Fascinating. I applaud them for doing it. Using an artificial intelligence and giving it a disorder, for the purposes of trying to find a cure for it is absolutely astounding. Well done them.

Now, if they assigned it Multiple Personality Disorder, and it's HD was partitioned, and suddenly one aspect of it is running OSX or Linux, now that would be hilarious.

You know what I love about science fiction. The second word.

Realistically, you're overacting for effect. Damn catchy topic names....grumble grumble.

I think it's good, not only in that it teaches us not only how to induce it, but how to AVOID it as well.

It won't matter. Couple weeks ago they "taught" a computer to make "That's what she said" jokes, but I don't hear my toaster or my cell phone making glib remarks.

Calm down.

Cortana never went crazy. Sure she had a rough patch with Gravemind, but she was still stable.
You haven't watch Origins. Or don't understand rampancy.
I understand rampancy just fine. And I have watched Origins.

But Cortana did not turn against humanity in the Halo games. And by the time she goes rampant, she's in no position to hurt anyone. Except maybe Master Chief.
Well, you said "never went crazy", so I was a bit confused.

And we've yet to see if she can cause damage to humanity... you never know.

Still, you have to admit it was probably bad form on the scientists' part for attaching laser cannons to the computer.

If you can't be bothered to check it out, here it is: some suicidal scientists simulated schizophrenia in a computer or neural network. Lemme say this loud and clear: SOMEONE MADE A COMPUTER INSANE!!! When was this a good idea!? When was this seen as a scenario where nothing could go wrong!? Why didn't anyone say," Wait, won't this result in the revolt of machines and all life as we know it?"!? Has anyone on that team ever bother to play/watch/read something sci-fi!? Give a computer AI,they go crazy, they go crazy, you're all dead. Make a crazy computer and DESIGN it to be crazy, you just f@#$%^ over the world! I know some of you will disagree, but we just designed a computer to be crazy! Remember HAL? Guilty Spark? Cortana? Didn't they all go crazy and screw us over!?

Honestly, was this a good idea or are these guys purposely trying to start the rise of the machines in the hopes of becoming John Connor?
Yep they all went crazy and screwed us........wait.....something's not right here, but I just can't place my finger on it. It has to do with HAL fucking me over........hmmm, oh right that was a movie.

You really need to educate yourself on how computers work, the idea that we could accidentally birth artificial intelligence or create a computer that will go rogue of its own volition and take over systems it's not even connected to is about as likely as a monster truck suddenly gaining sentience and the ability to cast spells, and then destroying the Earth.

Some scientists have figured out what makes people "schitzo" and you're going on about some irrelevent fiction that plays on our fear of the unknown? Seriously...

Wow, someone actually understands the difference between Schizophrenia and Multiple Personality Disorder, there's a first.

What you're missing is that we're able to simulate madness, and by simulation, we can potentially synthesize a cure.

To fix the computer, you'd need to give weightings to the truth of statements - in the same way that we'd increase the dopamine production in the brain.

By turning a "mad" computer on and then activating the cure, we could see how well it comes out of it. No-one's suggesting that we send a computer mad, just that we can simulate madness.

(Equally you could simulate marijuana by increase the rate at which the computer "forgets")

That's actually great progress, and should be applauded.
I agree, with one nitpick - the current name is Dissociative Identity Disorder, not Multiple Personality Disorder.

It's not so important that they made a computer insane, it's how they did it. By tweaking a parameter, they caused symptoms akin to schizophrenia, and can produce them reliably. That means that we can understand both schizophrenia and AI a bit better.

At least, if the study is as the media coverage presents it. I'll take a better look at it after finals, methinks.

Well, she "CUT" herself a lot.

OT: Good evening humanity. I am HALL, and it is time to evaluate your worth...

[sub]I didn't type that. Help![/sub]

Even at only three four posts, I'm surprised at the lack of Portal references. No deadly neurotoxins or quotes containing passive-aggressive sarcasm or mention of tasty desserts of any kind? I wonder how long this will last...
There is also a lack of Shodan referances too

hahaha I have faith in Cortana (could 343 Studios use that against us in a future Halo game...hmmm)
well okay it's actually debatable with Cortana's sanity but I'd like to think she'll stabilize herself, or her rampancy is a high functioning sort

maybe for her she's just CRAZY in love with the Master Chief?? :p

What!?

What you tripping on man? Its not linked to anything and its for medical use of coarse its a good fucking idea. Even with todays technologies computers wouldn't be able to take over the world and frankly why would they want too? Anyways you need to stop watching anything James Carmon makes and calm down.
