Personally I think there's a ton of stuff here worth a few bucks a month, I just don't have the disposable right now, it's not the content or the price putting me off, just the fact that I'm a pauper.

I agree that the 'free' options are pretty damn good too, the ads aint so bad, a 20 sec movie trailer before the big attractions on site like Moviebob and ZP and Extra Credits? I can handle that, hell, if the ad people have done their job, I might even be interested in the movie. One tip ad guys, best not to advertise a movie bob's gonna review, might not work out so good

Yup you can switch between em any time, I have too on my laptop sometimes (2GHz Single core Pentium M). but my desktop always stays on HD

Because its $20 for a year on a site that well, frankly does not put out high enough quality items to earn that sorta money from me.
Ads can be ignored or people can use adblock if they wish, higher quality video... of what? The 3 shows I watch are Extra Credits, ZP and moviebob... What would higher quality video possibly do except waste my bandwidth?
The forums... considering I got suspended for 3 days for asking in a featured furry thread if this site would do one based on pedos, back before I knew how bigoted they were, and then another 7 for unspecified "trolling" I aint gonna waste my money for that either.[footnote]Hell at the rate they are going this post alone will get me a 14/30/permanent ban as it is.[/footnote]
And game reviews, I saw in a thread about a month ago one of the "reviewers" on this site saying he does not feel bad about "reviewing" a 50 hour RPG after only playing 10 hours of it.
Aint no way I am paying for such unprofessional reviews.
Sorry man, I am happy enough with them getting $ from ads appearing on my PC but at $20 a year they would have to provide a lot better than that.
Maybe if they dropped it down to $5 for a limited time but thats my max.

Ability to be part of a focus group and fill out surveys on the site's direction: Isn't that something that you know, would be better having everyone participate in? So that those who A) make up the bulk of your population and B) who currently do not like the current things can have a say and make your site better and maybe then be willing to pay...

Stop ranting mate, if you want to discuss your suspension, the mods are here to talk it out, there are reasons for your suspensions which you seem oblivious too.

I've always wondered this since I noticed most of the escapist is not members, and always wondered why. For a whole years membership there not asking for alot of money and just the HD Video's and No Ads make it rather worth it in and of itself.

You forgot one of my favorite features anyway, no more multiple pages for articles. If you want you can set it to put everything on one page. I love the hell out of that as well as the larger videos (I'm still trying to figure out why YouTube constantly defaults to the small video size, I didn't buy a 21" monitor to look at a tiny video!) and no ads.

Also, when they launched it they price was halved, I think it was just $10 for the year. Too good to pass up I thought.

Whether or not I renew depends on if I have money at the time though. If I do I sure as hell will renew.

...I think HD is a fad... the Publisher's Club has absolutely nothing to entice me with. I view it in the same category I place 3D and Blu-Ray in. A pointless fad that I'm rather angry people are wasting money on.

I just have to ask, why do you think HD and Blu-ray are fads? I can maybe see why you'd say it for 3D, but I don't expect we'll ever see definition go down with new devices. It'll just be that current HD screens will get cheaper as newer and better ones come in. And Blu-Ray is only a fad if you think DVDs were/are a fad. Or CDs. Or tapes. They're just formats.

Lack of cash, and I'd rather save up for a new game then have no ads, honestly. I love this place and all, and I may very well do it later, just not now.

I'm honestly quite cheap. Now I paid monthly fees at brainpop because knowledge is limitless and there videos can't be watched without money and to be honest they are very educational. I subscribe to gameinformer because every month I stay ahead of the curve on all the general goings on in the video game world and some extra stuff as well. Now why wouldn't I subscribe to the escapist? because I can ignore ads. because I don't care about HD. And special forum options are worthless to me. Also it's a monthly fee. If my mom has taught me anything it's to never tie extra money down to ya that you have to pay every month/year unless you really get something out of it or it's mandotory like bills. Every website with strength and clout wants you to pay a monthly fee and if I gave them all my money I wouldn't have anything for myself.

Come back when being a monthly member means getting to play indie video games early or sometimes getting a stuffed animal or a keychain in the mail. that would at least be worth it. Ya know swag and real special priveledges.
