Why all the hate for TOR?

You know... I'd never seen any actual hate for TOR until reading this thread. Kudos OP, you've brought the crazies and trolls out to play...

But to the topic at hand: I won't be playing SW:TOR. Not because I think it's "just another WoW clone" or "just another MMORPG", or even because it's "not KotOR3" (even though it totally is). I won't be playing it because I just won't have time. The Old Republic is interesting, but there are at least 2 other MMORPGs that are greatly more interesting to me, based on what I've seen.

I reserve my judgments until after TOR's release, and I won't think any less of anyone for playing it. It has potential to be a great game.

Less of a 'play like your a person in the starwars universe' more 'YOU ARE THE HERO, YOU ARE LEGENDARY, BUT OH WAIT, SO IS EVERYONE!!! Garbage they are preaching almost every dev interview. -3
hahaha!
sorry but the difference of a "MMO" and a "normal game" is that in the MMO everybody is playing the same game at the same time.

so if you play your Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game (first one for example) remember that you have a 50% chance (dark side light side; roughly seen) of having the same character as 1.000.000 other players.
and since the first knights of the old rep. was a stand alone game it had prescripted events and outcomes so you are having the same experience and endings as all the "others".

when i played KOTOR 1 & 2, it felt for me like some sort of MMORPG without the Online multiplayer part:

you had a real time, turn based, ability and gear checked/dependent combat system(which i sometimes disliked. i wished it would be skill based like Jedi Academy or at least Mass Effect.. but that is another story)

you had the chance of avoiding some enemies but you still fougth them to gain, guess what? experience and money so you can 'upgrade' your character/sword and so on.
and you searched every corner of the maps to get the best parts for your lightsaber/blaster.
yes! this is called grinding.

and you had quest structures that required D amount of O for dude/dudette N on planet T or speak to/convince dude/dudette S not to harm dude/dudette U in exchange for his life/C amount of K.

so it makes for me some sort of sense that they continued it as an MMO.
(now you have the chance to play PVP and see if you really are that good)

the only downside is that the story is slightly based on the previous ones and be monthly subscibtions.but i need to do some research about the game before i can argue about it.

all i'm going to say that you could give it a try (i think it will have a free trial time)
and stop bitching about not being a offline MMORPG like the other ones were.

and the 'YOU ARE THE HERO, YOU ARE LEGENDARY'/your are THE villian, you are the Crème de la Crème of malevolence' BS. seriously? you haven't figured that out yet? like being in every F**king game..
I don't care if a single player game has the same story for everyone that plays it. Just like I don't watch a movie hoping it will be like "psst, hey, for you the main character is going to die! But for everyone else a sappy ending"

The problem is that if I want to play an MMORPG, I want all the players to interact and add to eachothers story. In reality you'll get this situation.

"Hey dude, finish X quest yet?"
"Yeah bloke, I did, what did you think of the rancor part?"
"It was good, I decided to pull the lever instead of pushing the button to kill it"
"Really? How did that turn out?"
"Everyone was shocked I thought outside of the box, afterwards I was rewarded by giving me 1300xp"
"Oh man, I only got 1000."
"Well now that we've done X quest, lets do the next one, Y quest, I hear its co-op"
"Sorry dude, we're both Jedi Knights, talk to homie over there, because we aren't compatible.

I dunno, I feel like Two Luke skywalkers doing the same thing and discussing the minor details that made their quests "different" but it really isn't, just a set amount of triggers that will switch some dialog options. Then when you want to pair up with someone for a co-op quest, you have Two Luke skywalkers with almost the same story helping eachother out.
But when that gets old, you go back, make a new character, and play as Han solo instead.
So rather than jumping from barge to barge swinging your green blade, you'll be accidentally hitting boba fett. Not your thing? Well just play as Leia, character, you get to choke a slug!

It just seems like we're going to be playing a massively multiplayer co-op game. There aren't any different stories, just what part you play in them.

I'm not waiting with bated breath, but I've hardly seen any hatred towards the game. I suffer more from a lack of interest and caution on Bioware's ability to deliver. They make good stories, sure, but they're not known for gameplay -especially combat. They've come a long way from KoToR bad, but I'll be lying if I told you I could sit through another full game of Mass Effect.

I don't know much about this game, but have to wonder; are they allowing everyone to be a Jedi?

In my opinion that is why Star Wars and MMO have such a hard time mixing; everyone wants to be a Jedi but they are supposed to be rare.

Right?

