I'm not patient enough to spend too much time tweeking every aspect of simaler looks to get a unique enough look (except Saint's Row 2).

Though, I wonder why some games let you make a character. White Knight Chronicles has you create a character who literally sits in the background during the talky cutscenes, no point other than another mute person to add. They have NO impact on the game as far as I got...which makes me wonder the point of making a character if it isn't the main character.

I have a really hard time deleting games I have invested anything over 50 hours on, I mean I can do it, but it makes me twitch a bit.
This bothers me sometimes, but often I get to a certain point in a game and decide I don't like my character anymore for some reason, and scrap it. If it's one of my favorite playthroughs though, I keep my saves.

OT: I love character creation. If the game let's me do it, I can guarantee that I'll play that game more than any other. I totally role play. Fallout 3 doesn't have the most flexible character creation tool ever, but it does allow you to be certain kinds of characters that are hard to achieve in other games. Especially because of some of the perks. I played an irresistible fellow once, high charisma, handsome, but he'd steal your wallet the second you turned around. It was a little easier to do this in the earlier Fallouts. I hope the New Vegas expansion allows more flexibility. Oblivion is pretty flexible. Sometimes I forget how flexible it is until I put the game in again and start creating a character.
Character creation can really hamper you getting on with the game though when you become obsessed with making the perfect woman ;-) Which with ME2 nostrils, is becoming increasingly difficult!

You should play Oblivion, if you haven't already. You don't have to worry so much about some of those things if you create a Khajiit, Orc or and Argonian. Though, you can make even those look a little funny. But it does make it easier to create the perfect looking Khajiit, cat people are so much cooler anyway. ;)

I've got it, just haven't played it much (I have tinkered with the character creation though) :)

Playing a character to fit with the story is fine too. Sometimes my style of play just doesn't work. My best example would be Bioshock 1.

*spoilers* With the whole "Would you kindly" shenanigans going on throughout the first 70% or so of the game, I usually do the bad choices for the little sisters, because of the whole idea of the "Would you kindly" mind control. Atlas/Fontaine wants you to kill Ryan, needs to to be as strong as you can be, so he puts it in you head that it's a good idea, and he has a backup plan incase you go rogue. After betraying you and getting you're will back, I save the little sisters as a sort of redemption for my past actions, since I can think for myself now, and I see the first part of the game where he guides you as a lie.

Even though I harvested majority sisters, and as a result should get the bad ending, I pretend I got the good ending just so it makes a better story. It just makes more sense to me.

EDIT: Crap I forgot to quote SavingPrincess.

I don't "roll-up" very often in video games, but I tend to do it quite often when I discover a new tabletop system. Or when my GURPS book appears in front of me for no real reason.

I made so many damn Shepards....

I really wish you could do a second edit after the intro sequence, you never really know what your char looks like until you've seen him in a few cutscenes.

I've spent almost as much time creating characters on Rock Band and Guitar Hero with friends, as playing it. We've made everything from bands made of Vikings, famous comedians, real-life rockers (including a band made of different Dave Grohls) and video game characters (a band called "SeeD", an MGS based band with convincing Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolfs and my friend made an AMAZING Kratos).

Oh yeah, absolutely. Any game with a character creator, I'll mess with it for literally hours on end. As an example, I'm almost embarrassed to admit I built an entire roster of 64 characters in WWE Raw 2 on the Xbox...and played it for long enough to get the maximum amount of development points for all of them.

I do the same thing with PnP RPGs as well...far too many characters for far too many systems to remember.

I drive my girlfriend mad with this, get a new game and then spend the next hour or two messing with sliders for nose width and such instead of actually playing the game.

I actually like to make characters in real life, like make them up in my head and make stories for them, just today while I was driving I was thinking about one of the stories for a character I made, not even paying attention to the road, well you know how when you think of something so much (or making a story in your head and acting it out (in your head)) you just lose track of what you're actually doing? Yeah that happened to me when I was driving

I have this problem. Mine always ending looking like they've had a botox overdose pretty much no matter what I do though. But, that could be something the Med-Bay upgrade should have done.

You should give it a go. It is really a great game. And there is ton of humor in it, it just isn't as over the top as some of the other games we have talked about. It starts out a little slow, but once you get into it, it is hard to stop playing.

yeah I do, its one reason why I have so much trouble finishing games.

Though its much more fun to create table top characters. I like to go on runs and think abouta new character. An hour or so later in the run, I have the person completely fleshed out with motivations, how he talks, parents and what each of his kids are doing.

though I might never use them its still fun

I just made a new Mass Effect 1 character yesterday. My friend was sitting besides me,and he asked me "How much longer until you stop making the perfect lesbian and actually play the game.".I had spent some 20 minutes creating my Shepard when he said it.

I prefer the tutorial section to the character creation bit. It's like I just want to relive the joy of getting a new game over and over again.

Also, you still can't spell 'find'. You made the same mistake in your borderlands review, but you obviously haven't learned yet. I shall expect a letter of apology on my desk tomorrow morning.

I second that, it really is great.

As for Shepard, it all comes down to the fact Unreal Engine faces mostly look like someone rubbed a cheese grater across some old leather and plasticine.
