I've been looking around on these forums and I've noticed so many people being aggressive in their posts and thought "man, there's so much hate around here, people just need to chill".

Now, I'll be the first to admit that I can get quite worked up, but generally I try to be as easy going as possible.

What do you guys think about all of this?

On the internet people are anonymous. So there isn't really any penalty for doing stuff that would probably get you arrested/punched in the face in real life, therefore people are very different on the internet. The only way we could get people to not get angry is to ban everyone who gets angry or has a heated debate, which would be a bloody terrible idea since these forums are all about free speech and the like.

(Also I'm not sure if the links count, but advertising is against the rules)

Fuck you, I'll show you hostile!

Seriously though, it really isn't that bad. The Escapist is more in the middle of the hostility spectrum. There are some worse, some better, but overall it isn't that bad here.

I actually come here to chill out, because while people on here can be aggressive and have been known to use it like a personal blog, it's nothing compared to Reddit, which is basically this, multiplied by 10, kicked up to 11 and if you do not fit into the strict criteria of the ideal redditor, then your comments and submissions will be cast down, never to be seen.

This place feels fucking paradise compared to Reddit's community.

Calumon: If it was paradise, then where's my cream puff? : (

I've noticed the exact opposite through the Facebook comments here, people seem to be much more self-aware when they have to attach their names and photos to their comments.

Do you really expect better? You have to remember that this is a large online community...

Its easy to be aggressive when you know you're out of reach and there are no repercussions. I imagine a lot of the keyboard warriors are quite shy and retiring in their daily lives.

It's all the caffeine, makes them rage out of control.

To be honest, I've seen forum communities with much deeper issues than what goes on here. Yeah there may be hostility sometimes, but it's usually weighed down with intelligent coherence, you know why they're angry with the person. Most places have rampant idiots whose crowning argument was "I'm right, you're wrong, go away loser".

Are you saying that I'm aggressive. HUH!? ARE YOU SAYING THAT I'M AGGRESSIVE!?
WHAT, YOU THINK I HAVE ANGER PROBLEMS?! YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME?!
WHY DON'T YOU SAY THAT TO MY FACE, I'LL KICK YOUR ASS I'M LIKE 7 FEET TALL AND I'VE GOT 300 POUNDS OF PURE MUSCLE.
YOU WANNA GO, HUH!? YOU WANNA GO!?

To the point, many people think the internet is their own personal blog where they're free to write about the things that piss them off. (Something of which I've been guilty of on occasion.)
Our internet celebrities aren't helping, many of them get famous simply for getting so damn pissed off. It kinda sets a precedent.
Plus, you're more likely to get arrested or killed if you blow your gasket in the real world, on the internet you almost never have that problem.

Many of the users here have given in to their inner cynicism.

That's just the way things are 'round here, I'm afraid.

But I'm not saying everybody is hateful. There are still plenty of other users who are nice and helpful to each other, like Caramel Frappe, staika, TimeLord, ToastiestZombie (Which is a few posts above me), and so on.

People should be less angry and more inclined to participate in...

Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to post that picture.

You.... Think I'm nice! Wow it's just so weird seeing my name being put in with such legends as Caramel, TimeLord and Staika. I can be angry sometimes, I do have two warnings and both of them were for rather ravagely and angrily dealing with people the mods would of death with otherwise, so I do have my flaws.

I'm only aggressive if you read my posts in an angry voice; try reading them in a happy voice.

example:

"I think this game is a piece of shit, I don't understand why anyone would play it."

read it in an angry voice and it sounds aggressive

read it in a calm voice and I just sound like a little bit of a cynical douche

read it in a happy excited voice and....... I sound a little bit insane

read it in a sarcastic tone and I seem like an alright guy

read it in a depressed voice and it sounds like I'm just disappointed in the game and am not really being aggressive at all.
