I'd say Alien Swarm... but come on, it was free, which also eliminates Duty Calls, so I'm going to say JUST CAUSE 2. Don't get me wrong, this is a 4 and a half star game, but the story is terrible, costing it that half star.

Fable, hands down.
Not necessarily for out-right badness, but just the fact that it reads like a checklist for every overused fantasy RPG cliche there is.
Young child suffers family-slaughtering trauma? Check.
Child possesses inherited super-human awesomeness? Check.
The Big Bad is a creepy dude in a mask? Check.
Blah Blah Blah, hoh hee hoh? Check.
It's not even bad enough to get a cheap guffaw out of. The tidal wave of mediocrity just washes in from the first moment and you end up treading bland water whilst also trying to get the stupid fucking target system to target the asshole I want to throw lightning at, no not the merchant I'm escorting, the Fucking Band - oh screw it.
And yet, I still play the damned thing just for the chance to murder hundreds upon hundreds of my fellow man.

Anyone that says the CoD games clearly has no idea about anything. "Capture the objectives" is all the story you'll ever need.
Ramirez, Do Everything!
Ha! I agree.
In the terms of modern warfare 2, It doesn't have much of a real good story. instead it just expects you to shot guys, move on, shot some more guys, hold out for a bit, move on again then get killed.

And duchacked, i literally laughed out loud when you reminded me of that.

Custer's Revenge. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custer%27s_Revenge]

4 pages, and nobody has mentioned it yet? Seriously escapists, is our memory so shallow?

Halo isn't that bad, CoD isn't that bad, cliched crap isn't that bad, JRPG games aren't convoluted enough to be that bad.

I mean, the only game I can think of that might be on that level is Rapelay.

When finished, Borderlands.

While playing, all Halo games past CE.
... the story was one of the best parts of the halo series imo, the only thing that killed it for me was the length of the games

Porn games are cheating. That's like bringing up Uwe Boll or Martin Lawrence-in-a-fat-suit movies up in "worst movie" discussions; well of course those are terrible!
Agreed, but rape games are far worse than games about pornography. I didn't mention Leisure Suit Larry or some such, because games about sex, have their story driven around... well sex. That's not necessarily a "bad" thing.

Games based on rape, though are different, and Custer's Revenge is also horribly racist. I mean, you wouldn't say that any sex game is as bad a game as that would you? I'm trying to dredge the worst of the worst.

No ok seriously, Modern Warfare 2. I usually don't have problems following game stories, but that one was incomprehensible and stupid.

Damn. How could I forget the pinnacle of terrible game storytelling, Half-Life 2? It was so bad people had to create massive web sites to make up the story. Not fanfiction mind you, but the actual story.

*holds the riot shield tight*
I'm seriously hoping that was sarcasm.

As for the timeline of Homefront (a game in which I've no particular interest), it doesn't sound that idiotic to me. I mean, sure, it's not all that believable, but so's most of human history anyway.

You want a similar but utterly baffling scenario? Try the Red Alert series. Awesome games (first two anyway), but the story's ludicrous.
In the first, Stalin grows super-powerful and invades Europe, because Albert Einstein travelled back in time and removed Hitler.
And then in the second, psychic devices shut down US defenses, and a fleet of red zeppelins and DOLPHINS invade.

Jolly good fun, but it wouldn't make a very good novel. No wait, hang on...

See, if Homefront's premise had involved time travel and goofy dolphin armies, then "Greater North Korea" wouldn't be an issue; there's no pretense being made at realim when your setting and major plot points are cartoony and supernatural. It's their attempt to play it as a realistic near-future scenario that makes it so absurd.
Yes, well. I really don't want to partake too much in this discussion, but you do make a very good point here.

Pretty much most of the recent Sonic games like Sonic 06, ShTH, etc.

Also, who plays Mario for the stories anyway? Those games are heaps of fun nonetheless.

The Great Gatsby, for the NES. I played that game believing that the plot was true to the book. I went on to read the book, and was SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED. I couldn't even finish, such was the depth of my despair!
They made a Great Gatsby video game? How is that possible?! Is it a first person shooter from the view of Mr Wilson? I cannot wrap my mind around that.
You walk around throwing hats at waiters, drunkard, bouncing clowns, and weird dancing people. You also fight a giant pair of glasses on a train. Here, try it for yourself: http://greatgatsbygame.com/

Fallout 3, hands-down. When you sit back and think about what you just played through, you run a very real risk of stupidity-induced heart explosion. Honorable mention goes the Red Alert 3, but I don't know if that counts since it's deliberately stupid.
