Personally I have had it in my mind for a while that a GTA set in prohibition era Chicago would do pretty well. And If you think about it given the gta driving physics at least the cars would drive accurately for once.

If your hell fire bent on making it more modern set it in three areas of England, Ireland and Scotland. Just the level of factions involved would fit perfectly into GTA although England s No gun thing might make it a little confusing, so perhaps make England the starter area and keep weapons relegated to bats, shivs and other melee weapons with the end chapter being Ireland and likely getting tied up with an IRA-esque organization.

Or for comedy factor you set it in Montreal and rename it Grand theft Moose and all the dialogue quests result in pleasant debates over afternoon tea. (I kid, I kid)

How about an Asian setting, but not the more common Japan or China. Perhaps Thailand or Cambodia.

If it must be in the US perhaps Baltimore (Cmon with nicknames like Mobtown and Murderland how is that not perfect?) or Boston. Perhaps it could be done in a non urban area and focus on say Hillbilly heroine and the Pillbillies in eastern ky and the shiners in WV.

There are so many locales that present alot of potential. Picking a good one will not be difficult. What I think is infinitely more important to the franchise is actually expanding on the gameplay because there really has not been a lot of innovation in the franchise recently. Gameplay wise weve seen the same basic mechanics in GTA3, Vice city, SA, GTA4 + its expansions So it would be nice to see the game done in a much less repetitive style.
Some good ideas, although i think its too soon since mafia II for it to be set during the prohibition. My vote still goes for an african setting.

New Orleans would be pretty cool. Killing random pedestrians is fun and all, but imagine mowing down alligators out in the bayou as a little break from all that city killin'.
Sigh. We don't have alligators, and I don't take an air boat to school...
New Orleans is no different than Detroit. It just has prettier buildings and is 6 feet below sea level all the time. It's just a run down poor city with an aging and fleeting population since Hurricane Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Gustav.

Alligator hunting is done in the Bayou Lafourche area around Thibodeaux and Houma and closer to the Gulf of Mexico.

Fuck you History Channel for making us all seem like ignorant coon asses.

Basically this:
In game form. Think about it, it'd be awesome.

Yes they already made a London one, but that's ancient. We need one with GTA4-quality visuals to get the humour across, and if anyone can make such amazing characters as in Lock, Stock, it's Rockstar.

Warsaw, where some random npc are stealing your car...

I think Moscow (today) and Berlin (pre 90's for some interesting story elements) could make decent settings for GTA.

Any place the people drive on the left side of the road. As most games that allow you to drive on the road are based in America (or a replica of America), driving on the left in a video game would be weird as well as fun.

For me, at least.

I think it would have to be set somewhere in America, since the GTA games are an outsider's parody of America and setting them in any other country would change the core game too much.

I doubt any city in Britain (or even much of Europe) would work very well since the roads are too narrow and the town layouts don't lend themselves well to a GTA style game (not since the franchise became 3D from GTA III onwards).

To remain true to the gameplay, it would have to be set in a country where both the populace and law enforcement are armed all the time, you need armed NPC's that pursue you as a consequence of committing crimes, but having every policeman and most civilians draw a side-arm and shoot at you in a game set in London would make it not seem like London any more, more so if the roads were widened to allow high speed pursuits.

Rockstar could and are perfectly capable of making another open world game set in another locale, as witnessed with Red Dead Redemption and the upcoming L.A. Noire, but the Grand Theft Auto series should remain in America, or to be accurate it's America lampooning universe.

GTA in space!

You can steal comets, have sex with alien prostitutes on them, and then get chased through the galaxy by the intergalactic space cops while shooting them with your hypernuclear dildo launcher!

Bucharest, Romania. There are enough criminal organizations here to make 3 GTAs...Also an undercover cop out on a revenge quest on one of the fore-mentioned organizations would seem a nice change from the all-out crime-spree protagonists GTA had so far. Also, some moral choices to actually affect everything would be welcome (I know, GTA4 had a bit of this but it was too little).
This is how I think the next GTA should be.
