French Revolution (1789). The era has everything the game needs: scenery (Paris, the Bastille), intrigue, interesting historical figures (a young Napoleon, Marat, Marie Antoinette), sex (the decadent French court), wigs, plus Ubisoft Montreal would be bringing the series home to the French-speaking world. Just do it, Ubisoft, you know you want to!

It would make the most sense to set it in the present day, thats where the plot seems to be going from Assasins Creed 2 (I'm not far from completing it). However, Desmond doesn't come across as a very interesting character, so they should either expand on his character or perhaps kill him off for the sake of a good plot twist.

Ideally though, i would'nt mind seeing the French revoluton (altough this risks being rather damn similar to AC 2)
So i would suggest that setting it in Industrial England would be a better alternative, you could make a great steam-punk-esque atmosphere. But perhaps a more orginal idea would be setting it in Ancient Rome. How about assasinating tyrannical Roman Emperors and fighting the Pretorian Guard? The problem with Industrial England is that its a bit too...stable. Victorian coppers where only armed with a truncheon, a whistle, and a notebook. Not muskets and swords. It would seem rarther "unsporting" to slice through the neck of a British bobby with the hidden blade.

The problem with setting Assasins Creed in a non-western setting is that you would need to create a new character from which the player plays as, because Desmond could not have had a Chinese ancestor. You can get away with Altair considering the interaction between Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages, but contact between Europe and the Orient? It would not work unless you create a new character who has East Asian ancestory.

The last interview I read said it can go anyway but it probably won't be Desmond's time.

I'm hoping it's more recent than AC2. Regardless I think the main character should be female, since we've seen that there are female assassins and Desmond obviously has female ancestors.

They'll slowly get to the future by something like Assassin's Creed 6 on the next XBox. They'll probably go to either Revolutionary America, Civil War America, WW1, WW2, or the modern war before making it to the future. By the time they get to the future I hope they don't call it Assassin's Creed. Instead something like, Assassin's Future, or Assassin's Time, or Thief IV or something.

19th century London

You are going after the Freemasons (or you are one), Jack the Ripper is the main bad guy and YOU are Spring Heeled Jack!

Do it Ubisoft! DO IT!

Stone age. The assassin would have duel hidden clubs.

On a slightly less OMGLOL level I'd say it's should be half set in the present day and half set in the past. Seriously, it's about the only advantage I can see to the whole "It's all a simulation" plot line, an yet they STILL haven't taken advantage of it.

If it was set all in the present day it's just become another Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid clone. Assassins Creed is one of the few games I can call a "period piece" for a better phrase, and it's one of the games greatest strengths. To take that away would be insane. So, simply have Desmond do the whole animus thing (judging by what happened in AC2 I'm starting to think he won't need the animus anymore) then every now again he'll be jerked out of it in order to deal with what's happening in the present day.

As for history setting itself, I say WW1 or WW2 germany where you play as some sort of resistance to repression OR Victorian England in which you play as an Assassin with a sherlock homes sort of twist. Ubisoft have set they wish to set the game in World War 2 which, if done right, could be great. If done wrong...well we've battled enough fucking nazi's to be honest. Victorian England presents a rather more detective esc story.

Of coarse there's no reason we can't go BACK in time rather than forward. There's no restriction on the animus saying that can't happen, and they don't nessarily need to go further towards the present in order to continue the story. As anyone who's completed the game knows there were a lot of refrences to even more ancient time near the end (I'm meaning the bit before Desmond says "What the fuck?") It could well be set in ancient egypt or something. The Assassins Creed itself may not actually go back that far, but there's no reason the Assassins of Medival times couldn't have learnt their skills from ancient texts of a time far gone.

They resently found a builder in Bristol who's a distant desendent of Genghis Khan.

If we go back far enough, it could happen.

as some people have said...Japan...that'd be sweet
ninjas and samurai? =]

but if that's not "forward" enough on the timeline of things, WWI could be cool (since people are like nooo about WWII haha)

Even though I think that there are good designers out there that could pull off a good future Assasins Creed, I don't think Ubisoft has the talent for it.
Still, the next one should take place in an more modern place. (Japan maybe?)

Set it in 19th century Whitechapel, just so we can have the new assassin go up against Jack the Ripper

There's already been like 500 million topics on this, so let me tell you how this is going to go:

All the OTAKU (As far as I can tell from my observation of this group, the name is an acronym for Overweight Tedious Ass Kissing Unwashed) are going to say "Li3k ZOMG watashi no wantz it in JAPAN so we can have NINJAZ!!!11!1 Baka lol!!11!"

All the WWII-philes are going to say "Wait a minute, there was HISTORY before 1939?!?!?" Before going to masturbate to a picture of Hitler being attacked by Boba Fett.

A few people will come up with less trite locations and more inventive concepts, but these will be largely glanced over or forgotten within the hour in a best-case senario.
