Yeah people (namely women) can not tell a developer to make this character and that NPC and that model and that picture female just because they think its sexist that the female gender isnt present. If they dont like it they can design their own game because it isnt a problem for men and for intelligent women it isnt a problem for them.

And if they dont like looking at sexy women then dont play the game.

Oh the hot nerd chick... a very mysterious and rare race. No seriously it?s hard to come by girls that play video games and I?m not sure I want to, most of them are... un-amazing? (I?m trying not to be offensive)

also I never like to hit on girls in online games because your social skill points go down 15 and I only set my charisma to 5 in fallou... well you get the point. game have mostly been directed towards the male population because we find violence relaxing and females find shopping, bitching about each other behind their backs and tormenting a person until they have a mental/emotional breakdown relaxing.hehehe, take fallout 3 for example, first thing the gore is totally over done and it requires a lot of rpg elements that would confuse most girls, my sister was confused enough that while she killed 2 super mutants in a post-apocalyptic wasteland that there was cheery 1950s music in the back.

Possibly in Half-Life 2: Death Match. We have some rather decent conversations in that game... for some odd reason.

Personally I don't like to advertise that I play video games (in "real life" at least), and I'm not sure if it's for the same reasons, but seeing as how I have a relatively androgynous personality I think I can understand where a lot of girls are coming from. "Gamers" are a rude and obnoxious bunch.

NOTE THAT I PUT THAT IN QUOTES. I don't mean people who play games, but I mean that group which is always labeled as "gamers" by the media. The group most in the public eye and ranting drunkenly on Xbox Live. That group. Not all gamers, but the one most obviously apparent.

i think its more that the griefers on XBL and other voice chat enabled systems have developed a fear of women and thus clung to others with the same issues which then proceeded to fester, and (here is the geek in me comming out) as yoda so wisely said, fear turns to anger, anger turns to hate, hate turns to flamming.

The majority of girl gamers are casual they don't have the competition of I have to be the best they just have fun playing it and don't take them as seriously (or at least that's how me and all my friends think, of course their are always exceptions)

I had the wonderful privilige of gaming with a few girls on XBL a couple of times.

Believe it or not, it was Halo 3.
That was a godsend, seriously.

well, i dont play on live, partially because im not a moron, partially because my xbox is not in a position to be wired, and wireless cards for the thing are overpriced... but is there ANY group of people that isnt verbally abused on live?

and yes, we do only play casual games and single player RPGs, because when we touch internet we cease to exist, and so when we try to play anything else... poof. i tried to play half life yesterday, but as soon as i plugged in my network cable, double clicked on steam while windows did its thing and-boom, nonexistent.

I don't think there is a profound reason to it, it's most often not one of the interests that girls will meet or be interested in. I also think there could be the social side of it as well,
like someone said before more guys will be interested in playing games for hours solo and multiplayer isn't the greatest social place to interact.

Anyone else getting tired of saying girls? feels a little childish because by default it makes us little boys, when people are teens or older I think it's suitable to say women
instead unless referring to a kid.
Actually the scientific term for males who game is either 'dudes' or 'Bros'
Or in most cases, 'tools'

Generally speaking, that is. I realize that there are some girls on here; but it seems that y'all are the exception to the rule. I'm just curious: Why is the female-to-male ratio amongst gamers so low?
I think in order to understand mankind, we must first look at the word itself: "mank" and "ind." What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind. - Jack Handy

Seriously, you're asking the wrong question. If you want an answer, you basically need to ask "why aren't developers targeting women?" I could answer that in a variety of ways, from Japanese xenophobia to poor marketing. Even the above question is still very broad, but "Why aren't girls into gaming?" is a poor question. Especially since we already know women are into gaming, the spread is just a majority of males. Even then, that's disappearing as well, because the barriers to access are less strenuous than they once were. Give it time and it all evens out. There was a time when male writers believed females were inferior and could never produce a well-written work. Obviously that time has long since past (for most), but it gives historical connotation to why women are marginalized so often in certain areas and dominate in others. It's a question of dominance and it's unlikely that we'll survive in a world of castration. So you have dominating roles in certain areas, as has been the case since the beginning.

In my case it's not that guys really care whether or not a girl plays videogames (in fact I assume most of you might view that as a 'turn on'), the problem is how other women act when another woman plays videogames. I have a few friends that play videogames all the time who are girls and they wouldn't dare tell any of the 'popular' girls about it... now i could go on and talk about the inner brain of a woman, but i think that no guy can discuss that without talking out their ass... but you can always look at things from society's point of view.

I think its because girls are really bad at video games [of course I dont mean that, but the internet is full of people who think like this] seriously though, lets just take a look at some of the women we feature in games, shall we? Ivy, whos boobs are big enough to land spacecraft on, Laura croft who could turn a frat house into a well organized team of accheologist's with a turn of the glance, and 90% of female co-stars who never, EVER shut the hell up. Maybe if women were given some half decent roles instead of sex appeal and being the equivalent of a five year old who you want to smack on the head with a cutting board, more women would be intersted in gaming. PS: Bring back the goonies!

I play Halo 3 on XBL at least 4 days a week. Unfortunately, its not always a godsend for me. I left early last night because I couldn't play a game without being abused, called a slut, skank, whore, *****, hairy-chested, fat, a shim... there was more, but this was merely while the map was loading. It's pretty easy to mute, but I don't see the point in playing with a headset when I can't communicate with my team (or even say "hi" without the accusations of being a pre-pubescent boy or a brothel-worker).

It's not always like that though, from time to time I will get teamed up with players who are mature, friendly and couldn't give a crap about my gender, which for ME is a godsend. I have a few girl friends who are gamers but are too timid to venture online because the abuse they endured the first time they spoke. I, however, purchased a year's XBL subscription and be damned if I'm not going to get my money's worth!

There's a lot of true statements in this thread. I don't think there's any one right answer, or even that there's a problem to address (Other than the harassment issue, which totally sucks. That should be a bannable offense).
For the record, in my household my wife and daughters are all regular gamers. They aren't playing stuff like Crysis or Gears though. My wife plays Mahjohng online. My daughters both play Sims and Entropia Universe, plus other assorted Online Arcade stuff. So yeah in my life there's no shortage of female gamers. Everybody plays according to their interest is all.

Hello everyone, I'm an exception. Most girls arent into games because.. I dont know.. They dont understand the joys involved? It doesn't matter.. They all should be!

Its simple: Games these days model women as Tits (See Ivy From soul Calibur) but yes some game developers are making games that start female main characters.

i really wish more girls played games, im tired of going on SOCOM Confront and only hearing the same 2 vocal patterns (high pitched 9 year old or 45 year old gator' rastler) but i know what is going to happen to gaming, its going to turn into HOME. where if you give them the same amount of female options as the men do the 9 year olds will dress up as Fat, short Black Women with far to much makeup on and go around saying "Fuck me?"

I'm sorry you had to suffer people like that. For me it's just nice not to have to play with little toddlers who kill me when I go for the sniper for a change, but I can imagine your situation just sucks. I don't know how people like that came into being but I wish they'd just stop existing for all our sakes.

MMOs tend to have a decent influx of the female demographic, because in MMOs most people use common courtesy. Although you'd never be able to tell if someone's a girl unless they speak in Vent.
