Well, you want a nice anime? I am not fan of them, but man, the Devil May Cry anime is amazing. Langdon lent his voice and the quality is amazing. Apart from that and the Yugioh and Naruto (both are abridged series aka comedies)I do not watch anything else. Oh, and Bleach sucks.

Bleach isn't so bad. Naruto is a show deserving of hatred, though.

For the record, the short list of animes worth watching: Cowboy Bebop, Fooly Cooly, Samurai Champloo and One Piece (NOT the 4Kids version).

In my opinion all forms of entertainment are getting worse, so why should anime be any different?

Anything Studio Gibli is pretty good. I haven't seen Nausica, Papriko or My Neighbor Totoro yet. But we have Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Tales of Earthsea, Grave of the Fireflies etc. Love them all.

Tales of Earthsea???? I HATE you!!! I soooo want to see that! I forgot Grave was Gibli.
We have that too.

Totoro is wonderful. A lighter version of Spirited Away

Tales of Earthsea is very good, but don't hate me too much :) Grave had a great storyline. I might try to convince my partner to buy Totoro, otherwise I'll have to do that myself.

I knew it was coming out, but I didn't know it was already out. Gotta tell the hubby! Loved the books, so this would be icing...

In Australia it is out and you're in America. So if it's not released there by now well then THAT would suprise me.

Seriously, I clicked over and caught an episode of bleach and felt like blowing my brains all over my fucking wall, my.. my beautiful wall. I remember when I would stay up all night to catch an episode of Cowboy Bebop or FLCL but now, like the music business Anime's been filled with mindless shit.

Why do things like this have to happen?
And what Anime cliche drives you up the wall to the point of blowing YOUR brains out, all over your beautiful walls.
Responding to the title first, it's not that their absolutely stupid, it's that they are buying the rights to absolutely stupid anime, and bringing them over. If you want good stuff, you have to look for it youself, aka, you need to look for fansub's by groups like "Heart of Madness" (HOM), who exclusively deal with the best anime ever, Hokuto no Ken, which, incidentally, is actually from the 80's and 90's.

As for Bleach, it's a mindless mainstream action show with a better then normal plot for a mainstream action show. Also, it's uncensored (mostly), so it gets points for that. Not 'cause of gore, but just 'cause I'm an anime purist, and like having the shows changed as little as possible in their localization.

Try Hokuto no Ken (remember, 80's, so the animation is horrid at times), anything with "Fate/Stay," in the title, and Busou (or Buso) Renkin, which is a mindless action show, but is particularly funny (by the guy who did Rurouni Kenshin). Also, remember, fan-subs.

Take time to find the good stuff. There's a lot of good anime out there you haven't seen, especially the stuff that hasn't made it all the way over here yet, like Hunter X Hunter and Monster.

The JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime isn't as good as the original manga or anything, but it's still miles better than Bleach as far as an action/shounen anime is concerned.

There's also a lot of old anime you probably haven't seen that's great, like Battle Angel and the Patlabor movies.

As far as anime being a "restrictive" medium... I disagree. I think it gives more freedom than a lot of other forms of media. Don't believe me? Here are some examples of animes that just wouldn't work as live action (regardless of the fact that a few of them are scheduled for live action releases, it's not going to work, and that's the key thing):

Cowboy Bebop
The Animatrix
RahXephon
Gin Tama
Hunter X Hunter
Battle Angel
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

And then there are other animes that would work quite well as live action, but choose animation probably because of the style. These would be shows like Patlabor, Jin-Roh and Monster. They could work just AS well in live action (due to the realistic nature of these shows), but for whatever reason were made in animated form.

People who say anime is an "immature" medium in general probably haven't been exposed to the many, many examples of quality writing present in the less-popular animes. You can't look at Naruto or Bleach and say that's indicative of all anime, ever. Watch the Patlabor movies, Jin-Roh, Paprika, Monster and Cowboy Bebop and then talk to me about poor writing or immature storylines. Even something like Cromartie High School contains quality writing, with witty parodies and biting satire of common Japanese (and worldwide) steriotypes.

Look familiar?

Azumanga Daioh is possibly one of my favorite anime of all times, and I'm sure as hell not ashamed to admit it.

AzuDai is a peculiar type of show: it seems like it's meant for the kids, but I don't think you can actually appreciate it unless you're older.

When I watched that show, I can remember thinking "Hey, I used to do stuff like this all the time with my friends when I was in high school". It's familiar in a way. I think that's what makes it so good

Edit: That and Osaka. I've yet to see another character turn randomness into such hilarity
You may have a point. But there's still a stigma attached to a twentysomething male watching a show about Japanese teenyboppers. Though I'll concede that Kimura's creepy ass alleviates some of that stigma in the form of parody.

You're definitely right about Osaka, though. It's like, the producers of that show thought, "Hey, let's make a character who, instead of a brain, has her head filled with, I don't know, marshmallow. I swear, her face has a permanent "=D" look to it, at all times. For the record though, she was not my favorite character, hilarious though she may be. Rather it was Sakaki, with her closet-love for kitties.

Some's shite, some's good, just like everything else. Want something original and good? Watch Michiko to Hatchin, it started in October and I don't think it's quite finished yet.
Info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michiko_and_Hatchin

It's so different from any others I've seen, and it's SO well done, everyone has to watch it. You'll find it on Youtube.

If you're willing to watch a 'girl's anime', Ouran High School Host Club is really funny too, and well-written.

It's like any market.

Some time ago, anime made a bit of money and people who didn't have their grubby fingers in the pie decided to stick their fist in, throwing capital at their venture. Once again making the ultimate capitalist error that is "money replaces talent".

This, is not so true.

I honestly hate harem shows, and the whole "perverted old man" thing.
Not all of them are bad...
Tenchi, Love Hina, and Cheeky Angel are good, though prolly wouldn't appeal to you...

I used to watch Tenchi Muyo all the time when it came on Toonami. I mean the newer ones.

It fills me with dread, and even shame, that the last anime shows I enjoyed were Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh. They both belong to this genre of female high school students who do nothing but talk. I'm serious, that's all it is. It's the stupidest premise I've ever heard, yet somehow it reaches me, and it's funny to watch. At the same time though, I feel a little weird watching it.
Difference is, Azumanga Daioh was a short, sweet, surreal little series. While Lucky Star is what you get when take that and try to (read fail) repeat that same formula and end up turning it in to a vapid little piece of lolicon garbage. Har har, the characters are genre savvy, hilarious! Not.
