Any RPG because you get to create your own character like Fallout 3, Oblivion, Mass Effect, and so on. But the best female lead character that is set for you would have to be Faith in mirrors edge. True zero punctuation rated this game as shit but, do I dare slander his magnificence, he is dead wrong. She is awesome and so is the game. If you disagree with me you better have played the game, instead of just being a sheep that goes with what others say.

Mass Effect.
Because you can opt to not be a big-titted, barely-dressed, empty-headed 20-something.
damn right. i agree

(reapers unite!)
haha, that last remark is cheesy but awesome at the same time. you need some sort of joint battle cry.

also, i don't think gender matters. for best, well, faith did a pretty good job. i haven't really seen others lately (i don't count mass effect since it's variable choice).

Not alot of games use female characters respectivly, as in human beings. Anything a male lead can do a female lead can do too. I am looking forward to Heavy Rain, wich seems like a game that is going to be more Beyond Good and Evil and less Lora Croft. Many games use women to add leverge to the old saying "Sex sells", but I think that when Orhiwalala (I am not going to look up the name of the game at 3:00 AM) Bikini Ninja Squad or whatever sells extremly poorly because people read reviews and are told how terriable this game is then people will start to stray away from the old archtypes for woman in games. And you know its getting bad when not only does a man point this all out, but is tired if it all. Ok, their almost naked, whoopee! Lets get over it now.

and the game is poorer for it.

I so want to be a big-titted, barely-dressed, empty-headed 20-something.
I prefer my girls small breasted, well-dressed, and with a head full of brainy things. I am just a freak I guess.

Why would you want to do that? :D
See above!
Also: I live in Florida. I can walk outside and see fifty girls with breasts bigger than watermelons, hair bleached to a freakish white-blonde, bad tans, and empty heads.
And every time I do, I am filled with disgust and murderous rage.
Well not really, but ew.
You, my good sir, are a genius.
I appreciate that (or rather, my ego does,) but even if I thought fake blondes were the hottest thing since sliced bread, it's like eating pizza every single day for ten years.
Eventually? You'll throw up at the sight of it. And I never liked the stereotype or the people who acted it, so you can imagine my reaction (it invovlves chainsaws and wild dogs.)
It seems we are the only sane ones left.
I take offense to that Sir. For that would make me sane...and until now I thought myself insane and liked it that way...

As for the topic I gotta say my favorite is either Samus Aran or Jayde(from BG&E), though Faithe from Mirror's Edge as good too.

That being said I will say that while I've never liked Lara Croft, I will say that she is correctly attired for her primary job of Tomb Raider. If you're dodging trap and enchanted statues who mean tot kill you I'd wear short shorts and a tank top too...and that's not a pretty sight.

I would say Samus from Metroid but as she's a robot in a suit so it could really be either sex.
Number One: Samus is HUMAN and shes wearing a suit of armor. Numbskull.

Jill Valentine from Resident Evil, probably my first encounter but she's also kinda masculine because she's a soldier.
Jill is a Police Officer. Not a soldier.

Jill Valentine from Resident Evil, probably my first encounter but she's also kinda masculine because she's a member of the Special Tactics and Rescue Squad.

Fixed.

A tie between Samus Aran, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil (I want to play that game again dammit!) the chick from Portal and Alyx Vance from HL2. Faith from Mirror's Edge is pretty cool as well, but I never played that game. It's nice to see girls nót being sexploited in games, and all the names above are shining examples of that. Although it's true that poor Samus had a little...twitch, sadly.

High five my friend! The current Hollywood "beauty" standard disgusts me, fake boobs are ew.

I would say Lara Croft from Tomb Raider--the original iteration, not the cuddly, sexed up newer one. (I cringe every time I see this "new" Lara dressed to please the pocket pool crowd.)

I also like Heather from Silent Hill very much. I thought she was a very true to life representation of a teenager.

And of course, Jade from BG&E.

I haven't played Metroid, but there's something about being tricked into liking a character. No one knew she was female until the end of the game (a choice rumored to be solely for shock value, not because of any real characterization of Samus as a woman.) So she may be female and your fave, but it's seems like she's your fave in spite of being a woman, not because she's a woman.

Ok, in your opinion which game has the best female lead character? I'm thinking more in respect to how the are portrayed / How they make the game different to those that have a Male main character.
Go discuss =]
The best main character has got to be Faith from Mirrors Edge. Her free running abilities are awesome.

I've just thought actually, all of the generic enemies are men! Ah well, it's acceptable to beat the crap out of a man, right?

By having a female lead it becomes an issue. It really shouldn't be. I think this is why we so rarely see female protagonists in games.

Academically speaking the augmentation Samus suit provides is very extensive, making her a cyborg, not a robot or a normal human. This is different to the Borg for example but still stands.

Also she is the best female character, because of her no-nonsense approach.

Actually Ayame in Tenchu Stealth Assassins was cool (PlayStation).

The fact that bosses treated you differently when you played as a woman was a stroke of genius and showed insight into the culture.

One boss would kill himself to keep his honour if you played as Rikimaru (Male) but would fight if you played as Ayame because he would not surrender to a woman.
