I beg the difference.

Tell me what you think that makes MC a good game character?
He is suited to what he does.

The books read through his story as a child, his personality - All the things that you say the games 'lack'.

I understand your point, but you cant call bullshit without all the facts.

He's suited to be a faceless killing machine?

Even if the books DO patch up MC's personality, the only people who are ever going to read those stories are the ones who already think that Halo is the best game since Super Mario 3. The other people who didn't find it that great are not going to bother to check it out, because the assume that it's just something that's very similar to the game.

My point is that if you're going to release some extra stuff to some game (e.g.fan fiction, expansion or soundtrack), there's no need to try to win more audience than the original thing. If they weren't impressed with the real deal, why would they be impressed to other stuff about it?
If the main dish is shit, you don't wait for the dessert (or something like, what yahtzee once said).

Tingle. Fucking Tingle.

Also, I never cared much for that owl that created walls of text in Ocarina of Time. Except for that one time he gave you a ride out of Death Mountain.

I wasnt bowled over by Halo 3, I played it, Ive got it, its ok. Fun in short burst is how i sum it up. The universe interested me, but you make MC what you want to make of him.

Case in point - Dom, GOW2 - Annoying whiney *****, because[/I] they started on about his wife. Sure they have made him more human, but they made him bloody irritating at the same time.

How is gordan freeman more of a character than MC? Just because he isnt wearing a helmet doesnt mean he doesnt have a personality.

I don't think that GORDON Freeman is much more human than MC, but I do state that he is a bit more, how do you say... credible

Valve has done great job making him what he is with out any dialoque on his part. This is thanks to all the side characters that are there to support his background and desicion making. For example, he's a scientist and the game pace stops from time to time to remind the player from that. The problem is that we can't really say what he is thinking. Would he rather but down the crowbar and start solving the equations of thermodynamic formulas, or does he itch to get to use a new gun he gets his hands on.

Being a silent protagonist is a hindurance for creating an unique hero and not just some Mary-Sue character that the player can relate to.

Eileen Galvin Silent Hill The Room
Well in Eileen's defense she is intended to be a bit of a hinderance as the final battle and how hard it is largely depends on how well you've defended her up until that point.

Unlike many Silent Hill IV is perhaps my favorite installment in the series oddly enough.

The Bard from FF4... so useless... so useless I forgot his name. All he does is whine about the death of his girl friend, and once weakens a dark elf so normal stuff can be used...
It was Edward that Spoony bard

Any character from any Final Fantasy game.
Except when they save their respective worlds.

Also Ashely from RE4, don't hate her but she really doesn't contribute that much.

Thats the thing. he isnt[/I] thinking anything. Its what the player is thinking, Thus projecting the players personality onto the character. If you get a blank canvas on any character in a game your going project onto the character. Whether that be you dress your character entirely in purple, or decide to be as good or evil as you want.

Do you find this as a good thing or a bad thing?

It depends on the scenario. Its not difficult to project onto your character, wether that be the chief, who is fairly predictable, but stable, Or someone with a back story that is in the game.

We have all the time to debate on these things, but I think that we should leave this thread alone for now.

Princess Peach, Oh noes, i got kidnapped again. i wonder how many times mario has thought of just ditching her, declaring himself king of mushroom kingdom and marrying some mushroom chick.
not counting the smash bro's series in which she has some hefty flyign kicks (which i assume hurts even more with high heels) and other spin-offs like mario-kart and stuff like that
She isn't exactly useless, she basically drives the plot of the mario series. :p

Oblivion teammates.

They absord your arrowshots. Then move when the enemy fires at you.

Thanks for that guys!
UGH, yes. Especially when you want to be sneaky and they just randomly charge at anything within a square mile and seem to think it's ok to get between you and the enemy while you are in mid swing.
