A character that is sexualized, weakened, beaten up, and implied to be threatened by rape, all, in the words of the co-creator, "to make her feel protect worthy to men", is a feminist icon?
A creation of someone that is evidently completely unable to understand that men might be able to identify with a female character, or that women game?
That's not the Lara Croft I meant. Before the newest addition to the series she was an ass-kicking bad ass. But with the way that she is being made in this new game it completely ruins it. The developer is seriously stupid to think that men can't identify with a female character. I've had to read an innumerable books with female main characters throughout my education, and I've never had a problem with identifying with the character. In some situations it is hard, but that is expected.

At most they contribute to objectification, which is NOT sexism (It's not good, but it's not sexist) In most of these games the overly sexy women are portrayed as at least competent at what they do. So when ever I hear foul cries of sexism I always have to scratch my chin and go "Huh?"
You seriously don't get why people find the fact that women are mostly portrayed as wank-fodder to be objectionable?
You don't think it is sexist to only portray women as `sexy`, whereas men can have a wide variety?
I'm not even sure what to say to that. (In b4 `you're not the target demo!`).

It does make me wonder whether it's the industry or the community that has the bigger problem, though.
Objectionable, yes. Sexist, no.
There's an entire spectrum of bad.

Sexism is more specifically saying that women are inferior to men because they're women. (Or vice versa, It's not only women who get it)

Implying all women should be 10/10 super models is something completely different.
I never said it wasn't bad, I said "sexism" is the wrong word.
It's like how everyone misuses "Biased" on this forum.

I would like to see an ugly female character in a game.
That would be awesome.
(You should consider the technical limitations, Think of what a pain in the ass it would be to individually design every character model. It's probably just easier to make one hot body and just copy paste it over and over. And by probably I mean definitely)

And it's true that I don't see all the hot characters as some big problem, I see the lack of normal looking characters to be a problem, but neither one of those things fall under the umbrella so "sexism" It's all part of "objectification" which is a different thing all together.

It seems extremely obvious to me.

The games haven't changed, but the demographic has.
For a long time games were marketed to and had a purely male audience, who didn't notice, didn't care, or actively supported the supposed "sexism" in games.

Now, with the advent of casual games and the mass increase in gaming as an industry, the gaming demographic has diversified, and more women, and people in general that aren't used to video games are becoming gamers. It's them that notice the sexism in these games.

As for a recent thing? With the recent influx of sexism themes running rampant throughout forums and news sites, people have sexism on the mind, thus the end up unconsciously (or in some cases, consciously) scouting the games they play and the news they read for sexism.

Nor have I played a tomb raider game. but I have noticed that Tomb Raider and Hitman seem to be the two driving games. Anyone like to explain why these (are/are not) sexist?
1.Hitman uses sexy nuns in an over the top kind of way..which doesnt even make logical sense in context of whats going on....I find it silly, some ofund it offenseive...its defetly silly how offensive you do/don;t find it

2. in Tomb raider Lara gets alot of abuse...but the main thing was ome "implied" rape which I feel wasn't out of place and blown out of propotian

what some people don't understand is that seeing a charachter struggle helps us to empathise with them..IMO anyway
I highyl doubt in the new Hitman that those were nuns or at the very least are similar to the Templars of Assassin's Creed. Maybe the nun outfits were disguises or a cover for their assassin group to acquire money or info. After all, the Catholic Church is pretty widespread and some dark chapters of the group may exist in places. And yeah maybe their under outfits were sexy but it would be easier to maneuver in that than a gown, besides, after using RPGs there was no need to disguise yourself anymore.

of coarse they weren't "actual" nuns...

but even the "using nuns as a disguise" doesn't quite work because they removed their gowns (to reveal sexy stripper ware no less) [i/]before[/i] their target or ANYONE saw them..and again..the stripper wear isn't ideal combat gear

unless it was a cover on route to their target...however a group of nuns (a group of nuns that look like THAT, since most nuns you'll find are older) would be much more conspicuous..than say....a big group of normal girls
