John Steed or Emma Peel. None of this substandard Yankee rubbish with super powers, defeating evil with just an umbrella now thats cool.

Iron Man is as cool as a robot, as cool as a billionaire, and as cool as a rampaging alcoholic.

I'd say this one is pretty straightforward.
Anyways, your turn Escapists!
Thor.

Because he's a god.

Better, because he's a pagan god. I approve of movies about pagan gods - I'd like to see more of Thor's quality. ^^
Well, technically no, he isn't =) He's actually just a humanoid alien. I say just. He's a humanoid alien with superhuman strength and a super advanced magic hammer that allows him to fly and summon lightening =D

Um, Director Fury?

IIRC, in the whole movie, he never has any of those godawful attempts at comedy.

And he spends a lot of his time telling the super powered tossers he works with to quit asking questions about SHIELD, and go save the world. Or to quit fighting each other and go save the world. Or to quit whining and go save the world. Or to stop whatever stupid bullshit they are doing and go fucking save the fucking world.
I think the "whining" you refer to is quite a vital part of the film. It's not just supposed to be about them banding to together to beat Loki, it's about them over coming their differences to combat a greater evil. Even Fury isn't at fault. He was trying to build superweapons. The arguments demonstrate that at heart, they aren't heroes. They're just people, who all want different things.

And really? "Godawful attempts at comedy"? SERIOUSLY? Because those were some of the best points of the film for me. The entire audience in the cinema was in hysterics.

My personal favourite goes to Hulk.
Huge, strong, fast, hunted down and distrusted but would never harm an innocent and if on your side is all you need to turn the tides of a battle. I also tend to relate to a character that has huge anger issues, so there's that aswell.

I'm a fan of Hawkeye, but I'm so pissed off that they didn't explain who he was! But then again, I'm a DC girl and love Green Lantern, so my opinion may be a little invalid.

Iron Man or Thor for sure. I can't chose between them because Tony is such a loveable smart ass but then Thor is just pure badass.

[HEADING=1] CAPTAIN FUCKING AMERICA [/HEADING]

Seriously he's a great character and sorta the ideal person imo
That quote is just so..God, horrifying? Standing up for what you believe is fine, but more or less saying "I know what is right, and even if everyone else says it isn't so, THEY ARE WRONG!". This is not the sort of person I find to be ideal. This is the sort of person that fundamentalists tend to be.

And OT: The Hulk.

Iron Man, because he is probably the most interesting and flawed of the characters.

Black Widow because...well.. you said it.
I agree with this.

I'd say in terms of who could beat who, I'd say Thor and the Hulk have the most abject amounts of power.

I can't help but wonder why the hell Black Widow and Hawkeye are even there. Wooh, she knows kung fu, and he can shoot a bow. So can lots of people. Doesn't really compare to the God of Thunder, an indestructible mutant, a suit with the power of a military bomber, and the perfect human (that said, Captain America is probably in fourth place)

Captain America. I hated him on principle before seeing his film, because his entire thing seemed to be about patriotism - but damn. I was rooting for him the entire time. I love the way that his weapon is defense, and how that fits in so well with his relatable personality.
Very funny, one of my best friends didn't want to see it either thinking it mindless propaganda. He saw it and loved it.

My thing with him is he is so human and vulnerable. He looks out of place with a giant green monster, a Norse god, Ironman... Kind of like Batman hanging out with the JLA. Should be interesting.

Film: Captain America,
Comics: Wolverine. Because he's the fucking best.

They need to get Wolverine and Spiderman in The Avengers 2 somehow.

Anyway, Iron Man is pretty cool too. Cap > him though because Iron Man was a douche in civil war.

Hawkeye is AWESOME in the film he does some seriously cool things, and Black Widow is also really cool. The Aliens seem really underpowered though.

Captcha: know your rights, links in to the Civil War point I made earlier OOOH CREEPY.

Definatly Hawkeye or black widow they're the most badass in my opinion they dont even have super powers yet they're on a team with some
of the most over powered heroes ever and they can still hold they're ground.
Hulk to he manages to get a lid on his shit at the end.

I've not read the comics, but from the film, I'm surprised how much I liked Dr Banner and the Hulk.
That bit with Loki trying to browbeat the Hulk and then getting that major beat down? Perfect.
Having said that though, I still gotta go with Ironman. Robert Downey Jnr just owns that role.

That worked in parts, the bits about Asgard justice or US justice was fair enough. A lot of the time it felt tacked in to have heroes fighting each other, though that's a fair adaptation of most comics, I guess. And an awful lot of the time they just seemed like whinging kids whose parents should take in hand.

Eh, so? The US developing WMDs might have seemed shocking in, say, 1943, two decades before the first Avengers comic was published, not so much nowdays. They are standing on a flying aircraft carrier armed with nuclear weapons, one of them is a supersoldier due to US military programs, another developed weapons for the military and them went on to build them for himself, and they are worried the US government is building weapons? C'mon.

I don't buy that at all. Normally, sure, it'd work fine, but in the context of having to work together or the entire planet be conquered? No.

IMHO, they were painful. There wasn't much of a story as it was, it didn't need to be constantly interupted so Whedon can tell us how clever and funny he thinks he is.

The Nolan Batman movies had a few funny bits in them, but they worked because they didn't interupt the movie, weren't the same tired jokes we've seen over and over before and they weren't every other scene.

Yeah, they have an all powerful army of infantry you can kill easily enough with a standard handgun. If only people in the US had guns, there wouldn't have been such an issue.

Mind you, the flying turtle snake thingies would have caused problems, you'd really want to have an aircraft carrier with fighter planes on it in the area just waiting for something to do.

The Aliens just didnt seem much of a threat which was the films biggest problem I think.

The biggest threat in the film was the nuke going to blow everyone up.

The Avengers was primarily a comedy though.

My vote would definitely be for Iron man. I especially enjoy Robert Downey Jr's portrayal of him in the films.
