I'm a big fan of metal.

As metal fans do best, let us categorize!

Heavy - Judas priest, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin(Really more bluesy and hard rock but are considered one of the mai ncomponents of modern metal so I'm mentioning them).
Thrash - Megadeth, Sodom, Kreator, Slayer, Anonymus and Annihilator.
Black - Gorgoroth, King Diamond, Absu and why can't I think of anything else? My brain is freezing.
Death - Death, Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Opeth, Therion, Necrophagist and many more.
Nu-metal/Industrial - Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, Rage against the Machine and some Disturbed.

Not really. Most metal bands take themselves waaaaay too seriously, it gets ridiculous. Especially when a lot of them have really fucking stupid names like 'Cannibal Corpse' and 'Cradle of Filth.' Another one I saw when scrolling through the comments was 'Rotting Christ.' Seriously? What a joke! My all-time most hated metal band is Apocalyptica. I thought they were a parody band at first, then saw that they were actually serious. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Sure, all metal players have pretty phenomenal technique but I just think it sounds so stupid. My favorite music has groove, cool rhythms and is just plain, old-fashioned FUN.
Cannibal Corpses name is intrinsic with its particular subgenre(Brutal death metal). It emphasizes thicker sounds and held notes. They are also a band that centralizes itself around a central theme of gore and violence. They couldn't really call themselves Rainbow Kitten Brigade, eh?

Well, maybe they could... It would've been hilarious XD

Incidentally, groove metal is a genre. Have you heard any Mastodon? You may like them.

Anywho, what do you like to listen to?

Haha, I dunno, I'd listen to a metal band called Rainbow Kitten Brigade! I'll give Mastodon a shot, cheers for the heads up.
I like funk (Parliament-Funkadelic, The Isley Brothers), old-skool rap (Run DMC, MC Hammer, Beastie Boys to an extent), some hip-hop/gangsta rap (I love Eminem and NWA, but loathe 50 Cent), Rolling Stones, Beatles, Enter Shikari (sort of metal but they're great fun, been to 2 live shows), Gogol Bordello, Talking Heads, the Kinks, jazz, bossa nova, Beach Boys, a fair bit of Romantic music (Holst, Tchaikovsky), some Classical, to be honest almost everything that isn't metal lol! And even then there are exceptions, I kind of like Black Sabbath. In my first post I probably went at it too hard lol, but apart from Ozzie and possibly Judas Priest metal really doesn't do it for me.

Perhaps I like happier, more upbeat music?

Not quite metal, but I'm tired. Maybe later I'll put more.

I like a good deal of Eminem, as well. I've not listened to much old school rap but I have been meaning to get around to it. Classical is great, as is jazz. In fact, I'm listening to Leonard Cohen, right now. Do you have a favourite piece when it comes to classical music? Mine would be the Moonlight Sonata, hands down.

You should give try to Cynic (Death Metal mixed with Jazz, also said to be influenced by shoegaze),Atheist(Death Metal mixed with Jazz and Latin music),Meshuggah (Some mad fusion of Jazz, Metal and Punk with crazy rythms and interesting soundscapes),Opeth (Jazz,Blues,Death Metal, Progressive Rock,Funk, Black Metal, Thrash Metal mixed together) and Neurosis (A sludgy progressive post metal band also with many influences, in a way Mastondon is like them, and most likely influenced by them), Gorguts (Death Metal with very complex structures and Classical Influence) they all do cool things with their music.
Thanks, I'll be sure to try them too :) Maybe I've been to close-minded when it comes to metal, I'll definitely listen to some of what you suggested :D

Favourite classical piece, hmmm...if we're talking pure Classical, then I could go for a few Mozart symphonies (God help me remember the names, especially when they're just numbers), Moonlight Sonata is great too, as is Rondo alla Turca. If we're talking Romantic, then the Tchaikovsky ballet suites. Impressionism would be Ravel, especially Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte which is beautiful. For real 20th century stuff, Stravinsky is hard to beat, but Gershwin (hard to classify genre) and Shostakovich run him close :D

Yeah i am a Metal fan. If you ever wonder about metal in general, take a look at a movie called "Metal, a headbangers journey". Teaching and entertaining movie, type of documentary but more interesting and not just people sitting around talking ^^
