Not be insulting, but that whole rant seems kinda silly. I mean the only reason companies do anything like exclusive DLC at all is for the benjamins. I seriously doubt they care what your "right reasons" are. Let's take your Fallout 3 DLC for example. Let's propose the following situation:
You're Bethesda. You've made fallout 3 for all platforms to solid success. I don't have the exact numbers but let's say that Xbox360 outsold PS3 2 to 1. With PC running a close 3rd. Now you're looking at DLC to develop...
Microsoft comes to you and says "hey bethesda, we'll give you eleventy billion dollars to make the DLC for only the Xbox and the PC"
Now, you were going to develop for Xbox and PC anyway, because Xbox was the biggest seller and the port to PC is a fairly quick and easy process (or vice-versa, take your pick). At this point you have 2 options:
1) Give M$ the finger because you're afraid the 'net is going to call you greedy, spend the development time and resources porting to the unfriendly PS3 architecture, only to recieve fewer sales due to the smaller install base (least-sold system domestically, and least sold copies of your game), and the reduction in profit from the developer fees for DLC on the PSN. Maybe you put your chances at making the money back off the DLC to be, optimistically: 75%
2) Take the eleventy billion dollars from MS. Do what you were going to do anyway and not lose a thing other than a few sales on the PSN that the money from MS is making up for anyway. Put development resources on task of new game development.
Bird in the hand worth 2 bush, which choice do you take?
Oh and let's not forget that in this scenario you're a business that has to make money to pay employees and creditors, not some guy that only has a PS3.
If I were running Bethesda?
Well, if I was feeling 'moral' I'd tell them no, and release the DLC on all formats.
If I was feeling a bit of an arsehole, I'd smile, nod, thank them for the money, and inform them that's the last game of mine they ever get. So, Microsoft get exclusive Fallout 3 DLC, PS3 (and
only PS3) gets the rest of the series.
Let me give an example of why; I have reached the point where I will
not buy a game made by Rockstar, because I'm sick of their shit. By contrast, I've realised that every game I own / have played by Insomniac rates very, very highly. As such, if I see a game is made by Insomniac, odds are I will take the plunge and buy it.
Bethesda? Nah. Why should I? They've shown no desire for my business by putting business before customers, so if I see two games that look equally interesting and one is Bethesda and one is Insomniac, I know which one I'd buy.
