I too, hope Lightning doesn't turn out to be another stereotypical bad ass action hero with boobs. But after FFXII? I'm not sure FFXIII is gonna be all that good. Since androgynus, whiny *****, blond males are usually the norm with square leads, one can almost predict that we're going to get the polar opposite in Lightning.
fixed.

It's fuckin' unnerving how true this is. Then again, I've been over the series since X. I have zero hope for anything they churn out.

Samas Aran is the greatest female lead character in the history of video games.

Of the games I have played my voted go to:

Samus Aran, reasons have already been mentioned so I feel no need to reitterate.

Terra Brandford and Celes chere for FF6. Both characters just felt real in a way, they were strong protagonists that still felt weak at times with them confused about their very natures and what not. A good female character in my eyes has to still show weakness but a willingness to persevere even in the midst of their own confusion and those two nailed it.

Jeanne from Jeanna D'arc. Yes we all know the story of this french heroine, but the game really gave her an admirable personality. Again she reminded me of Terra or Celes, being brave but still having that weakness to them that kept them rather human and not some sort of super hero.

You know the sad part is, Squall is one of my favorite male FF leads. He's cold, distant and kind of an ass. Then...

Rinoa shows up and he turns into a whiny *****. Personally, I thought Quistis was a lot hotter then her, and a lot less annoying.

But I'm getting off topic here, so feel free to ignore these comments.
Hah, I have the exact same sentiments. The whole romance plot fell apart 'cause of her. Actually, a lot of plot elements didn't work for me, but eh. It's a decent installment.

Zoey, if that counts, because shes not the steroetypical game-girl, you know what im talking about, the one where the boob meter is slid up all the way and she thinks ideas are "scary"

Eh...this FF game having the best lead female? Uh...no. Samus easily is better, and the game is not out yet so you have little to go on. Simply being a FF game does not put the character above others. That girl from FFX-2 certainly was annoying, and SHE was a female FF lead character. I am pro-samus on this, but I am very much anti-any FF character especcially ones that are not even out yet.

Because you can opt to not be a big-titted, barely-dressed, empty-headed 20-something.
I did play as a girl who kicked ass...but then again...The lead character is as you make them...

But as for the best lead female player character with a pre-set personality?
I'd have to say that Faith from Mirror's Edge was great. She cared for her friends and family. She kicked ass. She was down-to-earth when she wasn't high above the ground on rooftops...well, minus the way her eyes could magically make stuff turn red to show the way.

April Ryan from The Longest Journey and Dreamfall.

She is an overall great character with a marvelous voice actor. Coupled with the fact that the world(s) she inhabits is(are) far more interesting than many others videogame worlds. That and her best friend is a talking crow named Crow.

Does Celes Chere from FF6 count as a lead character? She is la grande fromage for the World of Ruin part of the game, and she's the one leading the effort to re-unite the team for the final battle with Kefka. She and Sabin are basically the Blues Brothers, "we're gettin' the band back together!" drivers of the plot.

Samus from Metroid because... Well, She just is. Plus she has a large energy cannon strapped to her arm, which is always a plus.
