such as Mass Effect or recently Dragon Age: Origins, but when I do I usually make either the ugliest or goofiest looking character possible, especially in Saints Row 2 ( I finished with a fat guy with a strong Scottish accent wearing bermuda shorts, a tank top, some weird hat and a small pink camo backpack.)

Anyway I guess my question is what do you, the Escapist community, do when you play a game with a character creator, such as Fallout 3, Mass Effect etc, how do you model your character? After yourself, do you try to make the ugliest bastard you can, or do you just simply not put much effort in and just go with a preset character?

And I guess a bonus question could be what was the funniest, ugliest, or most like you character you have created?
How'd you get the accent?
anywho, I just slide all the little sliders to maximum. It normaly produces pritty horrific results...

I try to make the characters resemble me in at least a few ways such as with long hair, matching hair color and eyes, but I get too lazy to detail them so I just apply the most noticeable changes and leave as is.

Usually I prefer to make female characters, so I make somebody that I know. I'm just glad no-one I know has seen my copies of them, it might come off quite strange.

I remember when I made my first Mass Effect character. I attempted to make him a look like a grizzled space arine, and he looked great in the creator. But, when I started the game and saw him from the side, his cheekbones were pulled in so far he looked like a monkey.

In Saints Row 2, I tried doing one after myself, making a goofy one, then I just made an attractive female, but then I got bored of clothes, so I just ran around in her censored glory.

While I usually design a character as close to the concept that I want to play, whether it be a saintly silver haired Joan of Arc type in Dragon Age or a plus sized Rasta QueenPin in Saint's Row 2, I will take up a few save slots with characters with no other purpose than being around for laughs. In Elder Scrolls 4, I've made a male Dunmer look like Hulk villain The Leader (well, as big as I could get his head and as green as I could make his skin. The beard wasn't perfect, either), a Khajit who looked like Cringer from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and a beady cross-eyed bald dwarven noble with a gigantic nose in Dragon Age but none of that ever compares to what can be done with Saint's Row 2 and super skinny guys covered in tatoos wearing nothing but pasties, women's panties and a halo.

It depends on the game, as, if there's a true storyline, then I make it after myself.

If it's like the Sims, i make several of my friends and me while making something to laugh at.

Yeah, I like making "individual" characters...

Unfortunatley, as ZP said, most customisation just chooses the level of grizzliness or the colour stubble

I try to make my character look as badass as possible. Sadly, all of my characters from Soul Calibur 4 look nothing like me :(

Since when did Saints Row 2 have Scottish accents? Was it DLC?

Eh...on the first playthrough I'll try and make myself but after that I go and fuck around on my second.
Like in Saints Row 2 I was a fat ninja that did everything drunk.
