This is a subject which came up in discussion earlier today amongst me and some of my fellow nerds. There are plenty of excellent game designers, and indeed plenty of excellent games...

Some excellent games are the result of trial and error leading to a perfect product, or simply the evolution and reworking of previous successes that simply could have been done better.

But then there are certain games which you know are Exactly the same as most previous titles with maybe one or two aesthetic improvements, but which you happily shell out for simply because it will be Exactly the same game with maybe one or two aesthetic improvements!

For an example, Worms. It is my fondly held belief that Worms hasn't changed in generations - primarily because you cannot improve on perfection, and they have already perfected their design. The most significant changes you'll find on a base level with any new Worms game is purely in the graphical department, and perhaps some fine tuning of existing weapons.

On the other hand, if Worms isn't your kettle of fish, you could turn that exact argument against it, and claim that because it hasn't changed, then any new instalment must be utter tripe. Perhaps therefore you're more of a Halo player, and would like to present an argument on why Halo 3 is essentially Halo 1 with a vastly superior graphics engine and a few extra weapons.

Even Starcraft 2 had its fair share of players divided over the fact that many believed it was just the same game with shinier graphics, whilst others claimed that this was the very reason it would work!

So... what are your thoughts?

Which game-series do You think achieved personal perfection?

(To Clarify in simpler terms, which company has been releasing what is essentially the same game over and over without any real complaints from their fan-base?)

The formula for a 3D zelda game has been pretty constant since 1998 but I'd buy a new one in a second. In fact, I'd probably sell one of my lesser important organs for it if I had to.

There is no such thing as perfection. Graphics can always be better, levels better, controls better, content better, dialogue better. Nothing can ever reach a perfect state. Something can always be better, and that will always be the case.

In my opinion ratchet and clank is perfect...
I've loved every single game.
It has the perfect mix of graphics, fun, awesome weapons and story!

I wasn't necessarily implying they've created a 'Perfect'-Perfect game - but rather a formula that is damn-near perfection to the point where any change of significance would only make it Worse.

Returning to the example of worms, Worms 3D was an absolute failure simply because it was a major change that Didn't improve the series - it detracted from what people enjoyed previously. So now they essentially release the same game over and over, with the only major changes being aesthetic things like Hats and newer, shinier graphics.

Aye, but have there been any significant changes in game-play over that time? Or has it essentially been the same game? I admit I'm a stranger to the Rachet-and Clank series, but as I understand it they're 3-D platforming games similar to Mario 64 yes?

The closest games to perfection for me personally would be Red Dead Redemption, the Prince of Persia Sands of Time series and (I know I am fairly alone on this one) the Assassin's Creed games. The world and story immersion is done so brilliantly in those three series that I just can't help but enjoy myself while playing them.

Now there's Perfection (Well okay, maybe better graphics, but it's very close)
HA! I'm not sure why, but watching that made me smile and chuckle more heartily than I have all week, thanks for posting it!

It's basicly an 3rd shooter/platformer
They never change drasticly, but they do add new things every time.
Also, I have never replayed a game more than ratchet and clank 2.
"You beat the game, want some more awesome weapons? play again!"
"You beat the game again, want even MORE weapons?"

I totally agree with you on Assassin's Creed - they're brilliant games... And the Prince of Persia series is certainly splendid too -

But they can't really be said to just be the same game with graphical upgrades. Elements of game-play were heavily changed in some of them, Prince of Persia for example went through some rather hectic changes - brilliant though the series is.

Assassin's Creed even altered quite a few elements of its game-play for the second go - not that this is bad mind you! But they haven't yet reached the point where they're releasing the same game over and over again with a different skirt, and not upsetting their fan-base one jot!

Well I'll have to take your word for it :)

I never owned the right platform to get into that particular fandom, which is fairly sad. The closest thing I had was Banjo-Kazooie, which is sadly disqualified from this particular thread simply because of the existence of Nuts and Bolts, which is about as far from the original games as you can possibly get.

Sounds like a law-suit waiting to happen. Having said that, I'll totally buy it and give it a shot when you make it!

I've been a nintendo-boy for most of the earlier part of my life, then I switched over and became a PC lad - and have remained so ever since. But I do frequently play my mate's XBox whenever we have a party night, and I thoroughly enjoy it.

I do rather think a tip of the hat must been made to Mortal Kombat... Correct me if I'm wrong, but until they released that 'adventure style' game, it was mostly the same thing with new characters and a token 3-D arena.

I'm still pissed at the one Ratchet and Clank for making my awesome volcano gun into a terrible molten rock launcher. I think it was Going Commando that did that...

Pokemon. Same game. Over and over. Am I going to stop buying them or playing them? No.
