Why can't I not like a form of music?

Dubstep has nothing to do with metal. It evolved from Wobble (yes, that was a genre).
There's also a contingent of dubsetep listeners who insist mondern dubstep be called "bro-step" as it focuses very heavily on the midrange instead of sub-bass like old dubstep.

I don't really care for dubstep in most forms. I like what Chase and Status are doing (they're sort of mixing dubstep, grime, urban and breaks) when they aren't just making straight up D&B.

hehe as a fan of DnB, it's hard to disagree.

a lot of it does sound exactly like they were trying to make some techstep and failed, usually because the drummer took too much K and passed out during the buildup.

it makes me feel like being in a roller-coaster that's slowly climbing, building your excitement for the big drop, only when you reach the top and go over the crest...it's a just flat section leading nowhere.

It's disappointing that as soon as you say 'dubstep', people automatically associate it with overproduced, overused, generic wubbing, in turn meaning that all the really good and creative dubstep artists are ignored.

As I've stated to one of my friends, Dubstep is the easiest form of music to make but the hardest to make appealing, let alone amazing. Once you realize that most of dubstep is done by talentless kids in their basements, you can look for much better forms of it. But as I said, it's difficult to make it sound good. Many people don't have the talent. I've only heard roughly 2 or 3 really AMAZING dubstep songs.

well, what makes you consider any of those as being dubstep? what elements do they share with what everyone else refers to as dubstep?

all 3 sound like good old fashion triphop and/or downtempo to me.

I don't want to be too ignorant on the "DubStep" subject but the first two sound much more like DnB.

I personally love a lot of what the UK community is putting out these days but I'm also an "old man" compared to those who it is aimed for.

It's always ok to state an opinion no matter it be music, movies, or politics. It's the fervor of the hate, like, or don't care that will get on someones nerves quicker than anything.

I feel similarly about music. I love at least a few bands from every genre or sub-genre of metal, except for hardcore or deathcore. I love MUSE and radiohead and grunge and other rock and alt-rock bands. I like some electronic music, I love classical music. I actually like some dubstep too.
I can't stand pop music or R&B or country though. People look at me like I'm insane. Some suggest I just don't listen to it enough. I do; I get subjected to that shite on the bus journey to/from college every day.

I object to a few things about it really. Firstly, the insincerity of most pop artists makes me want to murder them. How can you justify wanting to be any kind of musical artist when you're essentially just leeching off other people's talent (ie the people who actually write the songs) and have nothing to say? They are blatantly in it for nothing but money.

Secondly, the music itself rarely makes any attempt to stray from formula or innovate at all. Simple chord progression, same drum pattern repeating through the song, either autotuned vocals or crooning. Maybe they make a short bridge in minor to seem a bit edgier. Go away.

Thirdly, as well as the music itself being made for material reasons rather than artistic ones, the lyrics are often materialistic or about some other trite bollocks.

Fourthly, fuuuuuuuucccck youuuuuu Rihanna and fuuuuuuuuuuccck youuuuuuu U2.

I respect anyone who tries to get involved with all types of music. But that I don't mean the kind of lacklustre person who says "yeah, I like a bit of everything" which translates as "I know nothing about music and don't want to".

I got into dubstep recently and have to say I see where your gripes are coming from and so I offer you Nero. His stuff is pretty varied and quite chilled, for dubstep. Just a suggestion.

Also, just a little nitpick: screamo is not a genre, it is a word which people often use to group together any music with screaming vocals (hardcore, metalcore, deathcore etc) and is a pretty weak and annoying description of otherwise excellent music.

The songs are so much closer to D&B that's why I said dubstep is pretty much shitty versions. They lose the essence of the song just for the wub wub abuse which is why quite a few people are turned off by it. People like a melody which bad dubstep lacks and when you get good melody you're better off calling it D&B.

That's not dubstep. Nu-metal typically refers to excessively stringed, downtuned instruments repeating a heavy riff while screaming, and drone metal is just metal in slow motion. Neither of those have anything to do with dubstep or really any sort of electronica.

Dubstep is a general term used to describe music that relies heavily on a wobble-bass (a bass with a parabolic LFO curve). This is used in all sorts of music that classify as dubstep. Some of this music is very relaxed and has an almost reggae feel to it, and reggae is pretty much the anti-metal.

Personally, I think it's stupid to name a genre of music based on the wave shape of an instrument. Most popular dubstep is either electro, drum and bass, or hip hop, just with a wobble-bass.

If you still think dubstep is "metal [with] techno elements", listen to this and it should clear things up.

It seems (based on what you're saying) that you're well enough experienced in music that you have had enough exposure with these other genres to make an informed decision. That being said, anyone who says you aren't allowed to dislike a genre of music obviously has no idea what they are talking about. It is your opinion on what you find pleasant and classify "good" music, just as it is there's. Granted you could argue that each type of music is an equally valid form of expression, but that doesn't mean you have to enjoy it. I for example don't listen to music (I may have listened to like 2-3 songs purposely over the last like 5 months), but I don't mind any style of music except for heavy screamo. Basically little teens yelling into the mic in some forced harsh voice just doesn't appeal to me and ruins perfectly good songs IMO, but some of my friends like it and who am I to say that what they like is wrong.

Metal used to be my thing, but not anymore ... I still love a handful of metal bands, but most of them are just annoying. I've always hated all country, I grew up with that genre so it got old and stale and foul-smelling on me years and years ago. Most hip hop and rap is just poorly made music, and while there is the odd okay song it's extremely rare. Things like speedcore and dubstep are absolutely amazing when done right, and terrible otherwise, and only about three artists know how to do it right. I'm sort of an all-around electronic fan, I like a bit of power metal, I like a bit of orchestral, some different kinds of rock ... I like music from every genre (except country) but there's a lot of music I don't like too. It's okay to not like things, it's kind of terrible that people would call you close-minded for it, especially since whoever they happen to be has most definitely run across music they don't like at all as well.

You are. The thing is, we have a right to interpret something in any way we like, and that's just fine.

The problem comes in when we start to believe that we also have the right to react in any we like, which is when we're supposed to be mature.

Personally, I very much don't like screamo and certain types of heavy metal. Thats fine. Its when I make derogatory remarks or start mocking its fanbase or bemoaning its popularity that I do something wrong.

See, the thing is. Eventually you will stop liking modern music. It happened to our mothers and fathers and it will happen to us.

Just enjoy the music you like, and dont worry because these days we have the internet, where any niche of music can be found.

Well, in a sense you're right about the "stop liking modern music" bit and what I mean by that, is that the music stops being modern at one point. My parents still listen to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker etc., you know, music that was popular and modern in their time. They didn't stop liking the music, it just stopped being modern. If you mean it in the sense of people stop listening to whatever music they're listening to right now, that's quite a generalization and not something I agree with, since it's just not true in a lot of cases.

Yeah the first one, that's what I meant. People usually keep liking whatever music they like for their entire life. It just goes out of fashion and the mainstream music starts focusing on something different.
