Every single day I hear yet another story of idiots, doing idiot things, because they're idiots, and quite frankly, it's depressing. We so rarerly hear about scientific innovation, medical advancements, yet every day we are force fed images of stupid people living out their worthless lives and dragging down those around them.
Not just the news, reality tv and the like. Why are entire families of dumbasses like the kardashians given so much admiration and publicity? Why is it that we hear so much about peter Andre and his continuing pointless existance, but never about anyone who lives a worthwhile life?
What is it that so draws us to respect these wasted mouthbreathers? Why is there no longer any bastion of intelligence left in the media? We barely even hear of those who, whilst they may not be intelligent, help others, or are just nice people. We only ever see self absorbed rich jerkoffs using other people to get more money. It's insane.
These are our role models, these are the people we are supposed to aspire to be like? It's just wrong. The world is plagued by the stupidity and greed and intolerance of those who seem to live to ruin it for everyone else. The multimillion dollar businesswoman who keeps people in poverty by robbing the poor to feed the rich, The airhead celebrity who deosn't particularly understand how he has money, but doesn't ask questions, and then the entire organisations of anti this and anti that, people who dedicate their lives to culling others based on their sexuality, race or gender.
The entire world seems to have gone insane, driven to the brink of madness in a chokehold by these people, and the worst part is;
You and me, us and the "Intelligent" people?
We let them.

People like to witness the stupidity of others to feel better about their own existence.

Lock and load gentlemen/ladies. It's time to kill the Kardashians, the cast of Jersey/Geordie Shore, the cast of Made In Chelsea, the cast of The Only Way Is Essex. Don't worry bounty hunters they feel no empathy, they are merely Nexus 6 androids. So you don't have to feel guilty. 1000 pesos for Kim Kardashian's android breasts head.

Personally I'll take a world where the bad is the extraordinary thing that we're shocked at rather than where it is the thing taken for granted and the intelligent altruists are an exceptional wonder.

... and nothing has changed. Things haven't become worse, its just that you can hear about more stuff - and everyone finds a calamity more interesting than 'Well, this guy supports his family' or whatever.

Intelligent people do try to make a difference - scientists create new medicines, genetically modified plants, nuclear energy - things that could help uplift humanity. But the 'intelligent' people are simply outnumbered to the extent we can't change things so drastically and never could.

Because there are more people than there are scientific innovations.

So, just because you see more things you don't like on TV, you think that it's like that in reality?
I don't think anyone actually respects these reality tv people. All I hear about the Jersey Shore is how dumb and vain those people are. Same about the Cardashians. I've yet to come across a single person who would look at them in a positive light.
Most people watch those things to laugh at them and boost their own self esteem ("It's good that I'm not as stupid as they are" and such).

No, these are the clowns we laugh at. the fact that they make money by being clowns is another thing but it has nothing to do with respect and admiration.

That's because we've created a society concentrated on gathering wealth.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who you are and what you do/say/think. Money is all that matters, at least in our society.
The media exist because of money and they want to keep existing so they follow the path that gets them money.
Showing crime and violence gets people's attention way easier than showing peace and understanding.
have you ever noticed that there's a lot more discussion value in negative things than in positive things?
Something positive happens: "Great, keep at it." That's basically it.
Something negative happens and everyone suddenly got an opinion about the reason and solution, there are different camps with different, often mutually exclusive opinions, there's conflict between them etc. It's more entertaining to observe and/or take part in conflict than it is to agree on something. Just like it's more entertaining to show stupid people than smart people.

People who are more concerned with other people aren't really profitable for the media industry so they're not shown in the media.
Just because the media aren't showing these people doesn't mean they don't exist.

The depressing part is that since majority rules, even though the intelligent/benevolent people may invent those things, everyone else (of whom 50% are, by definition, below average in every measurable thing) get to decide how those inventions are used/not used.

Dunno, if I heard a bunch of people referring to themselves as "intelligent altruists" I'd run as fast as I could away from them.

Well this thread's a downer...

Misanthropy annoys me to no end.

Let the masses watch what they want to watch, if Kim Kardashian figuring out how to open a door is the highlight of their day then good for them.

I'll just be over here, agonising over how unforgivably attractive I am.

Hm.

It seems to me like the OP is being pretty... intolerant.

Yeeeeaaaaaaaaah!!!! [http://mirrors.rit.edu/instantCSI/]

Anyway.

Scientific innovation doesn't... exactly... happen every single day.

Reality TV on the other hand...

I'm pretty out-of-touch with the outside world in any way, shape, or form though, so I'm not exactly the best person to talk to about this stuff. But I think that if people enjoy this kind of paparazzi schlock, then more power to them. We still get news about the really important stuff.

Sometimes you just need to look a bit deeper for it.

That's what I got out of all this.

I live a much happier life not knowing what those reality show people are doing, and the one time pure apathy is key here.

OT: What about medical and technological advances?

They don't happen every day and when they do, they're kind of a big deal.

Chill out and just ignore those people because give them a few years and they won't matter.

Reminds me of the people who will watch stuff they dislike just to be outraged by it :D

'This is terrible, such language and partial nudity! If only there was a way to not be subjected to such filth!'

Well, why are videos of people falling over on skateboards on youtube more popular than amazing skateboard stunts?
,
Stupid people being stupid is more entertaining, put simply. That's not to say smart people can't be entertaining, of course, but to most people, stupidity is the order of the day, indeed, for far longer than that.

As for the greedy and intolerant, seasons come and go. Right now, we have a society that is crushing underneath the strain of such people, and eventually, the world will change, and these people will be left with little option but to adapt or join the ranks of their own victims.

Our role models? Who says we need them? You can drive yourself in life. You don't need an example. If it bothers you so, use these people as your "what not to do" example.

And remember, nobody is untouchable. There's always a way to destroy someone if necessary. They all have weaknesses, skeletons in the closet, fears, it can all be manipulated to leave someone a wreck.

And one more thing. Have something to hold on to. A thought. An ambition. For example, I want to be a horror director, and it motivates me to think that everyone who tried to stop me, everyone who put me down, every idiot in the street, every moronic celebrity, will one day lie awake, unable to sleep because they're imagining something I created in the dark. That one day, just for a little while, their minds will be my playground.

I used to work with someone like that, and trying to get a rational answer out of her as to way she watches it was just not happening.

'Because I can't believe this stuff is happening on TV! How can anyone watch this?'

Tis madness with these people.

Hum, let me just find an image here... ah here we are...

Your view of the world is precluded on the notion that you are better then everybody and that the world is burning because it is full of people who are dumb and below you. That's not exactly a clear view of the world and even if it was its horribly conceded. My suggestion is that you learn to live with it because the world isn't changing (or go into politics and maybe change something).

I find it highly suspicious (and not to mention unlikely) that you two would bring up the words "bastion" and "calamity" by coincidence... IT'S A CONSPIRACY, I TELL YOU!

OT: I feel you, bro. I feel you hard. I live every day trying to be the best person I can be for everyone and everything, but those greedy, intolerant, INSANELY STUPID cuntfucks sure know how to annoy the shit out of me. It's so fucking retarded I want to cry (and sometimes die). Live and let live does not apply to those who worsen everyone else's lives. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK, I'M SO ANGRY. Or, disappointed, actually...

Why wouldn't captcha accept my answer to "what planet are we on?" when I answered with "Tellus"? Is it not correct (because of lingual factors)?
