I'm surprised that we've only had a few Metroid references so far. =/santaandy said:There have been plenty of good female characters and female-friendly games recently.

Personally I don't like to advertise that I play video games (in "real life" at least), and I'm not sure if it's for the same reasons, but seeing as how I have a relatively androgynous personality I think I can understand where a lot of girls are coming from. "Gamers" are a rude and obnoxious bunch.
NOTE THAT I PUT THAT IN QUOTES. I don't mean people who play games, but I mean that group which is always labeled as "gamers" by the media. The group most in the public eye and ranting drunkenly on Xbox Live. That group. Not all gamers, but the one most obviously apparent.

i think its more that the griefers on XBL and other voice chat enabled systems have developed a fear of women and thus clung to others with the same issues which then proceeded to fester, and (here is the geek in me comming out) as yoda so wisely said, fear turns to anger, anger turns to hate, hate turns to flamming.

like someone said before more guys will be interested in playing games for hours solo and multiplayer isn't the greatest social place to interact.
Anyone else getting tired of saying girls? feels a little childish because by default it makes us little boys, when people are teens or older I think it's suitable to say women
instead unless referring to a kid.
I think in order to understand mankind, we must first look at the word itself: "mank" and "ind." What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind. - Jack Handyknottingam said:Generally speaking, that is. I realize that there are some girls on here; but it seems that y'all are the exception to the rule. I'm just curious: Why is the female-to-male ratio amongst gamers so low?
I play Halo 3 on XBL at least 4 days a week. Unfortunately, its not always a godsend for me. I left early last night because I couldn't play a game without being abused, called a slut, skank, whore, *****, hairy-chested, fat, a shim... there was more, but this was merely while the map was loading. It's pretty easy to mute, but I don't see the point in playing with a headset when I can't communicate with my team (or even say "hi" without the accusations of being a pre-pubescent boy or a brothel-worker).Sennz0r said:I had the wonderful privilige of gaming with a few girls on XBL a couple of times.
Believe it or not, it was Halo 3.
That was a godsend, seriously.

It's not always like that though, from time to time I will get teamed up with players who are mature, friendly and couldn't give a crap about my gender, which for ME is a godsend. I have a few girl friends who are gamers but are too timid to venture online because the abuse they endured the first time they spoke. I, however, purchased a year's XBL subscription and be damned if I'm not going to get my money's worth![/quote}
I'm sorry you had to suffer people like that. For me it's just nice not to have to play with little toddlers who kill me when I go for the sniper for a change, but I can imagine your situation just sucks. I don't know how people like that came into being but I wish they'd just stop existing for all our sakes.
