The little girl from Resident Evil 2, in Claire's quest. Sherry I think was her name. Leon got Ada as a backup character which was fine since she could actually shoot the enemies. But the little girl had to just run and pray in the face of adversity, which was a drag.

The enemy grunts. They're never challenging (woo! A rat! I'm so scared!), never really accomplish much and usually wind up very, very dead.
They do make one feel better about possible widows, but that's the exception to the rule.

The Survivor bots on single-player L4D. They heal me, themselves and each other when they don't need it at all, leaving them health-pack-less after that Tank incapped everyone at least twice. And they always stand in my way when I'm shooting, or the moment I shoot something once, they all open fire with a hail of bullets, even though I was only picking off one bloody zombie from miles away. Ever heard of a thing called "conserving ammo"? Also, they always seem to be really slow to react when you move on. For instance, they'll never climb a ladder until you've reached the top, so if you get pounced or constricted, you're screwed for a good few seconds until they catch up, by which time you've been incapped by a random horde that decided that now would be a good time to attack.

That said, as far as bots go, they are the best I've seen in a lot of games, so I guess I can't complain too much...

Master Chief. No background what so ever and minimal personality. Hell, even that guy in Doom and Wolfenstein had a face.
Being useless isn't quite the same as having no personality. The Chief is good at what he does even if he is just generic hard man soldier No. 37018

Princess Peach. She can defend herself perfectly well but gets kidnapped ad nauseam.

Jogurt (the Yogurt) in the Shining Force. Looks like a hamster with a helmet, but with less use. ALL his stats are 1, except mobility. And he CAN'T LEVEL UP.

The Adoring Fan from Oblivion. Then again, I think he was intentionally made like that so we don't vent our frustrations with the game by killing a random NPC that we might need later.

Anyone who is supposed to help in Oblivion.

They always get in the way of my sword and I end up killing them, my bounty goes up, or they kill me

if you read the books he gets more personality.
and explains that he has a face, too lol

my vote is for...Cortana in Halo 3...how many friggen time does she have to make you walk in uber slow-mo while your getting attacked by the flood? hell, at least the Gravemind made the screen shake when he yelled at you, she just cries that you left her...annoying AI whore..

*EDIT* however Johnson is, was, and forever shall be remembered as a badass *EDIT*

I believe that if a character is created in and for a game, he/she should be given the personality, background, motivations etc. in the game. The game is what is exposing them for the first time. They don't make movies and say "But wait! After the movie here's a book that explains the background of our main character!". If a movie can't get away with it then why should a game? I understand that the first game was great, kind of like the original Unreal Tournament where awesomeness kind of over-rides the need for a lot of development. H:CE was great. But the fandom from it is all that lets it get away with what it does. The Master Chief, as gamers know him, is a shallow character. To the fans loyal enough (or blind enough, however you look at it) to read the fiction, maybe he's more interesting. In all fairness though, as a "game" character he kind of blows.

I beg the difference.

Tell me what you think that makes MC a good game character?
He is suited to what he does.

The books read through his story as a child, his personality - All the things that you say the games 'lack'.

I understand your point, but you cant call bullshit without all the facts.
He's suited to be a faceless killing machine?

Even if the books DO patch up MC's personality, the only people who are ever going to read those stories are the ones who already think that Halo is the best game since Super Mario 3. The other people who didn't find it that great are not going to bother to check it out, because the assume that it's just something that's very similar to the game.

My point is that if you're going to release some extra stuff to some game (e.g.fan fiction, expansion or soundtrack), there's no need to try to win more audience than the original thing. If they weren't impressed with the real deal, why would they be impressed to other stuff about it?
If the main dish is shit, you don't wait for the dessert (or something like, what yahtzee once said).
zing!

I will say Goofy from Kingdom Hearts...he attacks with a shield and has poor AI. And no magic.
ok, i'm in two minds about this one.
1. goofy is definitely useless in KH2.
2. goofy was useless in KH1 until he learned that magic healing move, because then you just take away his magic stuff and all he does is give you magic points.

but, for myself, i think the most useless character in video gaming is about 3/4 of the NPCs from Lux Pain. none of them contribute to the story, or even need to exist at all.
