Final Fantasy isn't going down hill. The series thrives on reinventing itself every release, so people who liked the old ones probably don't like the new ones and come to the conclusion that it's going down hill. Lots of people who never played a FF before adore 13, and lots of people who never played a FF before 7 says it's the best, same with 10, and every other FF out there.
I can definitely see the reasoning to your argument, but to me -a relative newcomer to FF- I was sorely disappointed with XIII. Seven months ago, i started playing the series with VII, then VI, then IV, then VIII, and finally X, so I understand the whole reinvention thing. While XIII, which I eventually got around to, did reinvent the combat, that doesn't excuse it from being done poorly. On top of that, there are problems outside the combat, such as linearity, dialogue-saturated cut-scenes, etc. I'm not going to spout the same arguments you've probably already heard regarding combat, but I just wanted to give some input, because you make a good, albeit somewhat invalid point. BTW, my faves were 7, 6, and 8.
OT: That being said, my main pick is Final Fantasy. Big shock. Next would be Jak and Daxter. C'mon ND, make a real Jak and Daxter sequel!
