I'm still looking for one that I can look at and say "Yep, that's a work of art".

Myst and Syberia have some nice set pieces, but at the end of the day, they're puzzles with shiny wrapping paper and atmospheric sounds.

De we REALLY need to focus our attention on something as meaningless as a "classification"? Stop listening to Roger Ebert. Who cares?!

For the hell of it, My Dragon Age: Origins experience. My god, what a game, truly a work of art, a masterpeice.

You can take basically any screenshot and call it a work of art; the art direction is among the best I've ever seen in a videogame.
totally agree.... also Braid and Mirror's Edge are prime examples.

Again? Someone is late to the party.

OT: Any game with a effective emotional response from the player is art to me.
It's not that I'm late to the party, if anything I'm the party pooper. Why make a fuss? Would it be any different? If they were art.

But your OT response is the legitimate definition of "art". Would anyone like to argue/debate that cyber athletes are "real athletes"?

Wind Waker, Mario Galaxy, Killer7, and Eternal Darkness are four games I've played that I consider, in their own way, to be art.

Wind Waker has that beautiful, influential art style that was unique at the time, Mario Galaxy expertly constructs then deconstructs the perfect platformer with ease, Killer7... speaks for itself, and is as polarising as any piece of modern art anyway, and Eternal Darkness tells the best story I've experienced in gaming, with the narrative woven seamlessly in with the gameplay. I couldn't think of a 5th game that I've played that I would put forward to a sceptic to prove that gaming is a serious form of art.

I haven't really played that one, but, from what I've seen, Mafia: City of Lost Heaven qualifies perfectly.
Also, Heavy Rain (most definitely) and, I kid you not, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Both get "fucking great narrative" and "wonderful athmosphere" points.

most games that may give you the impression of being art are just, well, pretentious pieces of shit that look unique.
Kinda sums up a lot of art really

What a ridiculous question, pretty much every game aims to be aesthetically pleasing. Every game tries to invoke some sort of emotion or response in their player. Every game is art.

I guess it depends how you define art. Some people consider stories as a work of art. Which then I'd have to put Silent Hill 2 down as an example of art, just because of how well done the story and environment is done.

Fragile. Without a doubt one of my favorite games of all time. As a game goes, it's above average, though not stellar by any means, but its unique, the story is incredible, and the art style is some of the best i've seen on a wii game.

The only complaint i have, apart from there being far less memory items than there really should have been, is when crow died. WHY DID HE DIE? I MEAN I GET THE MESSAGE IT SENDS BUT I LIKED HIM! I actually had a hard time finishing the game after that. It doesn't help that you start having to fight crow dolls, with his voice, right after he dies. The intro theme song, Hikari, was a great one to listen to, but without a doubt, the ending theme, Tsuki no Nukumori is one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. This game is worth every penny spent on it, in my opinion. But that's just me.

This is also the closest thing i've ever been able to play to a horror game without throwing my controller skyward and screaming every 5 minutes. Though i came pretty close the first time i encountered the eye-woman ghost, mostly because i had mistaken it for the kid-leg ghost, because the crying sounded somewhat like the laughter the legs give off, or at least it did at the time(being night when i should have been in bed).
