I said it in the last threads and I'll say it now: Give me the hundred days offensive and you've got my money.

'advancing artillery' tactic where the infantry advanced behind the cover of a steadily advancing rain of explosive artillery.
Wasn't the rolling barrage in use since the invention of artillery?

It just seems like such an obvious tactic I can't imagine no-one doing until that battle.

Also, I think the lack of significant American actions in WWI would deter the American customers.
Now that's just stupid. Do you think playing as an american has put down any other country playing any WW2 games?
The difference being that the other countries don't care. It's the norm to play as Americans now, if you take that out of the game, how many Americans will simply ignore it just because it doesn't feature Americans?

I'm sure it'll be an issue for some, like it's an issue to some people to play as Americans, the difference being that we don't have a choice, we have to play as Americans, so we just do. I'm sure that some Americans when given the choice will ignore it on first impressions.

For a while, I liked the sound of a WWI game, but it would probably get boring after a while unless the developers were able to take some historical liberties. Endless trench warfare would be extremely repetitive, and as far as the actual war was concerned, that's basically all it was. If someone were to make a WWI game, they would do well to set it toward the end of the war when tanks and planes became more common, giving itself more to mobile warfare as opposed to trench warfare.

I guess it would be alright if the developers could spice it up a bit beyond endless trenches. Plus, there wouldn't be a whole lot of variety as to the weapons. You'd basically have nothing but pistols and bolt-action rifles, and maybe some less common guns like the Chauchat and the BAR. There were almost no man-portable automatic or semi-automatic weapons (pistols aside) at the time, so everything would be pretty slow-going.

However, despite the criticisms I just laid down, there could be some pretty interesting situations. For example, WWI was one of the first wars in which true sniping saw any action, so the game would practically lend itself to a cool sniping level. Another cool level could be the player and some allies advancing behind the cover of a tank, and the tank would break down, as the tanks of WWI tended to do. The player would then have to stay out in the open and defend the tank until the crew could repair it, as opposed to falling back to a trench, which would allow the enemy to capture the tank.

I'd probably take a look into a WWI game, but I don't expect any developers to try their hands at making one anytime soon.

Im now convinced a WWI game could be interesting.

Seems to me that there are indeed moments where combat in WWI would be interesting, and different from other shooters, if adapted to a game. The downside is that trench warfare is mostly boring. So a WWI game would have to be mostly boring right? Because every video game has to accurately portray a random sampling of real life events? Wrong. You could make a WWI game, and just include the bits that are interesting from a game play perspective. They can take a few creative liberties to, to add a bit of more depth to the play experience. If you think thats wrong, then name a realistic game that takes no liberties. Can't be done. WWI could be a great setting for a game. It would take some work though.

Necrovision, WWI game with vampires, monsters and etcetera. I think it was something along those lines.

Not sure if this has been linked already, but it's a fun WW1 flash game. Probably not what you had in mind, but still.

Rather than reading your long, unspaced wall of text, i'll just say this:
WW2: Hitler
WW1: No Hitler
So basicly WW2 is better for games because it has a more obvious antagonist? Sounds logical to me. Who knows who the big bad guy from WW1 was?

In my opinion, the subject matter doesn't matter so much as the implementation. People keep making TONS of WWII games, sure, but we keep buying them because they all introduce something new. You could make a game about cave mold and it would sell as long as you did something interesting with it.
Personally, I think it would be a great idea. Make a game set in WWI, since no one ever seems to acknowledge that in the gaming world. However, whoever makes it should be able to take some artistic liberties with the war to make it a bit more interesting. It should feel more like a survival-horror game than a run-and-gun deal. Make every moment truly frantic and insane, and make shooting come second to bullet-dodging. This could be a fun game, if you guys would give it a chance.

Exactly! Anything can be entertaining if it's done right. WWI would lend itself well to a strategic shooter, like Rainbow Six without the gadgets. Plus, there's an obvious survival mode, defending your trench from waves of advancing infantry with mounted machine guns, cross-fires, traps...

Because of the trench warfare. It would be difficult to make a good FPS with trench warfare fighting system, or at least i think so.
