Because some things are annoying and not everyone is happy all the time? Also, the internet doesn't require you to sugar your words in order to satisfy social convention. Aggression on the internet is completely harmless and inconsequential. I'd barely even consider it aggression. Just because I might use swear words and clipped sentences, this doesn't necessarily mean I'm angry. Observe:

Fuck this. Those stupid assholes should just die.

This might be how I talk casually. I might be using sarcasm or hyperbole which isn't well conveyed through text. Overall, who gives a shit.

What do you guys think about all of this?

Also, you may want to check out a group called You Need A Hug, on The Escapist [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/You-Need-A-Hug], deviantART [http://youneedahug-ynah.deviantart.com/] and Steam [http://steamcommunity.com/groups/YNAHUG].
I think that everyone needs more hugs!

And anyone who disagrees with that should meet my good friend Mr. Slicey.

He'll set you straight.

I'm usually aggressive IRL because I just don't like a lot of people and I don't like being around people I'm not comfortable with.

Then again, I'm a 17 year old guy in my senior year of high school, so I'm probably expected to be aggressive. However, I have mellowed out now since I was in 9th grade.

Well you can be who you want on the internet, without fear of how your personality would effect you
So you can choose to be rude to others, since you know they can't physically touch you or even come close to you
So if you want to you can be as angry as you like, so many people do this, as they have a lack of outbursts in their real lives as a lot of people on the internet aren't the best at expressing themselves socially.
That's my belief anyhow

Wow, I leave this thread for less than 24 hours and look at how many people think so many different things.

Note: they do so without getting all angry or troll-y. I'm proud of you guys.

Oh and those "ads", just links to groups with other people who don't like all of the aggression on the internet these days.

Got to say, it's a bit silly how all these people are saying things like 'on the internet, you can say stuff without getting punched'. I agree that there's too much rage, and some of it probably comes from me.

But really, should a person's right to speak be determined by whether they can beat up anyone else willing to punch them for it? Because that seems to be the ideal people are pushing - at least, in the case of people they disagree with and who they would like to punch and force to be quiet.

Its easy to be aggressive when you know you're out of reach and there are no repercussions. I imagine a lot of the keyboard warriors are quite shy and retiring in their daily lives.
Like this - forum warriors are weak and shy irl and are only 'free' because of internet anonymity - so? What matters is the merits of their argument, not their social confidence or ability to fight people who disagree like a caveman. But instead, you suggest it's right that they be quiet for fear of reprisal, and imply that it would be a good thing if this could happen on the internet too.

Not at all. I invite discussion and disagreement is natural. I was talking about aggression where posters are insulting, threatening, mean and talk down to others. The title asks "Why all the aggression?" not why all of the discussion?

As I said previously. People often feel safe to insult, be aggressive and be mean when they invisible behind a keyboard. They would likely not be the same face to face. There are consequences away from the internet, trouble at work or school, punishment from parents, loss of social standing. Consequences other than violence Fisheh.

A good example would be me being pulled in for disciplinary action at work for bullying if I'd acted like a few of the ass hats Ive seen on here in my place of work.

Ahh, fair enough. Funny to think that the internet is pretty much how people would act without punishment of one kind or another hanging over them. At least you get to see what they really think, I guess, even if it is just 'I was born in a country so I'm better'. Makes me question how far civilisation has come in making everyone better people rather than just repressing their urges to be assholes.

You know? I rarely feel aggression anymore. Especially on the internet. Impersonal text isn't the best choice of provocation.

Oh, I feel other people's rage all right. I just never get angry myself anymore. I'd say I achieved inner peace if I weren't so skeptical about that statement.

But, yeah. GIFT. Couple that with how my generation has been raised, and you've got a fresh set of punks to inhabit this wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Just because you find a post aggressive doesn't mean that it was intended that or even if it is a bad thing. God forbid you get into a real argument with someone in real life you think the internet is bad. Also finally this is the internet what were you expecting rainbows and butterflies?

It's one of human kinds principle responses to being challenged. It's really just human nature, not much to do for it except to hang on and enjoy the ride.
