Who do you Save?

The librarian and his wife, the famous historian, the medical student, the biochemist, and myself.

The librarian because he must have some knowledge of books.
His wife because, well, she's pregnant. And his wife. It'd be the only way to get him to co-operate.
The famous historian because of knowledge of the past. We'd have to cling to at least some of that.
The medical student to deliver the baby/keep people alive should anything go wrong.
The biochemist to help fix whatever damage the radiation did.
And myself because... Well, I imagine being a government leader would mean I'd have to stay alive to pick up the pieces.

Unless, of course, you mean six people plus me. In which case, the renowned female starlet.
Because otherwise the only females would be the librarian's wife and (possibly) the child.
Which is kinda squicky, in my opinion.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, the medical student and biochemist might be female.
Damn. Why didn't that occur to me?
Forget the starlet, then. The police officer, assuming he/she is competant.
To teach us self-defence and protect us should the need arise.

3) They would produce strong offspring which would help the new race to survive
5) Probably attractive so she would be good to breed with and produce attractive offspring, also they have skills to attract the opposite sex

I would leave the rabbi, the elderly historian, the Olympic athlete, and the female starlet, to die. The others I'd save. My reasoning?

1) A male Librarian

3) An Olympic male Athlete (for arguments sake, of all sports)
4) An elderly male, famous historian
5) A renowned female starlet (dancer, actress, singer, songwriter, etc)
6) A college co-ed
7) A second year medical student
8) A police officer
9) A rabbi
10)A biochemist

1 survives because a librarian will be useful with their organisational skills in rebuilding the new world. 2 survives because I can't leave a pregnant person to die, since they will be vital in helping rebuild the human race. 6 will live because a college co-ed will be educated, obviously, so they'll be useful in bringing their knowledge into the new world. I'll save 7 because we'll need doctors, obviously, and 8 survives because we'll need someone to keep the peace and prevent the complete collapse of law and order. 10 will be the last to live, because a biochemist will also have useful skills for the new world.

3 will die because what use is an Olympic athlete in rebuilding the world after a nuclear apocalypse? Likewise for 4, a historian knows about the past but that won't matter when we're trying to rebuild the future. 5 will be useless, why would we want to save someone famous when they don't necessarily have any real skills useful in rebuilding the world? And the rabbi, number 9, will go because quite frankly, religion will be useless in the new world (and I say this as a Christian, yet my answer would remain the same even for a bishop or even the Pope).

So you need to be a Pregnant med student who's married to a librarian to optimize your chance of survival!

Well the Librarians wife is clearly fertile (good for repopulation), so she's in. Might as well have the Librarian too. The medical student and biochemist would be useful, they have decent knowledge. Let's also have the starlet and the co-ed, so we have more than the librarian's wife as a breeder.
The historian I feel slightly guilty about leaving because knowledge of the past could be useful to prevent such a disaster happening again. But on the other hand he is old, so not much practical use.
Likewise the athlete (who'd make a great hunter of food) and the police officer (possible leader material, and can definitely keep order to stop everyone killing themselves)
The rabbi I have no qualms about sacrificing. Religion has no place in my new world order, especially not a monotheistic one, it just causes trouble

These are the people I'd definitely save (assuming there are enough females in this group, you didn't specify all their genders).
The other two spots are open to a small lottery.

For the sake of fairness there must be an equal balance of male and female. Although less men are required to populate the Earth, we do need a diverse genetic pool or we will be inbred within 1 generation. Secondly we need to preserve as many as possible with knowledge skills to try and restore any surviving scientific systems. Therefore I choose -

This provides required skill sets and a reasonably fair balance of genetics.

He is old and his skills whilst useful are not enough to secure him a place.

9) A rabbi

Personally I'd leave all religious types outside simply because if we have a chance to start over I don't want religion cocking it up. Plus he doesn't have any useful skills.

8) A police officer

Whilst security is an important factor, we do not required a dedicated agent for this.

6) A college co-ed

This student is not stated as having any useful skills. I assume the best they have at their disposal is some form of English qualification, which is not of any use.

I'd kill off the Rabbi and Librarian (religion is a waste of time often leading to bad things, and the Librarian is the easiest to replace), then use them as extra food to support the survival of the other 8.

If that is not a feasible option, i'd choose to let the Starlet and Athlete die too, as none of them would support basic society, and the historian's knowlegde cannot be replaced in/by the future.
