-Master Chief- All of his fellow Spartans, who were like his brothers and sisters, most of them died on Reach. That's gotta be a suckerpunch right there, and at some point the other Spartans die too. So.....sucks for him.

-Altair- He was basically the second in command of the Assassins and through one poor choice, he lost it all, then finds out that his leader is a psychopath, bent on ruling the Holy Land.
-Left 4 Dead People- This doesn't need to be explained. Being vomited on by a person is one thing, but by a fat zombie whose puke makes other zombies come to you? Along with being strangled, mauled, crushed, and flipped out on. (Boomer,Smoker,Hunter,Tank,Witch)

-Main Character from Bioshock- His plane crashes in the Atlantic, Pacific, wherever. He gets down into Rapture, goes through hell working for Atlas, then for a...disturbed...artist.....person. Then when you finally take down the *bad guy*, you find out that you are being mind controlled. Then you have to kill the guy who was *helping* you. Oh, and while you're doing this, you're fighting off sentry bots, machine gun toting nutjobs, splicers, and Big Daddys. And the only ending worth getting is too much trouble for, since you don't get enough Adam to get every upgrade at the gathering garden.

The main guy from Bioshock. He's traveling on a plane to... somewhere when it crashes in the middle of the ocean, and he is forced to fight hundreds of mutated humans to help someone he doesn't even know take control of a city he has little stake in. Then he figures out his entire life was a lie and he's been helping a criminal the whole time.
the main guy from nfs - most wanted. he loses his car in a race (someone cut his brakes) and he gets beaten up by the police chick. and arrested.
I'd say James from Silent Hill 2. He just expected to find his dead wife alive. The next thing you know, some dude with a pyramid head and a giant knife runs after him. And if that ain't enough, the guy goes to a "somewhat" purgatory.
I'd also say Raiden from the Metal Gear series. His whole life been stolen from him. He becomes some robot ninja. On top of that, no metal gear fans likes him.

your character in fallout 3. Your dad disappears from the vault, the safe little hovel you live in after the apocalypse, and a riot starts that ends in you escaping (after possibly killing some of the few people you know because they are trying to kill you) and being cut off from all your acquaintances and stranded in an radioactive wasteland where everything is either an irradiated monstrosity that wants you dead or a total jerk that also wants you dead, with only a few friendly people left in the entire world.

Jack from BioShock - The sole survivor of a plane crash, gets stuck in and caught up with all kinds of sick and nasty shit, and it turns out nothing is at it seems at all (trying to not spoil it here folks.)
Gordon Freeman from the Half Life series - He's only a theoretical physicist, and everyone expects him to save the entire world all the time. Everyone is always essentially up his ass and he's always thrown into places/situations/etc. that no one else would touch with a 39 1/2 foot pole. And then there's that creepy old guy that's always dicking around with him. Also, he wears glasses.
The Sparrow from Fable 2 - He/she is eight and is stuck living in a few planks of wood on the streets in the middle of winter. Then some stuck up fuck decided to screw with him/her and his/her sister by bringing them over to his grand castle, so that he can kill his/her sister in cold blood in front of him/her and then shoot & throw him/her right out of the castle. Then 20 years later, he kills your dog and your family (if you bother to have one.).

Zack Fair. One of his role models (Sephiroth) goes batshit insane and kills an entire town and almost one of his friends (Cloud and Tifa). One of his other best friends (Angeal) transforms into a raging monster which in turn forces Zack to kill his best friend. He's used as a lab rat for for 5 years, escapes, is hunted down and is eventually killed.
Now that's rough...killing your best friend and seeing everyone else s lives go to hell.