I had a lot of fun reading the reasons why they aren't looking forward to TOR. For the most part they were qq about no KoTOR 3, and assumptions that new MMOs will be based on the same model that the genre really started off of from almost a decade ago. I was really hoping someone would have some valid reasons to dislike this game, but they were for the most part knee jerk reactions.
/shrug

I am looking forward to giving it ago, because I'd love to have a new game to pivot to for that "what's out there?" feeling that's so great when you first start a good MMO. I give BioWare the benefit of the doubt to learn from the mistakes that Mythic ran into with Warhammer, especially now that BioWare has taken over WAR (and have been steering it a much better direction).

Don't mention starkiller ::Gag::

I don't have hate for TOR, I have hate with how bioware wants to to be like. I want the game to be like a table top RPG, you basically make your story in the starwars universe.

The big hate I do have is for what bioware is promising. They say its going to be story based, well, I want an MMORPG that has the option not to be the savior of the galaxy, rather, you can be that awesome merchant dude that bought his own private army and takes a sizable chuck of land on a planet to do with what he pleases.

Bioware has all but confirmed that it is impossible to do that kind of thing.

You can't expect people to reinvent the wheel everytime. The game isn't going to be innovative on the battle part, it's going to be in the story part. You should go out and buy the latest PC Gamer where they played the first six hours of the game, y'know, instead of talking about shit you don't have a clue of. Makes things better for all of us. :)
Like I said, this is perfect for those that want that type of game. I'm not ragging on it. Two-three years ago, I would have loved something like this. Now, I'm bored of WoW-like games. I started with Runescape, played ROSE, then WoW and LOTRO. It's the same basic formula for them. It is possible to do something different. And I would definitely love to see the "roleplay" put back into MMORPG. LOTRO had a great RP community, but the dev support lacked.

And I'll see the newest PC Gamer, assuming it's the US version, when it gets tossed into my mailbox.

A shit-load of people, apparently. Trooper/Smuggler/Bounty Hunter/Imperial Agent guilds outnumber Jedi/Sith guilds (Jedi and Sith get 2 classes each, which means 4v4) by 9 : 1.

Many true fans of Star Wars HATE all the Jedi/Sith attention that floats around nowadays. Playing Luke Skywalker gets old, playing Darth Vader gets old (but not nearly as quickly).

Playing as Boba Fett NEVER. GETS. OLD.

Right?
Normally, you'd be right, but the game takes place when both Sith and Jedi were in the peaks of their power. Jedi and Sith were a common sight in this time, with hundreds charging at each other.

It is a terrific answer to the MMO market, because with its focus on story based encounters, it is the perfect answer to the rather aged MMO trends as seen in WoW and pretty much every game that has tried to copy it. Bioware is making some very strong moves there. However, count me in among the haters, because it is a terrible answer to our pleas for Kotor 3. Obsidian built up a major conflict in the Kotor universe, and because of the buggy mess it ended up being, LucasArts decided to take their money and run. Thus, we are now in limbo.

Oh, and before anyone comes down and says that this is basically Kotor 3, 4, 5 etc, don't give me that crap. MMOs are a huge market, but they most certainly are not an attractive market for most consumers to dip into. Subscriptions fees aren't very large, but they basically give you a contract that causes you to waste money even if you aren't playing. I like to play the hell out of a game and then put it away for a few months. I hate being drawn in by grind and promises of more shallow storytelling experiences.

Game gets a score of 2 out of 10 = FAIL
A-fucking-men brother.

Only you forgot one thing; Not Knights of the Old Republic 3, -10

So the actual score? -8 out of 10. Not to mention that they blatantly screwed over the original storyline by just saying in the TOR website a while ago that Revan 'failed' in his quest.

...That's it? Two fucking brilliant games worth of story and THAT'S what you give us for closure? Fuck you Bioware, Fuck you.

If it weren't for Mass Effect and Dragon Age, I would absolutely dispise them at this point.
Don't forget Jade Empire and Baldur's Gate 1&2!

QFT. I personally would have my first guy or "main" be either a smuggler/bounty hunter or a trooper.

Hype leads to counter-hype. It's just that this forums tends to store up the latter more rapidly than the former (see also: motion controls, 3D).

And yet the rest of your post contradicts this statement...
d'oh...theres supposed to be a 'not' in there. what i meant was, it is 'NOT' that the game looks bad relatively speaking, just that i find it to be a completely unnecessary addition to the KOTOR series, no matter how it turns out to be. it could be the greatest MMO in history, but its still an MMO, which is a genre i have no interest in.
