They're a good band? /thread

Don't judge them off of the Supermassive Black hole album. It's really their worst one. I can guarantee if they put out another flop like that the love for muse will tone down a good bit.
I will give their other albums a listen to then.
try these on for size. If you still don't like them, then you just don't like Muse. Which is alright... not everyone has to like the same band. I mean I really don't like Coheed and Cambria, but I do like Mars Volta, DT, Tool, etc.

I love Muse just because everyone of there songs appeals to me. Same way I like bread. You, however, may not. But it's an opinion.
Which is my point, I know its my opinion, I was just trying to see why others like them, maybe they will grow on me like Coheed did.
So you mean like mold grows on bread?

Some of the songs are good. And oddly enough, a Muse song just started playing on iTunes.

Anyhow, I like them. Assassin is an awesome song.

I think the OP was saying that likes other bands with characteristically high pitched singers but not Muse.

I think the problem is they received the bulk of their popularity/radioplay with the release of their last album "Black Holes and Revelations." To avoid flames, I'm not going to say this is a terrible album, but its really sub-par. For some reason the radio just fell in love with Starlight and Knights of Cydonia, neither of which are good songs. Knights of Cydonia has a 4 minute build up to a pretty unimpressive climax and Starlight? Don't get me started on starlight. I don't know what kind of barby doll teenie bopper bullshit they were trying to pull with starlight, but it's just... just awful.

I'll put it like this, I've been a muse fan for 8 years, if I never had to hear another song off of Black Holes and Revelations I'd be very happy.

I like Knights of Cydonia for the music video's epic hilarity and the influence it carries from Bellamy's dad's band, the Tornados. Their music that I've heard is well done, the guitar work makes good use of effects... Aside from that, I can't say Muse is one of my favorite bands, but as has been said, innoffensive.

You should check out their second album, in my opinion (and of most muse fans i think?) their best album to date. Its called Origin of Symmetry.

What i like about Muse is, well, Matt Bellamys voice. He's got an awesome register, and the vocal lines are brilliant. I also love how he often kind of blends his voice with the sound of the guitar.
Muse is very diverse, on the symmetry album they have Bliss and New Born, that are fairly regular rock songs, heavier songs like Plug-in baby, and completely different songs like Citizen Erased/Megalomania and Micro cuts.

The latter is like nothing you have every heard. I dont know if there are even lyrics, you cant distinguish any words. His voice is just conveying sound with emotion.

And also you should check out the non album song Dead Star, its maybe their trashiest song :)

Most importantly, generally their songs have a positive energy. And altho all ive talked about is Origin of Symmetry, i love all their albums, and nearly all their songs, save perhaps Take a bow, which is not a song at all :)

They're awesome because they're skilled at what they do. (As seen in Assassin, above.) Every one of their songs sounds good to me, and I don't think any of them sound alike, which gives them a good sense of variety (a trait which I can't say I've seen in many other bands). Also, Matt Bellamy's falsetto is kind of kickass. But that's just me.

I agree, Origin of Symmetry is probably their best album, especially when introducing them to someone. Micro Cuts does have lyrics, and once you look them up you can distinguish them, albeit barely at first. And personally, Take A Bow is one of the best tracks on Black Holes & Revelations!

This. Music is entirley subjective, so each to his own.

Hell, makes more sense than Coldplay. Chris Martin can't sing, and yet they're immensly popular. What the hell is going on?
That's a good point point. Why is coldplay popular?

Hmmm... well, they're all incredibly talented musicians and song writers without being too anal about it (I'm looking at you... The Mars Volta) and this appeals to a lot of people. I understand Matt Bellamy's voice isn't for everyone, but you have to admit he has an incredible range (listen to Origin of Symmetry-era and b-sides from Hullaballoo). Plus they put on a fantastic live show.

Just to tidy it up, I do like The Mars Volta but they have gone a bit wanky over the last couple of albums. I suppose the same could be applied to Muse... Starlight sounds so awfully like Keane *shudder*.

Because they're a clean, positive and talented band. Also they put on one hell of a live performance.

eughh muse... or more to the point eughhh Matt Belamy.

I hate muse with a passion because of Matt's voice. He sings at the pitch of a wailing baby. If it was higher or lower muse would be listenable to.

Dont get me wrong they're a talented bunch. Their instrumentals are good but randomly placed.

If they kicked out Bellamy and replaced him with a better singer. Then i would find muse a good to very good band. Its just his singing. eugh.

(oh and in my experience; over-obsessive fans who push muse too much.)

It was something that kinda clicked for me. For a while I ignored them, but then when I actually started listening more, it really caught on in my head. One of the best things about them is every single song they've ever written feels valid, like it was written because they wanted to write it, and not just to fill up an album in between singles.
Another is their skill with instruments. Matt Bellamy is praised by many as one of the finest guitarists of this decade, and Chris Wolstenholme has a real knack with effects pedals and stuff that make Muse's bass lines some of the most fun and rewarding to play, even more so that some RHC Peppers songs. I'm not to wise on drums but the drummer is pretty good too from what I can tell.
Whilst his voice may not be everyones cup of tea, you have to ask yourself how many bands you know with a frontman who is actually a tenor, and can use the falsetto register.
Plus, they're amongst the funniest musicians I've ever seen. Watching their behind the scenes videos on youtube and dvd's, you realise that this is just a trio of English blokes having a laugh.

Whilst I fully understand how some people may not like them (I've never thought people should be told what they should and shouldn't like for any reason), I would say that they are perhaps the best new band to emerge out of Britain in the last ten years. Oasis have had their day, and whilst Coldplay and Snow Patrol and all the other fellers are all fine, I feel Muse are just a better and more consistant package

Sucks for you to not like them though. They got a new album coming out soon.

I love the instrumentals personally. I find theres no point in asking why people like certain bands because everyone has diffrent tastes or they are 12 year old girls who are completely impressionable to the point where the believe the Jonas Brothers are actually artists.
I like the way you talk about everyone having their own opinion and then bash the tastes of twelve year old girls like their opinion is not valid xD Not that I personally like the Jonas Brothers but you can surely see why young girls like them? Baring in mind you'e not exactly the target audience.
